If you really want word, you could try Microsoft 365, where its in your browser instead of a thing you download.

hottari, in Security advise collection - what do you recommend?

Not a single mention of secure boot? Weird.

I would say you are already secure enough if you are using software from official/trusted repositories and updating them on a regular basis.

That said, if you want extra security. Drop all software that cannot run on Wayland and go even further by isolating all desktop applications with the Flatpak sandbox. This is made extremely easy with Flatseal. Maximum points if you setup secure boot.

Based on this, you’re basically looking for the ‘game console experience on your couch’. If that’s the case, honestly you shouldn’t look beyond^[1]^ Bazzite.

If, instead, you actually wanted to play retro games primarily, then please let us know.

  1. While ChimeraOS and HoloISO also offer the ‘game console experience’, they don’t support Nvidia GPUs. So you would be on your own at best; which would be a horrible experience for a new user. If you feel particularly adventurous, then Jovian-NixOS is actually another option. But arguably less newbie-friendly compared to Bazzite.

Thanks so much for the tips!

I’d definitely like to get some of the classic multiplayer games running on emulators as well.

I’d definitely like to get some of the classic multiplayer games running on emulators as well.

Bazzite does allow easy install of EmuDeck and RetroDECK during first installation, which should cover most of your emulation needs. For completeness’ sake; Batocera does exist. However, I’m not sure if it runs e.g. Steam games as good as Bazzite runs retro games.

KillSwitch10,

Came to say this.

Have you tried the different interfaces that libreoffice has? Try switching to their ribbon-like ui and see if it matches what you are looking for.

What exactly are you missing?

undrwater, in Micro***t Word on Linux and alternatives

Your question is likely too general for a good answer.

What do you need specifically? What makes the solutions you’ve tried ‘meh’? What would make an office suite ‘better’?

There used to be a wine-based project specifically for Microsoft office. It was called crossover office. Not sure if it’s still maintained.

Good luck!

Meanwhile, Linux Mint users have it on by default.

Jumuta,

mint and arch aren’t made for the same people. Not everyone wants it on by default

lemmyvore, (edited )

Out of curiosity, what’s the point of installing Bluetooth but keeping it disabled?

I imagine the opposite would be the default most people wanted (enable it by default and let power users with a bizarre use case disable it manually).

sederx,

Because it’s a security risk but you might need it sometimes.

Jumuta,

because arch is a minimal distro and some people see the processing power used for bt to be wasted

HoloISO is SteamOS for non Steam Decks. That would be great option for something that “just works” and is designed for use from the couch with a controller. I haven’t tried this but I’m sure there’s a way to install Kodi for media too.

helenslunch,

Don’t know why I see so many people recommending HoloISO. It hasn’t been updated in 3 months, and all they did was merge a bunch of code from Chimera.

ChimeraOS and Bazzite are what you’re looking for.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Thanks for educating me, what’s the difference between the three?

helenslunch, (edited )
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I don’t really know, other than the other 2 are updated on a nearly daily basis and Chimera is Arch-based (like SteamOS) with Gnome UI while Bazzite is Fedora-based.

Lol seriously what is this. You need to start your own services in arch everybody who used it knows that

WPS Office and FreeOffice. Each with their own caveats, but one just might work for you.

Helix, in Micro***t Word on Linux and alternatives

Use the online version of Word if you want Word. If you want the desktop version use an older one, the Office 365 ones don’t really work on Linux.

    Why is LibreOffice ‘meh’?

PainInTheAES, in A symptom of linux past traumas

Yeah this isn’t really much of an issue with EFI now. You can change boot order in the BIOS and things are way less likely to get overwritten or broken. You can even have 2 EFI partitions if it’s something your concerned about.

    kuadhual,

The only time I got my grub overwritten was when I have to update bios/firmware from Windows. After bios/firmware update, the update app always restore windows boot manager and I need to reinstall grub from live environment.

yum13241, in Arch on semi-critical pc? (Also EndeavourOS vs raw Arch?)

I’d say yes, but don’t change your GRUB theme right before a presentation.

Maybe openSUSE would be a better pick.
