Crocheting is so much fun! Super cheap to get started with budget yarn and a cheap crocheting hook, and with all of the free tutorials on YouTube the sky is the limit.

ickplant,
@ickplant@lemmy.world avatar

What they’re not telling is, before long you will be spending your whole paycheck on yarn. Soft, scrumptious, luxurious yarn. You think this won’t happen to you, but it will. Just you see.

Grayox,
@Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah about that… I wilded out at Joanne’s buying a shit ton of yarn they had on sale for Black Friday. Super excited to do a Temperature Blanket in 2024 though.

ickplant,
@ickplant@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, how much I relate to this comment. I am also super excited for you to make a temperature blanket! Please show it off when it’s finished - what crochet community are you a part of?

Grayox, (edited )
@Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

So stoked to get started on it, currently in the planning stage, haven’t decided what stitch, yarn, or weight I want to use yet, but I’m pretty sure im going to use the daily High Temp. Not currently a part of any communities would love it if Lemmy had a crochet instance, but i dont have the mental capacity to create and moderate it, currently just watching YouTube tutorials to learn. I’ve only completed 2 shawls and a head band so far, but i just started a sweater vest with Caron Jumbo’s peacock yarn using V stitches. First time winging it on a piece, so excited!!!

ickplant,
@ickplant@lemmy.world avatar

Have you checked out crochet!crochet? They seem pretty active. And if you ever get into knitting, there is !knitting. I’m so excited for you, I know that feeling when you are thinking of a big project, and it’s starting to become reality!

Grayox,
@Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

Thanks for the recommendations, just gave em both a sub!!!

ickplant,
@ickplant@lemmy.world avatar

Noice! I’m subbed to both, and I will be on the lookout for your blanket in a year!

Nougat,

One of my kids started crocheting like ... six weeks ago? She's been making little animals, keychains, hats, and is selling them at craft shows to fund a school choir trip in the spring. I'm absolutely amazed.

@snaptastic Please let me know if this comment meets your relevancy standards.

Grayox,
@Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

Since @snaptastic isn’t responding, Ill say it. This comment is relevant af.

Nougat,

I think you meant @snaptastic, and thank you.

Waraugh,

I would like to get into it but I’m really nervous I’ll blow money on another hobby that doesn’t go anywhere or I’ll suck too bad to make anything. It just seems like magic that someone can fiddle with a needle and make shapes on purpose.

Grayox,
@Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

Watch a few YouTube tutorials of easy crochet projects and just buy the bare essentials for that project. You can get what you need to make your own beanie for around $15. Its super easy to undo your work and start over from the point where you messed up. Personally its really good for my anxiety. I started it a few weeks ago and have already made 2 shaws, one for me and one for my partner and a head band. Currently working on a sweatervest and a beanie. Its seriously so good for my mental health cant recommend it enough.

Waraugh,

Thank you, it sounds like the perfect hobby for what I’m looking for and I appreciate your advice and reassurance.

Grayox,
@Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

You are ever so Welcome!! It is literally the only thing that gets me out of bed on bad mental health days.

Yamainwitch,

I would put it out there to your friends/family that you’re interested in trying it out, I’ve found my knitting/crocheting friends have their older and entry level supplies they will happy to lend or give away.

ickplant,
@ickplant@lemmy.world avatar

Starting is super cheap - it really only starts to get expensive once you get into really nice yarns and make a lot of pieces, which you absolutely don’t have to do. It’s a lot of fun!

@kras@lemmy.world avatar

Holding and keeping tension is the hardest part so don’t let that put you off if you start. This guy made a very helpful starting out guide and it’s completely free. crocheting101.com

If I were this bird, I'd be keeping a low profile, today of all days.

The best way to keep a low profile is to duck.

Thanks! For some reason the link was broken for me, so here it is again just in case: mprnews.org/…/theyre-here-see-final-6-design-cand…

Guyonthecouc,

Thanks! It sure is broken though, weird

ickplant,
@ickplant@lemmy.world avatar

I know, it looks like the exact same link. So weird.

Guyonthecouc,

I think I fixed it. I used the url button in Voyager the first time. This time I just pasted the link. Thanks for looking out

ickplant,
@ickplant@lemmy.world avatar

You got it! I use Voyager too, great app.

The Vexillology community is having an aneurysm right now

This is great.

Yes all three comments I can find on the only post about Minnesota seem to be mentioning it. I also never lie.

Bruh, it’s a joke

gotta be in it to win it

They got some real gems in that list: 41, 59, 70, 92, 138 are all absolute winners. https://serc.mnhs.org/flags

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA,
@HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world avatar

How can you leave out 76, 183, 223, or 253?

agamemnonymous, (edited )
@agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works avatar

91, 118,119, 134/182(332),163, 291, 313, 340, 416, 445. That’s just on the first 5 pages. For bonus, consider every submission which isn’t itself just the flag design (e.g. 4, 6, 32, 96, etc) as, itself, the flag design.

Hamartiogonic,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

I’m pretty sure some people were clearly aiming for the FF tier.

Too much detail ✅ Write stuff on it ✅ Use the word Minnesota ✅ Also add the year ✅

PlasmaDistortion, in Wholesome submission

It’s a million times better than the current racist flag.

chuckleslord,

That’s why they’re replacing it

agamemnonymous,
@agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works avatar

It’s not nearly as racist as it is just really badly designed, vexillologically speaking.
