rifugee,

For those that are confused by the name change, Jack is an old nickname for John. It was most popular in the 17th century and has been on the decline since, so I don’t think many people today use it that way anymore. Or any people younger than 70, anyway.

Of a similar origin, there’s Jim for James, Dick for Richard (giggity), Harry for Henry, and Sally for Sarah, among others. I think some of these are more popular than others, but it seems to me that they are mostly out of use in general, though some of the nicknames live on as normal names.

rifugee,

Disregarding acting ability, I don’t think Pattinson had the physicality for it; he didn’t look big enough to me to be believable. You could really tell the Batman costume had a lot of padding when you saw him as Bruce Wayne. I think he’s just too lithe, for the lack of a better descriptor, for the character, you know?

rifugee,

I think /u/WarmSoda may be as pleasant in real life as their username.

rifugee,

Oh shit, I think I just discovered a kink. I have always enjoyed ripping open those bags, but I have never had the opportunity to rip fishnet stockings. Now, it occurs to me that I may really enjoy ripping open a pair of fishnet stockings to get to the…fruit…inside.

rifugee,

Maybe they meant that they’re already done masturbating for the day? Just 20 minutes into browsing? High praise indeed for this incest coffee porn, I say. Good job, Folgers.

rifugee,

You are absolutely not supposed to do that. In fact, you’re supposed to do the opposite. Letting your car idle to warm up kills it faster because the oil pump isn’t running because the car isn’t moving.

That is absolutely not true. The engine runs the oil pump, so the pump is working as long as the engine is spinning, assuming the pump is not faulty, of course. I’m not aware of any car engine ever built where that isn’t true.

That being said, idling your (modern) car for longer than a minute, or as long as necessary to defrost the windows in the winter, is a waste of fuel and, consequently, emissions. It’s also an unnecessary wear on mechanical parts, but not because the engine is cold or hot, but simply because it’s in use.

rifugee,

I’m surprised that you have had bad experiences.

Evil corporation and all that and I am uncomfortable defending it, but I have had a drastically different experience.

I frequently get stuff next day or within 2 days and always get refunds without having to jump through hoops or anything and there are multiple places to choose from for dropping off a return. Also, the price is almost always cheaper or within a dollar of where I can find it elsewhere.

I’ve had some things take longer to arrive but they are clear about them not being prime and are up front about the delayed arrival time before I submit the order so I know what I’m getting into and if it’s something that I need quicker I just pick a different similar product that is prime eligible. There’s almost always an alternative that is a similar price with faster shipping. I’ve never had an order not show up either. In fact, I’ve never had to even call them or contact support at all.

It’s too consistent to be good luck. Hell, it’s so convenient that I feel guilty for buying stuff that I could get locally for a comparable price but would require me to fight traffic and stand in line to pay.

Maybe the difference is regional? Or maybe a rural area vs city thing? I don’t know. I guess the bright side for you is that you’re spreading your money around? Regardless, it sucks that you’ve had so many issues!

rifugee, (edited )

You used to be able to download without signing up.

Edit: Apparently not everyone is being asked to login like me now. I’m not sure if it’s a regional thing or maybe my VPN is triggering something?

rifugee,

Really? Every time I visit, it asks me to sign in. Maybe it’s by region or something?

rifugee,

…okay? I was just making an observation.

rifugee, (edited )

Sure. When I go to “opensubtitles.org” I get redirected to the login page. Here’s the screenshot: imgur.com/a/bhGTeC1

Edit: After I login, it works as you described, by the way. It’s not really a big deal; I was just surprised that it started happening since I hadn’t seen any mention of that change anywhere. I’m even more surprised that it isn’t happening to everyone.

rifugee,

There is not any info about why she’s a single mother. Maybe her husband died or left her? Who knows? Maybe we shouldn’t fall into the trap of judging someone based on our assumptions?

rifugee,

Pennsylvania does seem to be really far east for anyone to legit think that they’re in the Midwest, but I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting, yet, and don’t know much about the people there. I can offer some perspective on a couple states that aren’t exactly Midwest states:

Eastern Colorado is geographically and culturaly indistinguishable from Kansas, so I can see how people living in that area could consider it being the Midwest.

Since Oklahoma, my home state, was mostly just Native American territories it wasn’t really part of either side of the civil war and so I think a lot of today’s population don’t want to be associated with the south and its history. I personally would hate to be called a southerner, but I don’t think midwesterner is necessarily the right fit either.

rifugee,

Especially the ones that are so fucking obnoxious that you have to go through it to even view the site. I don’t bother most of the time. The banner should be unobtrusive AND there should be a button that rejects all. I shouldn’t have to go and click edit preferences, uncheck a bunch of check boxes, the click confirm. There are some sites that are doing it correctly, but they are few and far between.

rifugee,

We had a recreational marijuana referendum in my state and the opposition signs said, “Save the Children.” From what? I have no idea. Unsurprisingly, the vote failed.

Of course, it really helped that the state legislature sued to halt the referendum on grounds of improper procedure which caused the referendum to be put on the ballot as a special election instead of the mid-terms ballot. The judge dismissed the lawsuit, by the way.

The shit some people will do to stop other people from having a good time.

Or burn your apartment down (Christmas lights, for example), which you would be on the hook for without insurance. It also covers your stuff if you get robbed. I personally think that it is indespensible.
