vzq, in The machine is always broken

Funny thing is that over here in Europe the ice cream machines seem to work almost all the time. I understand that it’s because they use a different brand of machines, but I’m not sure about the details.

ji17br,

Canada here, never encountered a broken machine.

EmpathicVagrant,

There they had to change the machines to the other brand because the ones they use here (us) was found to literally be designed to require a ton of maintinence so they could make money charging for repairs.

TLDR machine designed to break breaks a lot, not allowed in Europe.

CAPSLOCKFTW, in How i feel on Lemmy

There were no actual efforts to establish communism in eastern europe. Only autocratic regimes backed by soviet russia.

Fazoo,
@Fazoo@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh here we go with “That wasn’t real communism!” as if any other communist state on this planet is any different.

LadyAutumn,

They are though. China, Vietnam and Cuba are all pretty drastically different and they are all communist countries.

NattyNatty2x4,

China is state capitalist, not communist

LadyAutumn,

The functioning of their government is absolutely unequivocally communist. They have allowed some form of capital interests, which I would not consider communist in definition, but the government retains control over nearly all those interests and the plan they’ve put forward from the beginning is to renationalize industries as they reach a point of competitive development with the western world.

Hexadecimalkink,

Give me an example of a capitalist society. Waiting.

lieuwex,

In what sense was it not an actual effort? Just because it quickly slid into non-marxism doesn’t say anything about the initial idea of the revolutionaries. Bakunin predicted exactly what would happen with Marxism, and it did every time.

If you are against an authoritarian state, the only viable way to communism is to skip the dictatorship part directly and just have anarchism.

ciko22i3,
@ciko22i3@sopuli.xyz avatar

Communism fails every time it is tried because it goes against human nature of constantly comparing yourself to others and trying to improve yourself. You will never do harder work if you can get the same reward for easier work, and you will look for other, less moral ways of getting the bigger reward.

Communism sounds great but it will never work until we have unlimited resources and completely automated labour.

CAPSLOCKFTW,

Nah, that’s just wrong. You can compare yourself in other ways than how much fake money you earn. Fun thing is: truly communistic society would mean easier work for most people.

And communism does work in small scale enviroments. Families, cooperatives, tribes. Sometimes neighborhoods.

This whole “Sounds great but won’t work” rhethoric is just what the ones that would loose their power in communsim want you to think. If you dig into it you will see, that there were and are a lot of efforts to discredit the idea.

InternationalBastard,

It's like saying democracy sucks because look at states like Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Democratic Republic of Congo and German Democratic Republic.

When people proclaim to be something doesn't make it true.

sizeoftheuniverse,

And here comes the guy who thinks he can do it better, this time without mass killings.

That’s why I just stick to old school chat rooms, forums, etc.

Sheeple,
@Sheeple@lemmy.world avatar

And those are unfortunately 90% dead as compared to 10 years ago.

Back then I could easily find multiple chatrooms for any fandom all incredibly active. Now I’m lucky to find a singular one that isn’t dead. Fandoms mostly moved on to the big monolithic sites like reddit where interactions and conversation are incredibly artificial

shiroininja,

eh, I don’t mess for fandoms unless you count tech, then in that case, IRC and Matrix are super busy. same with general chats usually.

There’s a lot of options out there for alternate mail apps, but what I really need is a decent calendar app. Don’t like always having to rely on web browsers for that.

Why is it a big deal? 2.5Gb takes like 20-30 seconds to download

technohacker,
@technohacker@programming.dev avatar

Bold of you to assume internet access is great everywhere

ExperimentalGuy,

I forget that some people have crazy fast internet. Mine downloads 2.5gb in like 20 minutes.

MrFunnyMoustache,

Until not that long ago, my average speed was less than 1 Mbps because of insufficient infrastructure in the area.

PraiseTheSoup,

With speeds like that why haven’t you downloaded a functioning brain yet?

Faresh,

2.5 GB in 30 seconds is 83 MB/s.

PraiseTheSoup,

Or about 660 Mb/s, which is how we typically see download speeds written.

joenforcer, (edited ) in The machine is always broken

It’s almost never broken. I have only been turned away for a broken machine one time ever, and McFlurries are more or less a monthly treat.

Sorry to break the internet meme, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t all that common.

Makanar56,

It’s probably locational and possibly the time of day. Since I understand cleaning them are a pain, certain locations may not prioritize it properly, or the downtime is always when you would go. The one by me for example has been down all of the 10+ times I’ve asked for something, but I know family members have gotten some ice cream there, so it’s not like permanently busted or anything.

BCsven, (edited )

The documentary on it explained that the cycles are timed to ensure proper cooling, and not warming too much for too long for sanitary reasons, so if an employee over filled the milk by a small amount the machine would sense the extra process time and default to needing a dump and clean. There was that raspberry pi device that would bypass that but for obvious reasons mcdonalds repair company lobbied against it.

Sabre363,

Improvement takes too much work, I just wanna have some plausable reason to not think I’m trash

Sabre363, in They are too expensive and gimicky either way

How does one wash wi-fi? Any special detergents or temp settings?

tubaruco,

you put the router in the washing machine. of course, you have to poke a hole for the cables, since the router has no wifi when its turned off.

then, you turn the washing machine on. water should be enough but if you want to be safe you can put salt.

when the machine beeps you’ll have successfully washed the wifi away from your router.

OsrsNeedsF2P, in They are too expensive and gimicky either way

Don’t worry, like smart TVs, wifi connected devices will become cheaper than their alternatives soon

SomethingBurger,

Do dumb TVs still exist at all?

ILikeBoobies,

Yes, look for commercial tvs

datelmd5sum,

You can get a 55" gaming monitor.

SomethingBurger,

1700€

Fucking hell. Is the screen made of diamonds? It’s 4x the price of a TV of the same size. What are they smoking?

gornius,

Mainly GTG response time and latency. For watching movies it’s generally not a problem, but when it comes to playing games with a mouse, latency can be a huge issue, and bad GTG response time leads to smearing.

But yeah, 4x the price is ridiculous.

rifugee,

Maybe the smart TV’s are being subsidized by the money they make selling the data they collect from you?

SomethingBurger,

Sure. But this doesn’t account for the whole 1000€ difference in price.

MisterD,

Yes and they cost more!
