no_priority, in zsh or fish for an intermediate Linux user?

I use fish because I have better things to do than tweak my shell configuration and debug shell plugins.

When I tried oh-my-zsh and prezto (I think?) they came with tons of plugins that performed badly and made it hard to get things done (specifically, they ran git status synchronously on every new prompt, which does not work well in a moderately large repo). Fish had similar features but wasn’t horribly slow, so I use it.

techwizrd,

Same. I’ve written a fish plugin, but other than that I just fish pretty much stock. It works and just gets out of my way.

s20, in Systemd-Free Immutable Distro Nitrux 2.9.1 Is Out Powered by Linux Kernel 6.4

I went to DL it and try it out, and… dude, I hate Sourceforge. I know how privileged this sounds, but I’m not spending a half hour DLing something that I can DL in a minute and a half somewhere else.

Anybody got a line on a torrent?

s20, in Rhino Linux 2023.1, how we made the distro

So… is it Snap infected err… Snap based, like Ubuntu? Because otherwise it looks kinda neat.

@pnutzh4x0r@lemmy.ndlug.org avatar

It does not use snaps, according to First Look at Rhino Linux, a Rolling-Release Distro Based on Ubuntu and Xfce:

Ubuntu fans who don’t like Snaps would also love to hear that Rhino Linux doesn’t include Snap apps, nor Flatpak apps.

Stillhart, in Steam On Linux Usage Spikes To Nearly 2% In July, Larger Marketshare Than Apple macOS

Count me as one of those new Linux users. I’ve been trying to switch since the 90’s and Linux gaming is finally viable. I know this is in large part thanks to Valve, so thanks, Valve!

zer0,

If the games you are playing don’t run on linux than you are mostly playing crap designed by people who’s main goal is to empty your pockets and who think that you are stupid

Thank god for Valve and how awesome they’ve been to Linux users

crow,

They’ve done such amazing work for Linux. Linux gaming wouldn’t be the same without them.

zer0,

So awesome they run a monopoly on videogames through their useless closed source spyware.

Well, their position is what allowed them to do so much for Linux. And their desire to distance themselves from Microsoft, which I’m absolutely on board with.

gerdesj, in I feel called out

My wife uses Arch (actually). She calls it the internet, when she really means Facebook. She knows it isn’t Apple but it gets a bit vague after that!

The last time I had to fire up the Mesh Central client to sort something out on her desktop from work was around three months ago. Every couple of weeks I ssh into it, update it and schedule a reboot for 03:00.

ciko22i3,
@ciko22i3@sopuli.xyz avatar

why arch and not something with more stable updates like debian?

Titou,
@Titou@feddit.de avatar

because Arch is more lightwheight than Debian, and also more stable than non-arch users think it is

Debian is sometimes frustratingly out of date for daily apps like the web browser. I’d rather recommend something with a bit more updates like Mint.

Complaining about what works for other people? It is tradition. It’s innate Linux user behavior.

Alma should use this as advantage for them. Now market it as “Alma Linux is more secure than RHEL”.

lol he’s already a true linux user.

But probably best to have a talk about gatekeeping linux though. There’s no wrong way to run linux.

JackbyDev, in Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

Using it since I was 12

People have been using X since that age so anything different is going to be jarring. Just the smallest roadblocks can put people off of stuff. Why bother learning something new when the old thing works?

palordrolap, in Linux for Microsoft Surface devices. It is reality!

Microsoft wants to give Linux a nice warm hug and then squeeze and squeeze and all the warmth disappears this is actually quite a high pressure oh that hurts Microsoft no ow are those needles coming out of your arms I think I hear bones splintering and screaming oh no it's me I'm screaming I'm hearing myself screaming I'm turning into

HughJanus, in Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

This is always a hilarious conversation because the diehard Linux users will lie up and down about how Linux has no problems and it’s just you that’s too dumb to understand how to use it.

NathanUp,
@NathanUp@lemmy.ml avatar

Initial setup can be hard, and then, because GNU/Linux lets you do whatever you want, It’s not hard to bork the system if you’re using commands you don’t understand. The biggest realization for me was that if I want a stable system, I can’t expect to experiment with it / customize it to the nth degree unless I have a robust rollback / recovery solution like timeshift in place. Feeling very empowered after leaving windows, I have destroyed many systems, but truly, if you set up your system and then leave it alone, these days it’s not difficult to have a good experience.

But yea, you’re totally right: the userbase can be toxic AF, and there’s no one place you can go to learn the basics you really ought to know.
