Weyland, in that's how it works, right?
@Weyland@lemmygrad.ml avatar

If you don’t enjoy doing your hobby unless you’re producing something of substance that can help you receive praise from others. Is it really a hobby you do for the sake of personal enjoyment and growth or just something you think society views as a worthwhile past time you’ve latched onto just to get validation?

What I like about my car is that it wears its history proudly.

And that scares the shit out of anyone around me because it looks like I intentionally smash into people.

It’s just how I got it, but I certainly enjoy using that to my advantage.

I get that. My Civic has been through the wringer lately.

Here it is in 2020 getting some minor flood damage.

It got high enough to mess with the computer, but the car still worked fine after. The odometer would just disappear sometimes. That has since resolved itself. But I’m sure that some electrical gremlins will crawl out of the woodwork in the next few years. The water brought out a lot of odors hiding in the upholstery. It stank bad for a few months after, but it smells ok now. It does get a little fresh on hot humid days.

Here’s the poor Mustang parked across from me. I’m sure they weren’t having a good day after that.

Here it is not six months later after a major hailstorm passed through.

I got on Safelite’s website immediately because I knew glass was going to be in short supply very soon. They came out a week later and threw a new one on. That was just over 300 bucks. Another great part of owning an old shitbox is how inexpensive parts are.

Aside from this, my wife got into an accident in it in 2015 and then I got rear ended twice in 2019. We still have the car. It keeps on trucking along. I do want to replace it with an Accord of the same vintage, but that’s because I want a cheap manual I can daily.

oh my! so sad!

MajorMajormajormajor,

On my phone when I first saw the picture of the interior, the push-pull lever for gas tank flap and trunk looks like an angry face. Just thought you should know.

DoomsdaySprocket,

I just did front brakes on my mk4 Jetta…. in the middle of a west coast snowfall, aka “the world is ending, just like last year!”

Simpler, cleaner design than industrial equipment, and that stuff is made to be worked on by gorillas like me. Actual work time was less than shoveling it out of 14” of falling snow.

All hail the manual shitbox!

Thank you. I tried it. I can’t stand the stuff. I’ve been drinking V8 though, so hopefully that will help.

I drive an old Toyota pickup with almost nothing still attached in the factory way, I doubt I’d even notice if someone hit me.

GoodStuffEh,

I miss my '87 yota… 2WD long box, 5 speed hooked up to a 22r. Hands down the best $400 I ever spent honestly. It was fully painted in bed liner and had two different side mirrors, one of which disappeared while parked at a friend’s house over night, and a rusting box patched with spray foam (which always had moss growing out of it, no matter how much I cleaned or cut away). Sad times: https://lemmy.ca/pictrs/image/58952ff8-9348-4d46-aee9-75722c05b37d.jpeg

praise_idleness, in that's how it works, right?

I think this a lot too but at the end of the day, it won’t be much fun of a hobby when you don’t even need any practices. Part of having a nice hobby for me is having that moment when all the gradual works pay off.

SnotFlickerman,
@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’ve seen it described as humans need some general ideas to feel like life has a point.

I’ve seen it broken down as autonomy (the feeling of driving your own destiny), mastery (the feeling of mastering a subject), and purpose (the feeling that what you’re doing “means something”).

Hobbies often fill the niche of “mastery” despite not improving our lives appreciably outwardly.

MedicPigBabySaver, in The best part of driving a shitbox is that I don't have to care too much about it.

I’ve noticed significantly less tailgating ever since my rear bumper and trunk were damaged from a dumb bitch that rear ended me last month.

I’d leave it as is… but, it’s pretty ugly. I want my baby back in shape.

sukhmel,

Maybe it’s worth to get everything fixed but slapping a painted damage on the bumper to deter the racers. But then it will look ugly again ¯_(ツ)_/¯

MedicPigBabySaver,

Ha, yeah, I prefer nice looking v. bitchin’ about tailgating.

TheGoldenGod,
@TheGoldenGod@lemmy.world avatar

I know what you mean, my paint job has degraded due to sun damage and the cars general value being worth less than a paint job. So I might as well hold out buying a new car as long as humanly possible. 😣 The cars lasted over 20+ years, so I suppose it’s a win.

And not always the chill “I live on a commune and make shirts out of hemp” communists. We’re talking about the “let’s have an armed revolution” communists.

KpntAutismus,

and “if you don’t boycot everything remotely connected to right-wingers you’re a nazi” has happened to me more than once.

in the german communities you’re also very likely to be heavily insulted if you express your enhusiasm for cars, letalone trying to explain why we can’t switch everyone over to either public transportation or EVs.

All 3 are leftist, based on rejecting individual ownership, and related to FOSS (tangentially in Star Trek’s case), and all 3 are nerdy as hell. They have a lot in common under the hood.

When I didn’t have health insurance and needed a cane to walk I would play this game with shitheads that drove up into the crosswalk. Do it, mfer, my spine is more expensive than your car.

psycho_driver, in The best part of driving a shitbox is that I don't have to care too much about it.

Yeah not my proudest moments but whenever a douchenozzle zooms up behind me as I’m just getting around someone in the fast lane and I flip my blinker on to move back into the slow lane and I see the asshat darting into the slow lane to go around me I just keep moving over.

Transporter_Room_3,
@Transporter_Room_3@startrek.website avatar

Same. I doing the things I’m supposed to.

You’re the asshole going 90 in a 65, swerving in and out of traffic.

If you want to try and brake check or fuck with me afterward that’s fine, I have a dashcam and am more than willing to follow you if you try hit and running. I’ve got the time, now.

CatZoomies, (edited )
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

I used to think a slightly different way when I was younger. That these bad drivers needed to be taught a lesson. I would always catch up to them at a red light and shake my head no in disapproval and do a thumbs down.

Then one day a driver I did that to stuck his hand out the window and waved a handgun in my direction. Looks like he had something to prove and wanted to teach me a lesson, too.

Lesson learned: no matter what, you never, ever try to shame, scold, escalate, or “teach a lesson” to another driver. Ever. You have no idea what that person may do, and how quickly they can end your life. Would be a shame for you to wind up on the news as a dead person and your family to learn you were killed due to road rage.

Over a decade since that incident, I’m married and would never do such a thing. If I had children, especially when in my car, I’d hate for them to see negative/retaliation behavior come from me - or worse, for them to see me exhibit any kind of road rage. I’m now older, wiser, and a much safer driver and better human being all around.

Granted if someone tried a hit and run, I’d be on the phones with the cops and would follow them from a distance enough to get a good description and tag numbers.

Edit: Yes, I’m American. How did you know?

KpntAutismus,

username checks out tho, at least you have that going for ya.

wellee,

That’s the right thing to do though. You’re indicating switching lanes, finished passing, and they’re in the fast lane. I just assume they need to pull off at the next exit and ignore it.

People in brand new $90k+ vehicles tailgating my 17 year old Kia like it’ll make me go faster
