Pantherina, in Linux Mint XCFE -> Gnome?

Yes, KDE is a lot different and has waaay more features, thus being more complex and sometimes a little buggy but not a Problem.

Wayland support is great, and this is a must.

I dont use GNOME but dash to panel + appindicators + normal decorations + x could fulfill some needs.

It’s obviously not representative of the overall Linux experience but I recently realised that messing around on the Linux bits in ChromeOS would be a pretty good way to learn Terminal things, at least for Debian. It’s sandboxed so it doesn’t matter if you screw up and if you do it’s like two or three clicks to start afresh, way simpler than setting up and resetting a standard VM for the inexperienced. It, of course, means using a ChromeOS device but maybe that can be a secondary lesson on having megacorps profit from your data.

After going back and forth from Gnome and more traditional DE’s, the latest Cinnamon scratched this itch for me. Shoutouts to the Mint team as well 👍

Anybody with experience with Cagebreak? I like ratpoison but maybe not having to port a lot of configuration by hand would be nice

Synthead, in Any experience with teaching kids Linux?

You can only teach someone Linux if they have a desire to learn it. If they don’t want to learn it, then they might learn that it’s “bad” or “weird” compared to mainstream OSes, which would be working backwards.

Snowcap7567, in Spending a few days with Hyprland made me realize how awesome Gnome is

I had a similar issue when I started with Hyprland to set up all the additional programs which usually come with a DE. But there are preconfigured setups which give you a “full DE” experience out of the box and you can customize from there.

I recommend SolDoesTech or My Linux for Work. Both have full guides on Youtube as well for “easy” Arch + Hyprland installs.

G-compris is great for kids. Both of my kids have only ever used Linux or Chrome OS.

Wow crazy detail. I’ll read it when I get a chance lol. I stopped at “I’m a single tasker” I recently learned about the term “monotropism” which is so me.

gurapoku,

I had never heard that term. I think I am bad at multitasking, but not to that point! :0 Maybe I’ll take an online monotropism test tomorrow and see what I get, just for fun

TangledHyphae, in Just install EndeavorOS lol

God I love lemmy, I would have probably never known about EndeavorOS otherwise. Time to fire up a vbox VM and give this thing a whirl.

Been my daily driver for months. I love it. And with proton everything just works on steam for the most part

Why not Manjaro ?

Pantherina,

Because manjaro does weird stuff with own repos etc

autokludge, (edited )
@autokludge@programming.dev avatar

People try to use Manjaro as Arch when it isn’t Arch. Manjaro has it’s own repositories that may not match Arch version. You install an AUR package that depends on an up to date Arch package to work and it fails.

It’s literally the worst distro, github.com/arindas/manjarno

Endeavoros is fundamentally better in every way, everything manjaro adds makes arch worse, and everything good they have comes from arch.

Helmic, in Spending a few days with Hyprland made me realize how awesome Gnome is

Starting with someone’s dotfiles is a much better way to start with these minimalist window managers. You can see what they did and only tweak the the things you want to work different. Still not as easy as a DE’s unified settings, but if you like that fine grained control it can be worthwhile. My setup is quite basic, but having everything bound to the keys I want lets me do what I want quickly.
