rhythmisaprancer, in There is a new horror movie on Hulu that caught my eye.
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

I can't get much info as a non subscriber. Does this film involve slow deaths? Great title.

Gregorech,

Its reviews on IMDB are brutal 4.9/10

LastYearsPumpkin,

I doesn’t actually. The sloth is very spry.

dustyData, in Why is everything a sequel, reboot or remake?

Here’s another essay about this by Patrick (H) Willems. It touches on other factors as the risk adverseness of theaters and producers. The death of the movie star, the high costs of CGI, the devalue of the cinema experience by way of Netflix straight to stream content, the rise of streaming in general, profiteering by executives, the raise in TV series budget, etc.

But quite pointedly, it touches on the fact that audiences have been trained for decades now to stay at home and not to request higher quality media. The emotional experience of “going out” to the movie theater, spending the evening engaging with an unknown novel narrative, trusting the director and the publisher to keep you entertained for a couple of hours is all gone. Mass marketing media has made it so that this experience is not possible anymore, so people have stopped requesting it. People only invest on blockbuster, $200MM+ mega productions. So they go to the theaters once or twice every year for those mega events. But people no longer go any random weekend to a theater just to see something that’s being played there regardless of mass marketing. It would take years to retrain audiences that such an offering exists and that they don’t have to hunt on streaming services or pirate movies just to emulate that random Saturday evening experience at home.

the_q, in Why is everything a sequel, reboot or remake?

Because it’s cheap and people keep buying.

kandoh, in Why is everything a sequel, reboot or remake?

People want the familiar. That’s why mom & pop stores lost out to chain retailers, why your dad just wants to go to chilies again instead of trying out that new place that just opened.

HeartyBeast, in Why is everything a sequel, reboot or remake?
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

It’s low risk - or, it’s at least a more quantifiable risk. It’s easier for studios to be able to estimate the returns on investment

fiendishplan, in Well, it was nice while it lasted?

I seriously thought this was a gag at first, sad.

Crackhappy, in Wonka | Trailer #2
@Crackhappy@lemmy.world avatar

I have no clue at all if I will like this. I did hate the music in the trailer but I found the idea intriguing. But it would be so hard to get right.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

I think this trailer skews closer to the Gene Wilder version but it still feels super forced. It just feels like “who is this for?”

Whirling_Ashandarei, in The Iron Claw | Official Trailer HD | A24

Well this looks fun, cast looks incredible at least and not in the over-the-top way where it’s all superstar actors.

wintermute_oregon, in [DISCUSSION] [SPOILERS] - THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER - Ellen Burstyn, Leslie Odom Jr., Olivia O'Neil, Lidya Jewett

This movie was very bad.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

I just rewatched the original and was going to check this out but it is universally panned. Every opinion I’ve watched/read/listened to says it’s terrible. David Gordon Green just seems to want to ruin all these classic horror franchises. What’s next?

wintermute_oregon,

It’s nothing like the original. It’s filmed really well. Two of the actors are good.

The whole story is a d rate horror that makes zero sense.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

ugh, so disappointing. The only positive I’ve heard from this movie is Ellen Burstyn demanded that instead of her pay, they set up a scholarship for young actors. That’s awesome.

wintermute_oregon,

She dialed it in. I won’t ruin it for you but she’s so bad In the movie. Not because she lacks talent but the garbage they have say and what happens to her character is garbage.

The makeup is actually decent. Lighting. Etc. all good.

Story is just awful. They plan to make two more. I don’t see how as this was bad.

There was one jump scare. Otherwise nothing. No real horror. My girlfriend said she’s never been bored in a horror movie or felt so bored

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, I heard she is barely in the movie. And the other cameo I heard about is nothing.

Yeah, I can’t believe it’s a planned trilogy. It does seem that DGG may not be returning to direct though, so that’s promising. From what I’ve heard about the story of this and based on how Haloween went, he seems to be obsessed with the community banding together to fight. And that just doesn’t make sense for an exorcism. I will watch it at some point just for curiosity sake, but I don’t think I will be spending money on it.

wintermute_oregon,

The other cameo was disappointing. Very flat and needless.

I like rogue one and the cameo for Vader was incredible. That’s how a cameo should be done.

This was just a cameo to that person was in it.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

Yup, there should be a reason for a cameo, not just a “hey remember this person”

Qualanqui, in Did anyone see No One Will Save You?

Fantastic movie, I especially liked the body horror aspect they used with the ETs, the way they moved and the huge long limbs etc.

Spoiler time though, I reckon it was all the parasites. The only way they can survive and propagate is by assimilating new hosts, that’s why there were a bunch of different ET species but they all looked uniform and they were all sexless too because the bodies are just vessels for the parasite, they have no need to reproduce. Also why the ETs didn’t care she ganked those other ETs, the parasites escaped and there were plenty of new hosts to be had, it was only when she tried to crush the parasite that they got angry.

And the end bit where the ETs are talking about what to do with her and that ET’s throat is vibrating, it’s because the parasites are discussing what to do with her and not the hosts. The tall classic ETs are powerful telekenetics so it would stand to reason they’re equally powerful telepathics too so they wouldn’t need to talk vocally.

So I reckon the parasites cooked up the “perfect world” shown at the end to keep the humans minds docile while the parasites piloted their bodies around, assimilating new species.

fox2263, in Friendly reminder that AVATAR is really just Aliens….

I loved the part in aliens when ripley inhabited the body of an alien to get learn from them

jordanlund, in Cinemark will let you watch every Oscars 2024 Best Picture nominee for just $40
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

$4 a pop? Pretty good… But I gotta say, I’ve already seen the ones I’m interested in. Maybe the Holdovers.

I heard about Poor Things and watched the trailer and I think that’s too weird even for me and I love good, weird movies.

youtu.be/RlbR5N6veqw

jivandabeast,

Poor Things is definitely a weird one but it was so fucking entertaining

I’d recommend it, but not to a general audience for sure

Mr_Rosewater, in Seems we've already got the plot for Barbie II

Greta did get nominated though…

crazyminner, (edited ) in Netflix Packs on More Than 13 Million Subscribers in Q4, Well Above Expectations

People without friends or family with a jellyfin server need their escape from this shit capitalism. Looks like they are willing to pay a little more. Wonder how long that will last.
