devfuuu, in What do you guys do when you want to run unmaintained programs?

Nix or guix are the proper solution.

marcos,

Yep, if you manage to make it run on them, you are set forever.

Pull a docker image of an old distro into an apptainer sandbox, install what you need within, then make a .sif image, should work pretty much in perpetuity. You can also try to make an Appimage.

sturlabragason,

That’s what DistroBox is for: github.com/89luca89/distrobox

huskypenguin,

I was coming here to post this.

renzev,

TIL about sif. Thanks, will give it a try!

2xsaiko, in What do you guys do when you want to run unmaintained programs?
@2xsaiko@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

First thing I’d try is to use a “period-correct” nixpkgs commit for the libraries. It might even have the package already.

renzev,

Hmmm I’m a bit hesitant about nixpkgs, since when I last tried using it (outside of nixos), many (modern) GUI apps were broken, at least on my distro, But I’ll give this a try if u/observanTrapezium’s suggestion doesn’t work. Thanks!

If the app uses OpenGL in any way, you need to use nixGL: github.com/nix-community/nixGL

Why is it that ever since upgrading Fedora I need to restart the pipewire daemon every time I plug/unplug headphones or else media freezes?

Sheeple,
@Sheeple@lemmy.world avatar

Because you also need to install Trenchcoat for it to work

chaotic_disorganizer,

Something similar is happening to me on Manjaro. Semms the newest pipewire update made it so it doesn’t auto-route devices to the main sound output anymore…

Pelicanen,

One thing that works for me on Pop OS is to switch audio device in the settings, it’s like the buffer gets filled up and switching device flushes it.

possiblylinux127,

Have you checked the logs?

0x4E4F, (edited )
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Because the sound goes through pipes and you need to let them rest, otherwise they might burst from the sound pressure.

Hmm… well that makes actually a lot of sense. Thanks!

Well, you have only 4 controls for him, up, down, left, right, whereas, let’s say Mario, also has fire and jump, so that’s 2 controls more, which makes pacman simpler, thus faster.

What should I do to use shared-memory communication from user-space on an immutable system?

possiblylinux127,

It should be fine

0x4E4F, (edited )
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

You should try and download some RAM from the user-space. Regarding the system, you should really switch to a muted one, I was extatic when my system stopped bitching all the time.
