Professor_Piddles, in Linux on a 2in1 for Uni

I have a Lenovo Yoga 6 13" that I’ve had a pretty good experience with. Screen rotation didn’t work properly on Ubuntu 20.04 when I tried it back then, but I switched to Fedora 36 KDE, which worked great for over a year. I’m now on Debian 12 + KDE with an equally good experience. Fingerprint reader is not supported, but I didn’t want to use it anyway.

tubbadu, in Linux on a 2in1 for Uni

I have a shitty hp 2in1 that really sucks, but for taking notes and annotate pdfs is good enough. In case you’ll choose KDE as desktop environment check out this kwin script I wrote to get a tablet-like experience

Defaultplace,

Thanks, will check it out

KISSmyOS, (edited ) in Linux on a 2in1 for Uni

I have experience with a Fujitsu Lifebook U9310x.
My general advice would be, if you’re going to use Linux on a convertible, install Fedora. It has the best and newest implementation of Gnome, and Gnome has the best support for convertible, touchscreen and on-screen keyboard support.
On Fedora, the experience was almost as good as on Windows, whereas I had issues with Debian not correctly switching modes when I fold the keyboard back, not popping up the onscreen keyboard and not correctly rotating the screen.

Disclaimer: I haven’t tested Ubuntu because I personally dislike it. But if it’s certified for your hardware, that would be the first thing I’d try.

Hardware advice: Don’t get a Fujitsu Lifebook U for writing. The keyboard sucks badly, to the point where about every 50th keystroke simply doesn’t register. There’s a Lifebook E convertible now which is more budget-friendly and has a better keyboard, but it’s too thick and heavy for use as a tablet.
Thinkpads consistently have the best Linux support, so that’s what I’d have bought if I hadn’t got a 60% discount on the Fujitsu from work.

Defaultplace,

Thanks, I think I will try a bunch of distros once I have the hardware.

Churbleyimyam, in GIMP 2.10.36 Released

Some harsh comments about GIMP here. I think it’s fantastic. Totally bailed out my workplace when the Adobe Extortion Suite decided break on our machines. I use it at home too and I’m grateful for it.

njordomir,

I remember running lxde and xfce on my eee at various points. If lxqt still supports 32 bit machines, I bet it would still work okay.

I’ve seen better designs. But I’ve also seen worse designs. This is pretty meh.

And I was gonna try out KDE anyway.

KISSmyOS,

KDE is the epitome of meh.

jernej,

Isn’t KDE spearheding HDR support for Wayland? And doing a bunch more objectively good/usefull projects like the xwayland video bridge?

KISSmyOS, (edited )

Technologically, it’s the best DE out there, no contest. (Maybe with the exception of touchscreen integration)
But some design decisions grind my gears so hard I can’t use it.
I get irrationally angry when I see the bouncing cursor animation, or look at a list of my programs and half the names start with “K”.
It feels too sluggish, overloaded and Windows-y in its default configuration and getting rid of everything that nags me takes too long, when Gnome comes out of the box looking simple and stylish.

This is a great release, GNOME 45 is looking really nice.

This is a great release

As KDE F38 user, this is a super boring release. Nothing noteworthy for us to look forward to except LibreOffice 7.6 - which you can get via Flatpak anyways. I was hoping the new DNF 5 would make the cut, but guess it’s still not ready yet. :(

Guess will have to hold out my excitement until F40 for Plasma 6 and DNF 5 (hopefully).

Sentau, (edited )

I thought dnf 5 wont come with fedora 40 because that coincides with the next RHEL release so they want both of them to ship the stable and tested dnf version.

edit - FedoraProject confirming that F41 is the target for dnf5

Xournal++ is for drawing over pdfs like MS OneNote

d3Xt3r, in Help troubleshooting issues with Sony WH1000MX5 playback

No such issues here with my XM5, been using mine for over an year. Are your devices on at least Bluetooth v5.2? All of mine are either 5.2 or 5.3 and I’ve not experienced any issues. I use my headphones with Android, Linux, Windows 10 and macOS. Even multipoint works fine.

As for the head comfort, you could get a headband cover/cushion, such as the ones made by Geekria.

chrismit3s,

+1, no problems at all so far, been using them almost daily for a year now on both linux and android.

Somehow things seem similar (perhaps better) in Greece:

Statcounter reports 99% of Penguinland(Antarctica) uses OS X, which is obvious bullshit

    cyberwolfie,

Rechecked this now, and it’s at about 5% now. The statistics seem a bit weird to me, unless there are some big seasonal changes. Your 12% was recorded in June and July. Maybe with less business activity during these months, the Windows share plummets in favor of home users who are more prone to use Linux.

Oh my bad, I misunderstood the concept of percentage.

    TheAnonymouseJoker,
    @TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

Percentage is not as easy or helpful to work with, when there are orders of magnitude difference between absolute numbers. It hides the absolute number difference for no other reason than unspoken lying of statistics.

    KarnaSubarna,
    @KarnaSubarna@lemmy.ml avatar

To put it in right context (relying on Wiki data for year 2021):

Current population of Greece: 10,482,487 (~10.5 Million)

Current population of India: 1,210,854,977 (~1.2 Billion)

    christos,
