Irkiosan, in How safe are my data if my hard drive isn't encrypted?

If the risk of physical data theft is high, your data is at risk. If the risk of physical access to you machine is rather low, encryption might actually increases the risk of losing your data simply by the chance of losing the means to access your data (forgotten passphrase, lost hardware key…).

Mio,

It might also be harder to recover picies if the hard drive fail partially. However, many use SSD now, might be a different story there.

+1 Plasma. However, I don’t dislike gnome. Gnome just doesn’t fit my personal taste of workflow and customizability. Other that that, gnome did a pretty good job on the look and feel department. I feel at home on Plasma (and almost at home on xfce)

RoverRacecar, in This week in KDE: changing the wallpaper from within System Settings

Yes, that escape on spectacle is literally my workflow; I take a lot of screenshots and that change was the only thing I did not like about this newest Ubuntu update.

Interesting to see 3/5 “Very high priority Plasma bugs” bugs are X11

GravitySpoiled,

Why are they high priority then? 😅

Believe it or not, some people still use x11 (i dont, but many do for many reasons)

warmaster,

Could it be related to XWayland?

0xtero, in why doesn't GNOME have a mascot??

The Gnome devs say you don't need a mascot.

cujo, in Anyone have experience with Intel Arc GPUs?
@cujo@sh.itjust.works avatar

UPDATE: I picked up the ARC A750. Been driving it around for awhile. Older DirectX games perform on par or often even better on Linux with ARC than they do on Windows. DX12 games had negligible performance boosts being run on Windows vs. Linux with ARC save some big exceptions…

Certain DX12 titles, one of which I own (Halo Infinite) WILL NOT RUN under Linux WITH the ARC card due to a lack of features in Vulkan. There are still some DX12 calls that have no equivalents in Vulkan, and while some games flag this feature set without using it and MAY be able to be tricked into running without it, any games that actually USE those features will not run under Linux with the ARC card, period. So… Research your newer AAA DX12 titles first.

I love both. I can’t decide on which to make my full daily. GNOME sleek. KDE is nostalgic and customizable. I have Fedora with GNOME and OpenSuse with KDE. OpenSuse has issues with some SD cards and some phone’s flash memory. GNOME can’t have desktop shortcuts, which I find annoying. I may just go back to Debian with KDE and GNOME and switch back and forth. I think that still possible. I haven’t tried that in a while.

GFGJewbacca,

Sleek is a great way to describe GNOME. It’s really pretty and slick, and I was sure happy with how it worked. Plus, with all my google accounts hooked into GNOME, Evolution just pulled all that info and gave me real easy access to my mail. I wish KMail did the same thing.

I never tied my accounts to anything, but that sounds awesome!

Holzkohlen,

IMHO no desktop icons is the one major thing that stuck with me. I use KDE Plasma now, but the desktop folder might as well not exist.

I see the merit in it, but I see the desktop as a shortcut area for most used apps. Like the dock, but I can’t stand docks. I normally have 2-3 icons on the desktop. Terminal is by keyboard shortcut.

I like 90% about KDE, GNOME and XFCE.

Depending in my changing needs and preferences I switch between them.

If I ever find the perfect DE (or maybe WM), I’ll let everyone know.

Apple doesn’t have a mascot, so gnome doesn’t have one either.

the little apple with the bite??

cujo,
@cujo@sh.itjust.works avatar

That’s a logo, not a mascot. A logo is a mark that denotes a brand, the apple with the bite taken out for Apple, the footprint for GNOME, the stylized and colorized G for Google…

A mascot is a character that acts as a face and a voice for a brand. The gecko for Geico, Tony the Tiger for Frosted Flakes, Flo for Progressive.

Many brands looking to keep a serious, “sophisticated” brand aesthetic eschew mascots in favor of simple logos. GNOME follows suit with that trend. Nothing wrong with it, in fact I think it works quite well for them. If they were to adopt a mascot now it would be… Strange.

ScottE, in What's your experience with bluetooth audio?
@ScottE@sh.itjust.works avatar

Gentoo and Pipewire kinda just works.

I expected a battle, like on my work Ubuntu laptop with pulse audio, but holy cow… Pipewire ftw.

featherfurl, in why doesn't GNOME have a mascot??

I feel like every larger open source project that doesn’t have a Tyson Tan designed mascot doesn’t have one because they refused to let him make one for them.

I agree that this is a sad thing, but I guess not everyone in the Linux world is into furry waifus.

01adrianrdgz,
@01adrianrdgz@lemmy.world avatar

wait really?? So Tyson Tan designs a lot of mascots?? I think his characters are very cute!!! I will not allow him to make my mascot, not because I dislike his art, but because I like to make everything.
