FUN FACT(S) :D

I did some research and this is what I found:

  • According to this StackExchange thread, the phrase “penny for your thoughts” originated no later than in England in 1562.
  • According to the Bank of England, £ 1 (pre-decimal) equates to approximately £ 386.21 in 2023 September.
  • According to XE.com, £ 1 at mid-market rates on 2023-09-30 was worth approximately $ 1.219 97.
  • So, considering there were 240 pence in a pound in 1562, that means that 1 p in 1562 would in fact be approximately equal to $ 1.96 on 2023-09-30.

Conclusion: taken literally, it would nowadays be around 196 pennies for your thought! ^_^

metallic_z3r0,

At the time this phrase was first referenced, around 1540-ish, a penny would’ve been worth around $3.50 USD. Goddamn Loch Ness monster, always wanting my thoughts.
