A quick skim of this tells me it’s a bit more complicated than one or the other. nto.github.io/AirPlay

It would appear to me that if you’re doing a traditional casting of the video it’ll not use your VPN. As it just passes through the information needed for the device to fetch the video. Unless everything is configured to use the VPN*

cheese_greater,

Whats the cheapest and most facile way to get AppleTV to run through VPN? Can I get something in-between router and device that enforces everything thru it?

So sick of Appls bullshit, fuck

Toes,

The cheapest option would be to see if your VPN provider has an app or workaround for the appletv to do this.

The more effective option would be to see if your router has a feature to use the VPN and if not use a router that does.

ArbiterXero,

Many “bettter” routers can do this, pfsense can do it.

The problem is that Apple TV may get removed from your local network, meaning you can’t air-play to it at all lol.

Unless your whole network is on the vpn.

Why would you need a VPN inside your local network?

cheese_greater,

Cuz if I wanna stream shit, I don’t want them to have my IP in case they ban it or they are selling that info

thefactremains,

The site streams to the IP of the router then to the Mac and the Mac sends it over the Wi-Fi to the local IP address of the TV.

joyjoy,

If you do it through the app, like YouTube, it may have special code to connect directly to the TV and tell it to run in the app.
