Do you think the original dev is regretting his apps were open source?

shortwavesurfer,

Definitely possible. He sold his apps to a company, and everybody abandoned his apps like the sinking Titanic.

technom,

I thought it was a one-time payment.

shortwavesurfer,

Nope, he sold his apps to some advertising and tracking company and people fled.

technom,

I mean, if it’s a one time payment then he has no reasons to regret the decision even if the users dropped off. On the other hand, if he was expecting a recurring royalty from the buyer, then he didn’t think it through.

PS: I’m not justifying his actions in any manner. If a sale without a heads up is deceptive, his last reply was outright indignation. I’m just trying to understand whether he actually regretted it or not.

shortwavesurfer,

Oh, I see what you mean. I’m not sure.

EddoWagt, in more fossify apps released

Are these a fork from the simple apps?

shortwavesurfer,

Yes

shortwavesurfer, in How can I run apps without Play Store

Microg may work. I am a little surprised it doesnt work if you havent disabled play services. I generally avoid mainstream apps and use mostly apps from f-droid to not run into issues. Lord only knows what data the ChatGPT and other apps like it are collecting without you knowing.

private_eye,

Even I use f-droid and use mainstream ones in browser if possible. Along with ChatGPT I saw two other apps that showed same message but dont remember them.

Now the real question, how do microG works like all I have to install it as I dont know where to start the tutorials. Since i dont want to root my phone

@anon5621@lemmy.ml avatar

Their official is very annoying,they use google service for DRM purpose and also if u have root it will not work either.As alternative u can try chagpt wrapper f-droid.org/uk/…/org.woheller69.gptassist/

private_eye,

So you saying, this kind of apps wont work eventhough I am not touching Google Play Services. And yes, thanks for the suggestion

anon5621,
@anon5621@lemmy.ml avatar

Depends from application,some apps like whatsapp or viber will tell that they wanna google play service but u can skip this pop up and keep using application but some apps like official chatgpt app will not work at all.

Try Insular which lets you install Play Store inside an island that is essentially a bare android system. If the apps access anything on the operating system like contacts, etc. they just get empty data (unless you populate that islands Contacts with what you need for an application). You can make multiple islands if you need to isolate other applications from each other, or you can just install all untrusted apps inside of one island and let them feed off each other. I’ve also seen people poison the data those applications get with bullshit data in the things they are accessing inside the island and sending back.

I’ve used this very successfully with GrapheneOS, it’ll run my bank app for instance, so I don’t have to keep Play Services on my mainland profile. You can also move apps from mainland to island, or island to island inside the Insular manager.

private_eye,

A doubt arised, does both profile need to have same app version or signatures.

I want to use a single app in both profile, but one is modded version in work profile. Because a message appears when installing that sort of says, “another user has installed the same app but its different”.

ikidd,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

I think they’re complete separate, so I believe it would work. You can Clone apps in the Insular manager, so that makes me think it’s not an issue.

private_eye,

sadly no, they aren’t working.

private_eye,

Thanks, for the app. I had used Island for a while, but didn’t thought this way.

I’m playing for while but sorry I was not able to find multiple island feature which you were talking about; I wanted to ask here first before searching myself.

Also what does FLOSS mean?

ikidd,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

My bad, it must have been another one that I could make multiple profiles with, you are right, I don’t see that on my Insular install currently.

FLOSS is Free Libre Open Source Software. IMO, the only software you can rely on having any control over has to be opensource. Nothing else is worth investing time into, because it’ll eventually enshittify.

LoveSausage, (edited ) in How can I run apps without Play Store

Was a while since to tried to do it by removing. but removing stuff is not as good as starting without them. Easiest way is to flash a custom ROM. Then you can add play compatibility with MicroG or playservices isolated by apps or GOS ( if you have the right phone that’s it).

You don’t need root to run a custom ROM or run MicroG. You might need to root to flash everything depending on your phone , but no need to re enable it afterwards.

AgnosticMammal, in Organise Google Takeout Files

Ooh, thanks for the reminder. I gotta take a look through my takeout files.

jws_shadotak, (edited ) in Organise Google Takeout Files

github.com/anderbggo/GooglePhotosMatcher

I did this a couple months ago and it worked great. Just be sure to back things up.

fine_sandy_bottom,

This just embeds the meta data from the side cars right?

jws_shadotak,

It adds the metadata back to the photos instead of storing the json and photo separately

I just reread your post and I don’t think it sorts them into folders.

macattack, (edited ) in Organise Google Takeout Files

I’m transitioning to self-hosting via Immich and someone created an importer called immich-go that allows you to bulk upload your takeout files w/ the Google Photos feel (complete w/ previously created albums, tags, etc).

There’s an additional step if you exported via .tar files but it’s pretty straightforward ime.

fine_sandy_bottom,

If I understand you correctly this would only really be helpful if I was using immich, correct ?

mindlessLump, (edited ) in Organise Google Takeout Files

Check out exif tool. You could also incorporate jq a command line json parser, to extract data from the json file. If you are trying to do higher level sorting/organization, you may consider using a scripting language other than bash/zsh. Guaranteed there is a Python package for reading exif data.

askubuntu.com/a/404632

fine_sandy_bottom,

As I recall working with EXIF is generally a pain in the butt. In js the best you can hope for is a wrapper around some CLI based thing that I can’t remember the name of right now.

derfunkatron,
@derfunkatron@lemmy.world avatar

There’s the python image library (and a fork of it called pillow) and exif. There’s probably a bunch of others, too.

private_eye, in more fossify apps released

I have a doubt here, these apps from fossify are actually forks from the original open-source repo.

Now, say the original repo is closed. Would fossify face some restrictions. Because the base code is actually from the repo will be owned by closed person.

shortwavesurfer, (edited )

any code added to the repo from now on can be closed sourced but any code from before the purchase will always remain open source so the base code that the new apps are using will always remain open source and cannot be closed and any deviation will have to occur from now on.

Edit: the F-Droid team has also halted all new versions of the base apps since they no longer comply and they will eventually be out of date and removed.
