Atemu, in How to package software for many distributions in their native package format?
@Atemu@lemmy.ml avatar

You don’t.

No, seriously. Let the distros package your software; they know how to do that best.

radioactiveradio, in What has been your experience with Flatpak?

I try to limit the apps i install from flathub cuz limited space.

stella, in Am I going off the deep end by considering Fedora Silverblue or Kinoite?

Yes.

If Fedora runs fine, I see no reason why openSUSE wouldn’t. Friends of mine use regular Manjaro with the same Framework. Just keep using openSUSE if that’s what you feel most comfortable with.

I used Silverblue for a bit but got very annoyed by its rpm-ostree command. I think it’s too complicated for a simple single user setup.

Sentau,

Why did you find the need to use the rpm-ostree command¿? Isn’t the purpose of immutability to use flatpaks and containers to get all your apps/software

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

How to update the base OS then?

Sentau,

Well for me it auto updates and stages in the background. There is config file /etc/rpm-ostreed.conf in which you can set the AutomaticUpdatePolicy to stage. Then it will automatically check for updates once a day(I think) and will download and stage it. The update is then applied when you shutdown or reboot

If things changed for the better, great. Still think that for a single user setup Silverblue is a bit of an overkill.

Maragato, in What has been your experience with Flatpak?
@Maragato@eslemmy.es avatar

For recent machines it works fine, but on older machines it feels slower than non-encapsulated software.

magikmw, in This week in KDE: Plasma 6 Alpha approaches

Post says it’s ready as a daily driver. I want to help with bug reporting, is it good enough to replace current fedora plasma or should I wait for a beta?

MyNameIsRichard,
@MyNameIsRichard@lemmy.ml avatar

Well, it’s pre-alpha so expect a lot of problems

jw13, in 8 Websites Linux Users Should Have bookmarked

I highly recommend LWN.net.

corsicanguppy, in What has been your experience with Flatpak?

It attempts to copy binaries onto a system on a manner that avoids the single source of truth used for regular installables. So it invites dependency hell.

Is this the one that seems to need a binary running constantly in the vast in-between times when no installation is taking place? That would be a risk.

Never used it. I worked in OS security and don’t need that stress either at work or home.

  • stockRot,

    Flatpaks are integrated into the store. If you’re using fedora.

    If you’re using Ubuntu, then snaps are probably integrated. What I’m trying to say here is that your comment is useless if you’re not going to mention your OS

    I just had to switch my work computer from Arch to Ubuntu becusse they want MDM on all computers now, and flatpaks are litetally the only reason i can tolerate it.

    I now prioritise getting stuff from flatpaks, then the repos, and if they dont exist i use Distrobox to export any app thats only on the AUR for example.

    Spore, in Trying Out & Benchmarking Bcachefs On Linux 6.7

    Kent just made a reply on this.

    TL;DR: Fast on his machine. The reason of the difference is unclear though.

    wiki_me,

    Would help if they have a repo with a test suite anyone can run, like in science making it easy to reproduce results.

    dingdongitsabear, in What distro for a MacBook pro late 2013 15'

    whatever distro you choose, disable the nvidia graphics first. you’ll lose the display out but you’ll gain a cooler laptop with better autonomy. integrated graphics is more than enough to drive Plasma.
