linker3000, in Community seems dead. Can we mirror reddit posts here?

Interesting comments all round. Let’s run with the discussion for a week to allow infrequent visitors a chance to comment and then see if there’s a strong trend towards a specific opinion.

trophosphere, in What project are you currently working on?

I am trying to optimize a general low-cost SMA end-launch connector’s footprint for OSHPark’s 4 layer board by attempting to get my return loss better than 20 dB for the entire frequency range up 8.5 GHz.

Rolive, in I need a new bench power supply

You could be really cheap about it and get some dc dc converter module, volt ammeter and an old laptop charger.

Rolive, in Is this a sign of a capacitor leak?

Not an expert here but the stain is limited to where the capacitor is located. I think it’s safe to assume the capacitor was faulty and to replace it.

electroskunk, in Ah, there you are!

So...when can we start posting "resistance is futile"-type jokes?

Well done 🥶

precedemazipan,

@ tunnel rush That is quite impressive.

nothacking, in Community seems dead. Can we mirror reddit posts here?

I greatly prefer the occasional original post with actuall engagement to a flood of reposts. If I want reddit posts, I will go on reddit (and also get comments and things like that). On a more meta level, the only way a community can gain and retain users is by offering unique content. If 99% of content is just content from Reddit (with missing comments), why should anyone bother to use Lemmy?

Subscribing to a comunity does not cost anything, very few people will leave a community because it is dead, but people will leave a community that spams their feed.

Sorry, your comment is just rehashing all the arguments that I had in many other discussions:

If I want reddit posts, I will go on reddit

The idea is to not give more traffic to reddit and to help people get out of it. By having the content mirrored here, not only we have a method to consume the content from there, we also ensure that the majority of people (a.k.a, the 90% of lurkers) can find on Lemmy the content they are used to consume from Reddit, thus facilitating the migration and fueling network effects.

with missing comments

My system also mirrors the comments, so you won’t be missing anything.

but people will leave a community that spams their feed.

I’m not talking about mirroring posts from communities that are super popular. The idea is to get the content from the long tail of niche communities. There won’t be a “flood” of spam because we are talking about communities that have a handful of posts and comments per day.

omgitsaheadcrab, in in your household, there is a chip you can easily decap. Can you guess what it is?

SIM?

ChaoticNeutralCzech,

AnswerThat’s not a 14-pin chip. The device is apparently thicker, and it continues to function now that I reassembled it.

XenoWarden, in What project are you currently working on?

3D printing and assembling a controller for clone hero!

jjagaimo, in Noob question regarding JDS2915 signal generator

Signal generators have an internal impedance of 50 ohms and expect a load of 50 ohms when the 50 ohm setting is selected. The 50 ohm impedance prevents reflections of high frequency (rf) signals as it changes mediums. Ideally you should not be using a signal generator to drive an output, but instead buffer it or use an amplifier. If you use high-z the output voltage is exactly what you set it to (e.g. 5Vpp) but with the 50 ohm setting the applies voltage is twice that with an internal resistance of 50 ohms.

roho,

thanks

clyne, in JTAG 'Hacking' the Original Xbox in 2023
@clyne@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Amazing read, thanks for sharing. It’s fascinating to see that it is now hobbyist-accessible to design and order a PCB that intercepts BGA connections, something that at the time was Microsoft’s sure-fire trick to disable JTAG.

nothacking, in Please do not pet wire-bonded chips

Why is the chip naked? Get a can or some epoxy.

Scafir,

We are working towards having a product properly packaged. This is a prototype that is not mature enough yet to justify the cost/time to package it. Moreover, this custom chip is used to measure ultra low currents (down to femto amps), so any packaging could potentially interfere with the measurement capabilities (-> no epoxy). It is however protected by a large shielding box, but it’s no use during assembly/modifications :/

glibg10b, in Inductively powered LED thing

Are you using the BJT to create an AC signal? If so, how?

nothacking, (edited )

Just a blocking occilstor based on a 2N3904. I later found that adding a capacitor across the coil connected to the transistors emiter and operating it at resonance, greatly improves the power consumption. (30mA to 1mA)

aperson, in Downsizing my homelab! Free bit and bobs, just pay for shipping!

I would remove that smart electronics picture. It has most of your name and address in it.

danielhep,

Thanks for the note. I meant to crop it and forgot to! Either way, since I’m about to move (hence the downsizing), so no big deal.

collegefurtrader, in Downsizing my homelab! Free bit and bobs, just pay for shipping!

I can sort this all into my collection quite efficiently, I’ll take the lot. ( unless someone has a specific need)

Tell me the size and weight of the box and I’ll send you a prepaid shipping label.

danielhep,

Cool! Let’s do it; I’m anxious to get it out. If someone comes along very soon with a specific need, we can split something out, but I’ll send you a DM.

collegefurtrader,

Thanks
