JoJoGAH,

Organic ,non bot, actual real conversation, is not going to skyrocket. It’s going to grow like a real world thing. This is good imo

Guster,

So much agree on this. I also feel like there are comments on Reddit posted with the sole purpose of gaining upvotes. Here there is no need to do that so the content you do get is a lot higher level

Boozilla,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

I still love Lemmy. It’s nice to be able to post or comment without getting an automated response telling you you’re doing 15 things wrongs for trying to participate like happens on schmeddit.

TangledHyphae,

Was there some stat released somewhere showing lemmy “losing users”? I’m pretty new and plan on sticking around, the quality here is infinitely better than reddit.

ohlaph,

I feel the communities that I’m part of here have decent engagement. Even if it’s losing users, I feel it’s still high quality.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Yeah. I’m more concerned with quality than raw numbers.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

How many of those that we’re losing are dead alts, bots, and trolls? I’m not that alarmed.

Gorilladrums,

After the big surge happened from Reddit and the anti-Reddit hate died down, a lot of people start realizing that this place sucks. It’s confusing to use, it’s polluted with Marxists and other brain dead extremists everywhere, and it’s an inferior platform compared to Reddit. There are no niche communities, there are very little non political communities, and the amount of active communities is very limited. At the end of the day, for a lot of people, their love for the community on Reddit outweighs their hate for Spez

LinkOpensChest_wav,

Really? I’m having a much better time here than I ever did on reddit.

Gorilladrums,

Lemmy is a niche place. Unless you’re far left politically or you’re big on privacy like I am, there’s no real appeal to this place. The average Joe would much rather use Reddit despite its flaws. There’s nothing here for fandoms or sports or movies/shows or anything really. Outside of a few toxic political communities, some privacy/piracy/tech communities, and a bunch of mediocre meme communities… this site is as good as dead.

LinkOpensChest_wav,

Well, guess everyone has to go where they’re happy. Personally, I don’t find too much to like about reddit. It’s a hypermasculine right-wing platform with the most off-putting users It’s been my displeasure to interact with. There’s some of that here, but they usually get uncomfortable and leave, which is fucking great!

Gorilladrums,

Lmao just how far left do you have to be to find Reddit of all places to be right wing? Reddit is one of the most infamous left wing echo chamber. They’re not evil enough to be Marxists but calling them right wing is just straight up inaccurate.

LinkOpensChest_wav,

I feel quite the opposite. Reddit is populated predominantly by far right-wingers masquerading as libertarians. Things like racism, sexism, LGBTphobia, and xenophobia run rampant on the default subs. Every single thread on r/all is filled with them, and if you report them, you’re likely to catch a ban for “abusing the report button.” I actually got an IP ban for reporting a threat against trans people. Then there are the status quo warriors who fantasize about meting out violence against anyone who doesn’t fit the norm. Then there are the pedos, pedos everywhere.

Most of the so-called “leftist” subreddits are actually right-wing neoliberal subs, r/SubredditDrama or r/AgainstHateSubreddits, for example. These are not leftists or post-leftist, but system-defending pro-state pro-hierarchical neolibs. It would take a true fascist to call these people “leftist.”

And the admins are Nazis.

I like it here because it’s more moderate. Sure, there are some awful neoliberal mods on lemmy.world, but most of the users there seem alright. I’ve never felt like I’d be banned as an anarchist or for saying things like “punch Nazis” or “punch transphobes” like I was on that other hellsite. This place is much more welcoming.

shani66,

what are you on about? i can go argue about the latest seasonal anime if i want, i can go look at one person uploading little witch acadamia pictures every single day because they can, i can go find new visual novels, i can even just stare at touhou fumos.

shani66,

how is it confusing to use? its simple as all hell, my guy.

slurpeesoforion,

Reddit for porn and porn only.

SoccerGod,

So 3h every day?

slurpeesoforion,

I don’t have three minutes to beat off, let alone three hours.

jol,

Lemmy is really lacking in that department. But I’m OK with reddit being just a porn site.

PP_BOY_,
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

And I’m also okay with Lemmy lacking in “porn” (read: OF spam and bots)

lost_in_the_bewilderness,

I miss Tumblr porn… nothing will ever be the same.

clanginator,

Old gonewild was pretty great too, before all the onlyfans spam

Gebruikersnaam,
@Gebruikersnaam@lemmy.ml avatar

Bdsmlr is decent, depending on your taste.

shani66,

man those were the days

Grimm,

RIP kittiesandtitties.

CatTrickery,

I use Lemmy more than I ever used Reddit. It seems to be better at finding higher quality content

nixcamic,

Lemmy really feels like early Reddit right now. I mean that in a good way. And not to flex but I’m saying that as someone with a 16 year old Reddit account haha.

treesapx,

Same here. I feel Reddit changed for the worse so slowly that I had completely forgotten what the glory days were like until I came to Lemmy. I forgot that there was actual discussion in the comments rather than the same ten lazy comments ad naseum.

I’m kinda surprised Lemmy is losing users since it feels like there is more engagement since I joined earlier this year.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

There’s so much of the “same ol” on reddit.

Top posts seem to follow a structure. Top 5 comments are the same jokes. A lot of the askreddit is regurgitating from a year ago.

Honestly it feels like chatting with AI bots. And I wouldn’t be surprised if reddit is secretly inflating their numbers.

shani66,

i can’t definitively say the bots are keeping reddit afloat, but its the bots keeping reddit afloat. before i left the anime memes sub (the normal one, not one of the infinite crappy off shoots) was nothing but bots.

hear hear, i left cold turkey like 4 months ago, haven’t looked back.

MargotRobbie,

Some of you who are complaining Lemmy are seeing though rose-tinted glasses about what reddit was like back in the day. The majority of the site was never good, and it had always had plenty of embarassing/messed up things on there that you had to sift through, but it’s a different, sterile kind of bad now.

Here are a couple of reminders of what reddit was actually like, in no particular order.

  • Ron Paul
  • Faces of Atheism, "Euphoric"
  • AdviceAnimals, Rage Comics
  • Spacedicks
  • r/jailbait
  • The entire Boston bomber saga

This is why I would never admit to using reddit in public, and until recent years, I would imagine most people won’t.

So if anyone complains about how the current content on Lemmy is driving people away, remember, Lemmy is positively TAME compared to this supposedly “Golden Era” of reddit.

Alexstarfire,

It sounds like you’re listing bad things about reddit but what’s wrong with advice animals and rage comics? I don’t really know any drama around Ron Paul or Faces of Atheism either. The latter certainly sounds like the name of a cult though.

drivepiler,

I miss the niche communities. So much knowledge about hobbies, crafts, cooking, anything. They will grow here though, with time.

bizzle,
@bizzle@lemmy.world avatar

Faces of Atheism was the single most cringe shit that I’ve ever seen, it was a bunch of fedora-wearing neckbearded atheists posting pictures of themselves overlaid with edgy and pseudo intellectual quotes by themselves. The euphoric one was the best lmfao I’m gonna copy/paste it here from the KYM page

“Just to be clear, I’m not a professional ‘quote maker’. I’m just an atheist teenager who greatly values his intelligence and scientific fact over any silly fiction book written 3,500 years ago. This being said, I am open to any and all criticism.

‘In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my intelligence.’”

Alexstarfire,

😬

Cringy but who cares?

ComeHereOrIHookYou,
@ComeHereOrIHookYou@lemmy.world avatar

omg the reddit atheists, r/jailbait drama, spez editing user’s post. brings back memories.

HawlSera,

Reddit Atheists make me wish there was a God

pandacoder,

Even when I’m not active on Lemmy, I am not on Reddit.

If I ever need information from Reddit (unfortunately there is still a lot of information only on Reddit…), Wayback machine I go.

Even if me requesting that Wayback machine archive a page, once it’s saved we don’t need to give reddit anymore clicks, Wayback machine gets the clicks instead. It’s better than losing information outright.

hyper,

I’ll be honest I still use Reddit when I’m trying to solve problems or look up niche stuff. But the iOS app is garbage… on my phone I only use Lemmy.

nephs,

I’ll click reddit if duckduckgo takes me there. But I’ll not upvote, comment, not even login. :D

Ookami38,

I still “use reddit” in this way, too, mostly that the top and beat results for obscure information tend to be reddit, but I don’t consider this “using” reddit, personally

Resol,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

In my case, I use it completely logged out now.

Alexa,

Reddit is still super useful for information you can’t find elsewhere. But its only for as long as old.reddit still works for me. If that disappears then i don’t think I’ll be back on Reddit again.

Gomiyboy,

I should post more than I do. My engagement rate is low. Reddit is no longer an option.

LemmyIsFantastic,
rowanthorpe,
@rowanthorpe@lemmy.ml avatar

I never used Reddit other than the rare view via a search-engine when trying to find something. I now lurk Lemmy daily but barely ever post. I read so many enlightening things here. Not leaving.

Shepy,

Blocked reddit on my router, to prevent accidental clickage - no intention of going back there at all

ExfilBravo,

Same. I named the block settings “Fuck Spez”.

JokeDeity,

IMO the constant posts about users dropping aren’t from people who want Lemmy to succeed. Anecdotally I haven’t noticed a major change, still seems as active if not more than when I joined. Reddit has gotten worse and worse in that time period. I have faith.

explodicle,

I’ve noticed a couple “it’s because they defederated the servers filled with trolls”. Federation is bad for numbers, good for user experience.

Micromot,

I don’t even understand where that is coming from, even if the user numbers change the experience could still be the same
