Don’t a lot of scammers spoof their numbers?

Cqrd,

Not the ones that want you to engage over a period of time. A lot of scams, especially for old people, involve long back and forth conversations over days. These are usually very profitable for the scammers, who sort of gain a passive income for doing nothing other than stealing from old people.

Rocketpoweredgorilla,
@Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca avatar

Ah ok, that makes sense… trying to build up trust I suppose.

A_Very_Big_Fan,

One of the main goals of scam baiting is getting a number to call them back on. But yes

RedditRefugee69, in Scam Numbers - Reddit's (and possibly the internet's) largest scam number depository, now on Lemmy!

Can someone explain to me how to use this data to block calls?

nilloc,

I was under the impression that (at least in the US) scammers don’t reveal any real phone numbers with Caller-ID. That they just chose random numbers with your area code and similar exchange digits to try and convince you it’sa let local call (like you drs office or whatever you may be waiting on). Is that not true?

RedditRefugee69,

All my scam calls come from numbers in my area code or close by

Welcome! Consider sharing on !communityPromo

Also these are a universal links and they makes it easier for people to subscribe from other instances

  • !scamnumbers (simplest, but some apps don’t support it)
  • link (more complicated and requires someone to be on Lemmy when viewing the link)

Otherwise people can use something like the instance assistant browser extension

WanderingVentra, in Scam Numbers - Reddit's (and possibly the internet's) largest scam number depository, now on Lemmy!

I didn’t know there was a subreddit for this. That’s cool. Definitely subscribing.

But why is it hosted on a .zip domain? Edit: for clarification, I don’t have anything against having different instances. I’m just wary of anything using the .zip tld.

DripGeronimo,

I’ve switched instances from lemmy.world to lemmy.zip as .world was very slow with updating their server

ZeroCool, (edited )

It’s for the best anyway. It’s better for the health of the fediverse when communities are spread out across a wide array of instances. The consolidation of communities on lemmy.world is not ideal. Good luck with the community!

lemmy.zip is a tech oriented instance. They have !technology and !databreaches which are quite interesting

Levsgetso,

Saw you recently created an account here. You truly are everywhere lol

Yes, I’m trying to promote that instance a bit, the admins put a lot of work into it

Levsgetso,

They really are amazing. Glad to have you with us 😊

Great writeup and easy to understand. What would be a solution to this problem?

418teapot, (edited )

I hate that Google is exerting even more control on the internet with their TLD, but I don’t really think this attack is made all that much worse with .zip TLD. I can already bury a .com in a long URL and end it in .zip just fine like so:

github.com∕foo∕bar∕baz@example.com/foo/…/baz.zip

Or even use a subdomain to remove the @:

github.com∕foo∕bar∕baz.example.com/foo/…/baz.zip

The truth is most people don’t look much at URLs outside of a domain to verify its authenticity, at which point the .zip TLD does not do much more harm than existing domains do.

For mitigation, Firefox already doesn’t display the username portion of the URL on hover of a link and URL-encodes it if copy-pasted into the url bar. It also displays the punycode representation when hovering or navigating to the second example.

tkk13909,

Exactly

So did they deliver on the promise of press ganging my Pokemon to work in a guns factory? Because if they did I’ll go buy it right now.

danciestlobster, (edited )

And you can make those chumps work slave hours and literally meat cleave them if they displease you. Theoretically you can be an ethical trainer instead i guess, I wouldn’t know

Tikiporch,

Plus, there’s poaching endangered creatures.

Is it this one? !palworld

“c/palworld” will only work for people who are in lemmy.world. It’s better to link the community as !palworld, now everyone accesses it.

I’m apparently the second subscriber. I’ve been curious about this game; people describe it as “Pokémon with guns”, but what interests me is “Pokémon minus The Pokémon Company and GameFreak”. If they release a Linux version and are able to deliver a good singleplayer experience (I bloody hate multiplayer) I’m sold.

sebinspace,

Currently playing it on my Steam Deck. Proton handles it pretty well, performance is alright if you lock it to 30, and the controls all work, even with correct button prompts

lvxferre,
@lvxferre@mander.xyz avatar

That solves one of the matters (Linux). What about the other? Is its singleplayer fun?

theit8514,

Honestly I would describe it as Ark-lite. It has base building/taming and that’s pretty fun, and you can also get random encounters at your base. The leveling system is a bit grindy. There are dungeons and bosses in the world to go find and explore. The map is huge, I think I’ve hardly explored a tenth of it.

Been playing about 15 hours or so and enjoyed it, but the game is definitely early access. I’ve had a number of crashes, fell through the world a few times, etc. I’d give it a month or two if that bothers you.

pikasaurX4,

Single player is fun if you like to play survival crafting games alone. “Pokémon with guns” is not actually a very good description. It’s a monster capturing game, and the creatures are cartoony like Pokémon, but it’s a third person survival crafting game. No turn based elements or choosing monster move sets or anything like that.

It’s more like Ark with Pokémon instead of dinosaurs

Curdie,

Palworld is better with friends because I have good friends but the game doesn’t get twice as hard and frustrating when you’re alone. I enjoy games that encourage coordination and teamwork , but I think that kind of gameplay would be out of place in such a whimsical world.

Master,

You can choose power sets.

kboy101222,

Yeah, it’s Ark but infinitely less grindy and with Pokemon

CrypticCoffee,

Try cassette beasts. Definitely scratches that itch. A great indie game.

simple,

Also shoutout to Monster Sanctuary. It’s quite different but still a great monster taming game.

MisterNeon,
@MisterNeon@lemmy.world avatar

Cassette Beasts is way better than it has any right to be.

@lvxferre@mander.xyz avatar

I’m checking it now, seems interesting. And Monster Sanctuary, mentioned by @simple
Thank you both!

CrypticCoffee,

You’re welcome. Enjoy!

HawlSera,

It’s really not “Pokemon, but not held back by GameFreak”, it’s more like “ARK, but it looks colorful, plays like BOTW, and has a Pokemon inspired creature catching gimmick”

If you’re looking for an edgier, more creative version of Scarlet/Violet, keep looking.

If you’re looking for “Minecraft Pixelmon, but for Adults”

This is for you

lvxferre,
@lvxferre@mander.xyz avatar

The game doesn’t really want to run in my potato (it has 16GB RAM, and I tried to run it through WINE so…)

That’s a shame because “Minecraft Pixelmon for adults” does sound nice for me. I also liked Ark quite a bit.

HawlSera,

Indeed, you are the audience.

There’s an open source Linux reimplementation called Notepad Next.

Aurix,

Though the application overall is stable and usable, it should not be considered safe for critically important work. There are numerous bugs and half working implementations. Pull requests are greatly appreciated.

Not very reassuring.
