I quite like the star-button on Mastodon for this. Just pings the comment author that you appreciated their comment. So, it’s not an indication to some algorithm that this comment is incredibly relevant for everyone, because well, some comments just aren’t.
I upvote for visibility, downvote for being rude. It’s not entirely me agreeing or disagreeing. Sometimes I upvote a person I argue with because I see this argument and their effort valuable to the community and want others ro see it, same with posts.
I have set both short and long swipe right to be upvote in my favorite clients (Memmy, Voyager). That way I can rapid fire the upvotes on a discussion I like.
If I feel compelled to get off my ass and downvote something, it’s always two clicks away in the menu.
