Lemmy, is there a treasured piece of content that you stop yourself from going back to "too often" so as to not dilute it?

I do this for a few things, movies in particular. For me most recently, I’m planning on watching Bo Burnham’s Inside this weekend, for the first time since I watched it shortly post-release. I wasn’t really intending to wait checks watch nearly 3 years on that one, but I definitely felt it needed some space before a rewatch.

Anyone else treat certain pieces of media similarly?

WEAPONX,

Final Fantasy VIII. I want to play it all the time and i wish i could erase the plot from my memory and play it again for the first time.

whoa

can you explain the plot of viii for me

RvTV95XBeo,

Moody teen saves the world with his oversized sword-gun.

Full disclosure, this one is big on the nostalgia for me as well.

I remember the annoying protagonist, the stupid magic draw system, the crippling final dungeon. I don’t remember the plot.

WEAPONX,

I’m not saying it’s a masterpiece. It carries nostalgic and sentimental value for me. I like it.

spacemanspiffy,

Easily one of my favorites too. It was my first FF so I don’t see a lot of the flaws others claim to.

The Orville, Fresh Prince, and Firefly.

Been watching these three shows for many years; still haven’t seen every episode of any of them. One episode every few months/years is enough for me.

I fear for the day that I finally finish one of them.

Rolder,

Few dirty doujins that always get me going, but I try not to use them too often lest they lose their charm

roeeeeeeeee,

examples?

Rolder,

Personal fave is 65915

Thorny_Insight,

Not that I’m stopping myself from going back to it too often but for being such a popular song, Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz somehow has managed to not lose it’s magic on me. I never search for it but every organic encounter in the wild stops me on my tracks and sends chills down my spine. A true masterpiece.

Also shoutout to the Marcus Layton & Nonô cover.

Ejh3k,

Hey, OP. Check out the podcast Dissect. They did a season breaking down each track of “Inside”. It was really interesting and really gave me a deeper appreciation for the entire project.

ech,

Oh neat. I’ll look into that. Thanks!

Today,

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Love it, but i can’t watch it too often because it’s so exhausting.

elvis_depresley,

Cowboy Bebop (the anime series, not the live action), sadly only one season exists.

corruptmagician,

Halo reach, I’ll never get the feeling of my first run through back, but I forget smaller details when I wait a few years between playthroughs.

Surviving long enough in the unwinnable battle at the end that the game just straight up ripped control away was an accomplishment/heartbreak.

AtmaJnana,

I have read my favorite series only three times. I cracked the seal (figuratively) during a low point caused by the pandemic, among other things.

So glad I saved it. Now I probably wont wait another 20 years to read it again, but I’m glad I kept it fresh for myself.

For me it’s Aliens. I hadn’t watched it in probably 15 years and did recently when the 4k version came out.

It was so, so worth waiting for. Watched it with my 3 oldest kids and it was their first time. Amazing time was had by all.

Edit: Oh and this song by Sylvan Esso. I listen to it about once every three months and get goosebumps every time.

datavoid,

I do this with music… if one of my favourite nostalgia songs comes on and I’m not driving with the windows down in summer, it’s for sure getting skipped!

victorz,

That’s some good discipline – good for you!

Alivrah,

Some books and mangas, but mostly the Ghibli movies. Specially because when I watch one of them, I immediately want to go on a full Ghibli marathon.

They’re beautiful.

They’re beautiful.

In which aspects are you finding them beautiful?

Don’t get me wrong I am not a hater whatsoever, but I started watching them with my girlfriend recently and I’m not feeling it completely, I only watched Spirited Away before and I have the same feeling.

We have watched so far (in this order):

  1. The Boy and The Heron
  2. Princess Mononoke (this one was my favorite)
  3. How’s Castle
  4. My Neighbor Totoro

The art design is top notch I can agree with that.

My Neighbor Totoro

I do this with any new song I discover. When I first listened to Radiohead I consumed their albums like opioids, now I’m being more careful with The Smile, I listen to Bending Hectic once a week max.

Asudox,

Watched animes that I really liked. I plan to rewatch them every 3-5 years.
