Causally recommending linux and shutting down inane tech support questions aren’t the same thing. If I get asked: “X feature stopped working in the newest macOS. What do I do?” I tell them the truth: “I switched to linux to get the feature back.”
Do we really want to be bigger anyway? I kind of like where Linux as a desktop isn’t really big enough for all the scammers and malware makers to care.
(And I know it’s huge for servers and malware also targets that, but they are usually maintained by professionals, not your parents that would probably run every shell script they are offered as help)
If Linux would become the biggest desktop os you are going to find so much more bad advice whenever searching for help online. I wonder if the nice people we have now are really ready for when the terrible people invade the community.
Perhaps a little lesd nice for those of us already using linux, but definitely better for the majority of people for getting less scammed by big corps. But one plus for us would be better support for apps and games that are still mostly or exclusively on other OSes.
Yeah kind of partially agree but not entirely sure what to say man. I’ve had my windows machine and my Linux box hacked in the past, didn’t do much besides ruin my ability to do my homework and general productivity, so I can’t say much.
I would prefer there to be more actual meaningful stuff out there for there to be hacked and or made different but a lot of the time almost all complex systems compound into or towards static failure, just look at the USA with being a military hegemony like Sparta or China slowly running out of people to sell junk to, the big oil companies slowly trying to micromanage the shift to renewables, people that believe in conformity, confucianism and “the myth of stability” ironically usually slow down all of societies progress rather than supporting an actual stable diffusion of change
I like the way standardisation is going, everything is going to be on the bee standard and that that isnt being updated too well too bad. What seperates us from the windows users is we can evolve if ya look at the distro tree it looks a lot like natrual selection to me
Flatpak doesn’t conform to the XDG home directory, and that upsets me. Also we have an ongoing dispute between SI and IEC units on their GitHub. But I like it otherwise.
If your friend ends up not liking the GNOME desktop environment because it’s so radically different from the Windows UI, then maybe add the K in Ubuntu, I guess.
Well it very much does just work on mint. Selinux could potentially screw people but it seems better than that one arch based “extremely optimised” (forgot name) distro which broke on my first install. And fedora base is quite solid.
Check out Lime disto. It’s a friendlier interface and all the cool perks of Ubuntu. It’s built on the basic same architecture. I have had my Steam and many other games work. If it wasn’t for Epic I would go full Linux.
I’m sure you’re probably aware, but the Heroic Game Launcher has compatibility built in to install and launch both Gog and Epic games. Makes it almost as easy as steam to set up and get going. I can’t speak to any multiplayer/FPS games with anti-cheat shit though, probably SOL there
I tried it. It does have the launcher. However the Anti Cheat software of the game no one can get around. I’m even in their discord and the explicitly say it doesn’t work or load in. You can get into the game menu and the minute you instance in the game boots you.
