If this post gets 666 upvotes hell will definitely break loose lol

Stillhart, in Is linux good for someone tech illererate.

If you’re not doing anything crazy, there’s no reason linux should be any harder to use than Windows.

Once you’re up and running, daily life will be pretty straightforward.

Plenty of great advice in the other posts that I won’t rehash. One thing I didn’t see mentioned is using a live boot to try out linux. You can basically run it off a USB stick before you install it to get a feel for what it’s like. Most “beginner friendly” distros will have tutorials on how to create the live disk. Example for Pop!_OS: support.system76.com/articles/live-disk/

Nibodhika, in Video editor for Linux?

The only one I know of is kdenlive, not sure of it can do all of that but it has always been enough for everything I needed for video editing.

const_void, in Just about every Windows and Linux device vulnerable to new LogoFAIL firmware attack

We need more machines that support coreboot. These proprietary firmware vendors have been getting rich off making our machines worse for too long.

i use coreboot but i’d prefer libreboot if a gaming level system with linux supported it. Are their any? I ask to the masses, not you specifically lol

fhek, in What is the state of Multiseat in Linux today?

Huh. TIL what multiseat is. Never knew that existed.

voidMainVoid, in Integrity and config errors Ubuntu

As a rule of thumb, if my computer is working without any problems, I’ll just ignore warnings and errors that show up during boot or shutdown.

Strit, in What is the state of Multiseat in Linux today?
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

While Linux TTY is multiseat by default, each TTY is a seperate user login, I’m not sure any of the GUI’s support this function.

cmnybo,

You can run multiple X servers for a graphical multiseat setup. It’s a lot of work to set it up and most of the information about it is out of date though.

nossaquesapao, in One of these 6 will become Plasma 6. Wallpaper Which one do you prefer?

The one with the tree is so cute and makes me feel at peace.

Middle left. Don’t know the numbering scheme, 3?

slipperydippery,

Yes, 1,2 and 5 look too much like a windows background. I think this one is unique and still clean and calm.

+1 Plasma. However, I don’t dislike gnome. Gnome just doesn’t fit my personal taste of workflow and customizability. Other that that, gnome did a pretty good job on the look and feel department. I feel at home on Plasma (and almost at home on xfce)

zhenbo_endle, in Is the Windows Subsystem for Linux worth it?

I had been using WSL2 for about one year. The experience was terrible compared to a Linux host. (Sadly I can’t change the system on my work laptop). However, it was much better than Cygwin, msys2 and powershell - based on my experience.

If your host OS is windows and you’re interested in Linux, I think WSL2 is a good way to have a try

firejail

ufw

And docker if you are paranoid. (You can completely shut off the network of specific commands – can’t get any better (and safer) than that!).

draughtcyclist,

I love ufw… So straightforward and easy to use.

It’s a pity that docker doesn’t work with it well…

GravitySpoiled,

Doesn’t podman solve that issue?

Pantherina,

Yup securitywise I would also say Podman > Docker

Pantherina,

Firejail has some big security flaws. There us bubblejail, which uses the way better bubblewrap also used for Flatpaks.

But the Bubblewrap and Flatpak Situation is quite complex. Flatpaks, as well as Podman containers, require user namespaces. Through these namespaces programs can get privileged access to system components, which is why secureblue now has bubblewrap-suid installed.

bubblejail maybe uses that binary already, or it needs to be patched too.

  • Pantherina,

I am no expert but it is possible. So the namespace has to be set by root and then used

    idiocracy,

I keep seeing firejail being recommended though, were the security flaws still not fixed?

To add to this systemd can do everything they can. You can isolate network, do fire-walling, and sandboxing pretty easily. Any OCI container can be used too if you don’t want to install something too.
