BR4, in Yes... pirated cars will definitely fix the problem

I think a major reason for these models is that the more that the car becomes a computing device, the more that it’ll require regular patches and optimizations. Being connected to the servers and using services that route through it lets them gather usage data, offer some extra features that can functiom from anywhere, and update security and functionality (which would possibly involve full time developers I suppose).

It does seem greedy (way overpriced), but this isn’t the same as disabling hardware that you need to sub to activate (a la seat warmers). Plus it’s all still pretty cutting edge tech atm and I usually tell people that means you’re choosing to fund its early development (and being a beta tester) over using more standard and tested products.

LarmyOfLone,

Outside of self driving cars there isn’t a reason cars should become a computing device though.

If you want to end a car centric infrastructure in favor of bikes or velomobiles you would still want self driving cars that you only use for special tasks. Robotaxies or robo busses. Then it makes sense to not own a car.

paaviloinen, in Dubai Metro Blue Line is part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which aims to create a '20-minute city’

Dubai is a car dependent hellhole that exploits guest workers slaves. They’ve only got metro because it’s cool to have some and some people aren’t allowed to drive and you sort of have to pretend that you’re giving fair options to people who don’t drive.

The goal is to make it “Dubai was a car dependent hellhole”. The Emirate of Dubai acknowledges the problems and have a plan to fix it and it is being executed right now. What sets UAE apart from many other states, is its ability to get things done.

You can learn about the plan here u.ae/en/…/dubai-2040-urban-master-plan

LemmyKnowsBest, (edited ) in “Can We Talk About Cars?” (2011)

anyone who’s terrified of driving should not drive. keep those people off the road. They are the ones who drive badly because they’re scared, And they make the roads dangerous for everybody else.

I’ve driven across the United States five times with no problem. You just have to follow all the traffic laws and keep a safe following distance and use your turn signals, stay 100% focused on the road at all times, easy peasy. people who can’t do those things should stay off the roads. It’s better for them and better for everyone else.

ReakDuck,

Mostly people who feel especially confident and secure tend to make crashes and mistakes.

They are arrogant narcissists and they should not have driver’s licenses either. It was terrifying for me to be in the passenger seat of my ex-boyfriend. He was the definition of this kind of driver and he was always intoxicated too. I learned a lot about the mindset of shitty drivers on the road when I was in his passenger seat. Surprised I survived and surprised he is still alive.

Dirk, in Europe’s politicians are dEsPeRaTe to tackle e-scooters, why aren’t they bothered by monster SUVs?
@Dirk@lemmy.ml avatar

Because the politicians are deep up in the automobile lobby’s ass.

I find it interesting that despite all the ways we can dunk on yanks, yanks do seem to be genuinely interested in walkable cities. All the walkable cities are so expensive because they are high-demand areas. CHUDs may like to dunk on San Francisco or New York, but they’re expensive because they’re desirable.

For all the whining about “freedom”, CHUDs sure do love forcing Americans to live in a way that they don’t want to live.

I was just thinking about this today downstairs in the food court at the bottom of the office building I work in. Hundreds of people come through there for the lunch rush to dozens of fast food restaurants (sushi, buritoes, Thai etc), all in the space of less than 30x30m including seating. I was thinking: there’s no way you could do this with a drive through.

I don’t get it either. The chicken sandwich is OK at best. A solid 7/10 just for consistency. Everything else is meh. People seem to like their fry sauce, which is probably required to eat their flat tasting waffles fries.

Americans like sauces and dressings on things. Ranch on everything, unless it comes with their own sauce.

I’m curious if they are this popular, or just slow as hell and just make the lines longer to hold more people so they can’t leave to get better food

I think a lot of the comments here mischaracterize chik fil a as another shitty burger joint in a way that would be confusing to people that never seen one. They make really good chicken sandwiches because chicken sandwiches is almost the only thing they make. While most fast food joints might have 1-3 people running it during non-peak hours, chic fil a constantly has a small army in there. I don’t even know how so many people stay busy but that crazy looking line pictured will be cleared out in under 10 minutes.

Been to Chik-Fil-A before, they arent even that great, or at least not especially compelling compared to kfc or popeyes. maybe im missing something though idk.
