magnetosphere, in Smoke roach caught smuggling, Texas, USA, 1938
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

If someone is willing to put this much effort into getting a cigarette, just let ‘em have the fucking cigarette. They’ve earned it, and they’re only hurting themselves anyway.

QuantumSparkles, in Verna Eriksson, smuggler for the Whites in the Finnish Civil War, poses with some contraband weaponry, 1918

I’m not convinced this isn’t Pete Davidson

PositiveNoise, in Verna Eriksson, smuggler for the Whites in the Finnish Civil War, poses with some contraband weaponry, 1918
@PositiveNoise@kbin.social avatar

Akasazh, in Timber train bridge over Crooked River Gorge, Oregon, USA, late 19th century?
@Akasazh@feddit.nl avatar

That’s a nice bit of carpentry right there.

Etterra, in Giraffe Panther tank-destroyer prototype, Germany, 1970s?

So they put a cherry picker arm on a tank to… What, have a guy with an RPG hang out in so he can get sniped at?

PugJesus, (edited )
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

The idea was, plop a missile launcher up there and you could get some truly ludicrous range out of it and even fire from cover. Basic idea was sound, but it came with so many problems (speed, mechanical failure, the launcher being an obvious target) that they eventually gave up on it entirely.

Until russia decided to do it again now

Reading that is actually what inspired me to search this old beast up again!

DmMacniel, in Pipe for two, 1949

When destroying your lungs becomes competitional.

Potatisen, in People sitting on the front of a logging train as it crosses a bridge, Oregon, USA, late 19th century

Wouldn’t it be super hot to sit there?

SatanicNotMessianic, in Man making a call with his carphone, New York, 1959

The car phone is cool, but what’s that little trike thing parked across the street?

nucleative, (edited )

Looks like it’s meant to carry goods or debris or trash or something. They are very common still in many parts of the world.

smashboy, in A man carrying many baskets on his head, Covent Garden, London, 1926-1927.

My dudes, what is going on with all the baskets today?

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

troyunrau, in One more basket carrier for the road! 20 baskets on his head, count 'em! London, 1925
@troyunrau@lemmy.ca avatar

Are they empty?

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Not sure about this particular pic, but I know that porters at this time would carry multiple filled baskets like this, and that human beings can carry and balance a surprising amount of weight on their heads.

bigbluealien, in Barricade during the Battle of Cable Street (a clash between British police enabling a fascist march and anti-fascist activists), 1936
@bigbluealien@kbin.social avatar

Now we have a home secretary enabling fascists while the police man the barricades, which I guess is progress

andthenthreemore,

She needs to be arrested for incitement of violence.

Alchemy, in Nazi shithead rally in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1938
@Alchemy@lemmy.world avatar

Why is there fencing around the areas, like fenced in middle section?

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Possibly to avoid anti-fascist demonstrators rushing the stage, as I know happened in several non-German Nazi rallies around the world.

jerome, in Newfangled washing machine with family, Ohio, USA, 1911
@jerome@kbin.social avatar

Guys, I don't want a time machine anymore.

some_guy, in 'Motormat' drive-in restaurant, Los Angeles, 1949

We’ve been lazy pieces of shit longer than I’d realized.

ChaoticNeutralCzech, (edited ) in 'Motormat' drive-in restaurant, Los Angeles, 1949

NO TIPPING

Cool but I wonder how they enforce that

PugJesus,
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Any extra money that goes in with the bill is treated as asking for change, one presumes.

ChaoticNeutralCzech, (edited )

Sure but the customer can leave money with dirty dishes, drive off and never be seen again.

I think it’s more of a suggestion: “We pay our employees to provide good service. If your experience was excellent, feel free to tip but don’t consider it mandatory.”

hglman,

The point is you don’t have to tip a server not that they disallow tips. It’s advertising it’s cheaper.
