NotATurtle, (edited ) in How do you use your tiling window manager?

I mostly work in qtile in a fullscreen layout or a diagonal split between two windows. My hotkeys are super+d for rofi in dmenu mode and super+q for a shutdown menu also in rofi.

For my LineageOS phone I use ADB: adb pull /sdcard/DCIM/Camera to get photos I’ve taken for example.

OP may need to install ADB and enable USB debugging. Here’s a guide if they don’t know how

swytch,
@swytch@lemmy.ml avatar

If OP installed GrapheneOS they likely already have adb and USB debugging configured.

That said, as recommended in the FAQ, one should use android-file-transfer, since enabling USB debugging (and using adb) is a security breach

@Aradia@lemmy.ml avatar

Actually, I always end up using ADB tools to get files or photos, you can get recursive files to get them all. I do it even with people that tries to get photos from their Windows machines, so I don’t think it’s a problem with Linux neither. This is the best way to get safely and correctly all your files.

Gnome + pop shell extension. Normal i3 tiling keybinds. All the following bindings include super. w for tabbed layout, f1 for calculator, f2 for Firefox, f3 for nautilus, f4 for settings, f5 for package manager. D for search which I can use like dmenu but much better. Shift+s for screenshot. Shift+q to quit application. I program with in the terminal so I need tiling for keyboard-only use. when I first used i3 I underrated tabbing. It solved nearly all of my problems with tiling.

Anecdotally and perhaps of interest, my current workplace uses a regular Dell PC running lightly customised 10-year-old OpenSUSE. It’s a UI control interface for a large machine

Because the machine’s expensive and production-critical, the PC isn’t allowed to be connected to any networks (security airgap). It’s sort of the antithesis of most corporate Linux usage: constantly online servers that do very little direct user interface

Munich’s city government switched to Linux for a few years as part of a push towards open source software.

There’s some programs like One Laptop per Child that donate laptops running Linux to education programs. I think Pine64 ended up donating a chunk of their base-level Pinebooks to some schools but I can’t find a blog post that states where they donated them to.

Not sure if this is what you were looking for.

Jayb151, in I'm Done With Windows, Are you?

I just installed kubuntu on my daily driver. That didn’t go super well so I tried endeavor, also didn’t go well. It could be kde plasma, but it did not feel like Linux is ready to compete for something that is ready out the box.

That said, I run endeavor on my little netbook tablet and it works a wonder, so no idea. I couldn’t even get steam to load on my desktop for some reason. I tried Linux on my desktop for half a day, then decided to run back to Win11 with my tail between my legs. It just wasn’t with the hassle. Steam didn’t work, permissions for my second hard drive for Plex were messed up. I just didn’t want to have to figure it out. I’m back comfy with windows, and just experimenting with my netbook for the time being.

I really wanted Linux to stick this time… Oddly, I was using Ubuntu on my daily driver back in 2012 without a problem.

AVengefulAxolotl,

Its crazy how polarizing the Linux experience can be. Was it a desktop or laptop? For me it was just a few clicks (Manjaro then Endeavour) on the first try and be done with it on my desktop PC. Also with dual booting.

Hopefully next time you will have more luck! “Sadly” I cannot go back to windows now, I got Linux-pilled. Linux just treats my right without any Microsoft ads.

Jayb151,

Yes, I’m keeping kubuntu on my laptop because it works great. My desktop is going to have to be Windows for now

BigTrout75, in I'm Done With Windows, Are you?

Nope. I have to know how fix everyone else’s computer.

ISOmorph,

You’re a nicer person than I am. Being able to (lie and) say “no clue how that works on windows, I use linux” is a freaking blessing

My next Laptop will be Pangolin 15’ from System76. A bit on the expensive side, but the unlimited support and the right to repair make it worth it. Following the specs, so you can have a look.

Like is not PRO, because you can do some light gaming on it, but definitely a good machine in my opinion.

mateomaui, in I'm Done With Windows, Are you?

No, I still need it for non-linux programs with no suitable alternative.

No, I’m not listing those for anyone to suggest inferior replacements. It’s a fact, not a debate.

I wish. Unfortunately I’m to locked into Ableton to switch. Wish they’d make it compatible with Linux :/

This is going to be unpopular, but you can easily compile both Python and R and configure them to your liking. For Python you can even use Anaconda3 and forget about installing most packages by yourself.

As for Julia, I usually just install the precompiled binary package.

So, any distribution you feel comfortable with will do.

Hector, in Looking for a good tablet PC distro

I have a Microsoft Surface tablet and Fedora with GNOME works pretty well on it. I usually use a stylus or the magnetic keyboard with it but when I do use the touch screen I dont encounter issues. I use PaperWM on top of GNOME and it makes it all so easy to use.

Davinci Resolve doesn’t support H.264 or H.265 on Linux??? I was planning on installing it soon, that’ll be a huge problem for me…

OR3X,

Correct. I was disappointed to find this out as well. Supposedly it’s due to these codecs requiring a paid license to use. With windows the license cost is baked into the cost of the windows license itself, but of course that doesn’t exist with Linux. It CAN work on Linux if you purchase the studio version of Resolve, but I wasn’t ready to shell out $300 for a video editor when I’m only producing content for Youtube as a hobby and for the fun of it.

drwankingstein, in Looking for a good tablet PC distro

each one of them has issues, I cant in good conscious recommend any atm

DetachablePianist,

That’s a shame. I have a few promising leads to look into; I’ll update this post with my findings and chosen winner once I pick one
