AutumnSpark1226, in Yubikey on Linux?
@AutumnSpark1226@lemmy.today avatar

I have tried a yubikey on ubuntu without any problems. Could you please describe what exactly isn’t working

mortrek, (edited ) in linux mint became super slow

Random shot, because it’s probably not an issue on Mint like it was on Arch a few months ago, but xdg-desktop-portal problems can cause apps to take forever to load, but run fine once loaded.

edit: Try removing xdg-desktop-portal-gtk and/or xdg-desktop-portal-gnome

jackpot,
@jackpot@lemmy.ml avatar

is that the syncthing thing i have cause that boots on startup

mortrek, (edited )

Portal basically is an interface/backend for flatpaks to interface with toolkits & DEs. If you don’t use flatpak, xdg-desktop-portal and associated backends should be removable. Even if you do, try removing the gtk and gnome backends w/apt. Hopefully it won’t try to remove a ton of stuff due to dependencies. Then, reboot and see if the slow loading problem goes away. If it does, you can try re-adding one or the other and see if it comes back.

Does logging in take forever as well?

Also after some cursory research, some people have had problems with portal on Mint after updates as well, just like on Arch. So… definitely try it.

this is a comment on my new post: it took 30 seconds but this got outputted and then the file ran: dave@dog: ~$ flatpak run org.x.Warpinator Gtx-Message: 14:29:03.389: Failed to load module “xapp-gtk3-module” Using landlock for incoming file isolation

SheeEttin, in I'm an idiot (arm)

Have you tried building it?

danielf, (edited )

RAR isn’t open source.

SendMePhotos, in Where can I find work?

What if my experience is 0 but I want to go this route?

SheeEttin,

Get experience. Get the RHCSA cert or something.

OneRedFox, in How I can enable i3-gaps?
@OneRedFox@beehaw.org avatar

In regular i3, that feature was added in version 4.22. You should use the i3-gaps fork on your distro if a package for it is available.

SheeEttin, in Upgrade vs Reinstall

No, it’s the same on the Windows side. Personally I like to build a new one in parallel, then migrate. I do plenty of upgrades on desktops, but I don’t think I’ve ever done one on a server (except stuff like CentOS 7 to 8 where it’s not really that significant of a change).

Migration is the safe option, but if it’s a huge pain to migrate, I might do the in-place upgrade with a rollback plan ready if it really goes poorly.

vikingtons, in GNOME and AppIndicator/system tray
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t have the answer, though im positive someone else here does. On Fedora, an appindicator extension is included with the distro, but disabled by default, and this is still suboptimal UX.

The biggest offender for me was the overview at login change with gnome 40. It was so controversial that it even pulled in Matt Miller to weigh in on the matter directly. The exchange is extremely disappointing

I still use gnome, and I feel that it’s still the most polished DE available, I’m just worried about what other changes they might incorporate without any user-centric reasoning.

sanpo,

Damn, this thread you’ve linked… I can’t believe they didn’t even want to consider giving the user an option to choose the behavior for themselves.

floofloof, (edited )

It seems to be characteristic of the Gnome project’s philosophy to do things in what they consider the best way rather than the way a new user might expect. It’s an admirable commitment to deliberate design rather than copying, but it may also make it unappealing to some users. Personally I don’t enjoy using Gnome, but I know people who love it. Thankfully in the Linux world we have options.

sanpo,

I don’t know if I’d call that “admirable”. It’s not the first time I see Gnome team basically telling the users “STFU, we know better”.

Wayland on nvidia is perfectly stable. Been using Hyrpland without issues for the past year or so.

vrighter,

quit fucking saying that! I still get random flickering on the desktop and flickering in games on a 1080. X11 is the only thing that lets me actually play games onmhe thing

MyNameIsRichard,
@MyNameIsRichard@lemmy.ml avatar

Wayland on Nvidia gives me a black screen with mouse trails so your mileage may vary

PseudoSpock,
@PseudoSpock@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Oh my god, this. Especially on the external monitor.

Dirk,
@Dirk@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m running Hyprland on my Intel laptop without any issues (but I’m doing not much multimedia on it). But on my Nvidia desktop, oh no. Screen recording is flakey (especially with multiple sources and audio recording to different channels) in OBS, video editing impossible due to heavy UI flickering, gaming has worse performance, watching YouTube has noticable lag.

For just opening your browser and doing non-multimedia stuff it’s fine I guess.

krimson, (edited )
@krimson@feddit.nl avatar

I have no issues with OBS, although I only use it for screen recording. It is my work machine (I’m a dev) but also game on it regularly without any problems. What kind of card do you have?

Dirk,
@Dirk@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m running a good old GTX 1080.

narc0tic_bird,

Maybe for you. Kernel 6.6, Nvidia driver 545 (also tried 535), RTX 3080, GNOME or KDE Plasma, two WQHD 165 Hz monitors. Got flickers in certain applications (for example Steam or some Electron apps), apparently related to how long they need to draw.

Along with Baldur’s Gate Vulkan API halving FPS compared to Windows/AMD on Linux, or getting black models in DX11 (DXVK), certain games straight up flickering or showing other glitches.

YMMV of course, but I find it hard to believe people have literally zero issues unless they have a very limited use case for their system.

I switched to AMD for Linux and while it’s not perfect either, it’s so much better.

flashgnash,

Wayland on Nvidia is not stable.

I’m using hyprland which adds another layer of instability as hyprland itsself can be ropey with Nvidia

Even with gnome Wayland I have had a number of issues though, electron stuff is dodgy at best, hibernation doesn’t work (might not be Wayland specific)

Applications don’t resize properly sometimes and crash more often

I think it entirely depends on your setup, I’ve had separate issues with Nvidia Wayland across my PC and laptop

Mikina, in ELI5 the whole Wayland vs X11 going on.

I’ve recently switched to Nobara, and has been unsure whether to go with Wayland or X11. Mostly because I’ve read that Wayland has issues on NVIDIA GPUs and will perform slower, so I went with X11 (On KDE). Is that still the case nowadays, or can I just use Wayland?

RenardDesMers,
@RenardDesMers@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s easy to give it a try. You just have to select it at the login screen and see for yourself if you’re impacted by any issue.

xor,

Afaik the Nvidia issues are pretty much resolved now, though it may depend on exactly which GPU you use.

It’s definitely worth using Wayland if it’s not having issues, and switching back is absurdly easy, so I’d recommend using Wayland and going back to X if you’re encountering issues.

Tldr: it’ll probably be fine, give it a go and see

aBundleOfFerrets,

Nvidia on wayland still has some nasty implicit sync bugs, but it is mostly fine.

drndramrndra, (edited )

IDK about KDE, but Nobara gnome has Wayland and xorg entries in the login manager.

Btw Fedora is removing x11 support, so that’s going to be fun for everyone who’s having issues with Wayland.

neytjs, in Linux Mint 21.3 has been released

Great news, I’ve been using Linux Mint (Cinnamon) since 2016 as my only operating system without any regrets. The newer versions of Cinnamon keep getting more and more stable too. I have virtually no hard crashes or freezes anymore.

gnuhaut, in is there any way to attach an audio to an image without re-encoding either

Haven’t tried it myself, but there’s lossless-cut:

github.com/mifi/lossless-cut

jackpot,
@jackpot@lemmy.ml avatar

is that for only trimming?

gnuhaut,

No. It says right there on the github, it can do all sorts of stuff. It can replace audio tracks.

SteveTech,

I believe avidemux will work for OP (with replacing audio), and it’s what I normally use (usually only for cutting though), but lossless-cut does look way more featureful.

lol

kzhe,

Did you read your own letter? It’s not relevant here.

TheGrandNagus, (edited )

If you like to tinker with your own system, that’s fine with us. However, if you change things like stylesheets and icons, you should be aware that you’re in unsupported territory. Any issues you encounter should be reported to the theme developer, not the app developer.

I don’t know whether you’re shitting on theme developers or GTK app developers with your comment, but they explicitly state that they think theming is fine, they’re just tired of people reporting theme problems as app problems. It’s a completely reasonable take.

If I were an app developer I wouldn’t want to open a bug report, then spend hours and hours investigating a reported issue, only to find out that my app was never the problem in the first place.

bitwolf, (edited )

It’s more targeted towards the DE developers.

Some use gnome but with their own theme and it can make normal apps look broken.

You can see this if you use an Elementary OS application while still using the default gnome theme as an example.

Or if you use Pop! Shell, and try to use a normal libadwaita app. (Although Pop Shell has gotten better about how they implement their theme)

Ableton’s Push 3 standalone runs Linux too. Same gripe about their DAW as well.
