thfi, in What if I paid for all my free software?
@thfi@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Many projects accept donations, for example for server costs or travel expenses (conferences, meetings). You can setup recurring monthly transfers to projects whose software you use most often. Examples are the Free Software Foundation for various GNU tools or the KDE project.

That’s what I did, hence the essay ;)

@2xsaiko@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

but that requires paying for a domain

You say that as if (normal) domains are expensive. You’re gonna be paying a lot more for electricity for your NAS than a domain. If you don’t need anything recognizable which you just want to use for yourself, you can even get a 1.111B class domain (000000.xyz - 999999999.xyz) which are just $1 per year. It’s a much better option than a dyndns service because you can actually do whatever you need to with the domain.

EugeneNine,

yep, use a free ddns service if you don’t want to pay

Could you elaborate where can I get one of those for about three fiddy?

2xsaiko,
@2xsaiko@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

The 1.111B class domains? gen.xyz/register

avidamoeba,
@avidamoeba@lemmy.ca avatar

Thanks! Odd, it seems they aren’t available from other registrars for this price.

lemmy_user_838586, (edited ) in Where do you get your information about new software?

On android (though I wish I was using a true gnu/Linux phone…) I open Neo store every once in a while and peruse the explore tab, sorting by most recently updated. Neo store is a better f-droid client (a source for open source android apps)

For desktop Linux, i guess you could do the same, (though for some reason i haven’t) and peruse the free sofyware marketplace that comes with your linux distro. I also used to google articles about top 10 new open source apps for ubuntu 2023, or similar google searches. I also used to read a bunch of Linux, open source, and linux hardware related sub-reddits that I’ve been slowly trying to replace with Lemmy communities, right now I subscribe to:

C/f-droid

C/hardware

C/homelab

C/Linux

C/linuxhardware

C/opensource

If anyone has anymore I should subscribe to, suggest away!

I also browse YouTube which in the past has suggested videos of people reviewing new open source apps or software. Though those video suggestions have gotten worse as YouTube’s algorithms have gotten worse in the last few years.

Also in the past I’d peruse alternativeto.net to see if there’s anything better in the open source world for proprietary software, or even alternatives to existing open source software I use.

Interested to hear more about what others do!

mindbleach, in What comes after open source? Bruce Perens is working on it

You want open source treated well? Remove IP protections from closed-source projects.

It’s like patents versus trade secrets. If you show your work and agree to let anyone play with it, there are incentives provided. If you rely on secrecy… and people figure it out anyway… tough shit.

wahming,

Can you provide some examples of software benefiting from IP protections like you mention?

mindbleach,

You want examples of software protected by copyrights, trademarks, and/or patents?

wahming,

You said ‘if people figure it out anyway’, so I was interested in an example where people are able to figure it out but not allowed to duplicate it

mindbleach,

Reverse-engineering. Binary patches. Basically a free-for-all for anyone who owns a legal copy of a thing.

Please be advised I won’t give two shits about any hair-splitting over the word “owns.”

wahming,

Are reverse engineering software and binary patches currently illegal?

mindbleach,

In some contexts.

Is there a particular goal for this rhetorical poking?

wahming,

Uh, genuine interest?

mindbleach,

Sorry, it just sounds like it was leading to some “ah-HA!” reversal, being so brief and general in response to normative statements about a complex topic.

Removing DRM is generally somewhere between outright illegal and getting attacked by flesh-eating lawyers.

Blizzard killed an independent Warcraft / Starcraft server called BNetD.

Nintendo’s whole attitude toward emulation is infuriating nonsense pushing for digital art to slowly rot.

@chrisbit@leminal.space avatar

As someone who has used Last.fm for 19 years but lately looking for better music discovery options, I’ll give this a go.

PropaGandalf,

You can import all your data natively!

chrisbit,
@chrisbit@leminal.space avatar

That’s a big reason why I’m giving it a go! Currently importing page 1200 of 1800.

synae,

Definitely going to check this out when I get home.

Aside from last.fm, can it connect+import history from other services, like Spotify?

PropaGandalf,

Yes spotify is supported as well. Unfortunately Tidal isn’t. But if you are on linux and you are using Tidal you could download the tidal-hifi client which bas a listenbrainz integration or you could download the listenbrainz app which can sync data from multiple clients including all music streaming services, newpipe, odysee, …

turbowafflz, in How do I make contributors to my project transfer copyright to me?

optissima,

Yep, I really want to fight android SDK again. Just release it on fdroid like other open source projects.

dog_,

Or be nicer.

optissima,

That has nothing to do with the topic, you’re right, I could’ve put it more nicely. I’m just tired of “compile it yourself” to people without computers being considered an appropriate answer for a criticism of bad distribution. This app seems wonderfully useful and could have huge popularity, but it’s being artificially gatekept by the creator.

dog_, (edited )

It’s not being gatekept, they’re saying that as an alternative. They said they would release it on F-Droid tomorrow.

Edit: or… Create an issue on the GitHub repo, idk.

Edit2: Never mind

UnfortunateShort, in Enshittification of GitHub?

Compared to Gitlab, it definitely is shit already. And that has nothing to do with the artificial restrictions. God I hate this website. I appreciate their service, but the UI is genuinely trash.

FriendBesto, (edited ) in Alright boys, I've been converted to the light side and have installed F-Droid. Now what?

It really comes down to what is your use case. Also, a bit of a mindset change since you have to do a bit more research on some apps yourself, nothing too bad, like checking on the App’s Github if they have one, to see issues or bugs. Some of which may apply to you… or not. F-Droid has a link for most apps on their app.

Personally, I removed almost all apps on my phone that have ads and/or improved privacy in one way or another.

I used to use Nova but I found KISS launcher or it’s fork TinyBit Launcher much better. Why? Because I do a lot of searches and liked that it is search focused and you can add all types of different searches once you know the proper syntax. From Wikipedia, to Youtube, to Searxng, to Dictionaries or DuckDuckGo, you can add almost all search engines. The app is really, really light on resources and it does what I want it to do.

I dropped all Google products, rooted my phone and removed them off my phone along with Google Play Services. Avoid all apps with any trackers. Albeit I still have a couple that I still need. But it is a great improvement.

Use K9 for mail, OpenVPN in lieu of my VPN provider’s app, BraveNewPipe or NewPipe w/Sponsor block for Youtube and other services. Use Mull instead of Firefox, due to being more privacy focused. Eternity for Lemmy, as a, well, Lemmy client.

KDEconnect to send/ping/transfer/control PC’s and phones over local Wifi. It’s free. Now, I know that many people may not use it, but I set up a Nextcloud Instance on my server and thus have Notes, Maps, RSS reader, File and Bookmarks Sync all through that by using their free apps. All available for free from F-Droid. But you do need a server.

Also, Termux as terminal. You can do lots with it due to all the apps and services you can install and run. I used to run a Searx instance from my phone and I used that to search along with my VPN.

For weather I use either QuickWeather or Geometric Weather, with icons you can get for free from the Playstore.

davidgro, in What OS or FOSS SMS app do you use that supports RCS?

Not yet possible. Google hasn’t provided an API to access RCS from 3rd party apps. They did to Samsung’s messenger (1st party as far as their own phones), but as far as I know that is the only other one currently. (Verizon for a while had their own RCS implementation and infrastructure and their own messenger app could access it)

Sensitivezombie,

Well, that’s too bad about RCS.

floofloof, in Alright boys, I've been converted to the light side and have installed F-Droid. Now what?

Do we still do that reddit thing here where we assume everyone is male?

sag,

I think girls don’t really care or they do? Because I use ‘bro’ talking or texting to a girl.

merde,

why defend defaultism or sexism? It may sound harmless to you, you may be used to it, but “alright boys” is exclusive and not, like some need to claim, a default greeting.

pineapplelover, in If I create a OSS app with analytics to detect & log crashes with feature use, is it a bad practice?

For foss apps, I mostly allow analytics to track to help the dev out more. Complete 180 for any big tech since whenever they ask for it, they sell that information to the highest bidder.
