mulcahey, in What OS or FOSS SMS app do you use that supports RCS?

I’ve been using Beeper. It’s open source and built on Matrix bridges, also open source. For RCS you have to link it to your Google Messages

He wanted FOSS software. Bridging it to Matrix doesn’t make it FOSS imo.

lemmyreader,

OP wrote “OS or FOSS”. What is the license for Matrix, btw ?

SheeEttin, in If I create a OSS app with analytics to detect & log crashes with feature use, is it a bad practice?

This doesn’t really have anything to do with open source software. It’s more of a privacy topic. You can harvest as much data as you want and still be GPL.

@toothbrush@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’ve been waiting a very long time for this. This is the first GNUnet(aka the alternative more private internet stack) project to ever make it out of the prototype phase, and it lays the groundwork for more GNUnet projects. Also, this is probably the best version of the Digital-Euro idea, with none of the privacy drawbacks such projects usually have.

I didnt think it would ever happen!

I use Flow Launcher for that, but thanks!

dont_lemmee_down, in If I create a OSS app with analytics to detect & log crashes with feature use, is it a bad practice?

I think if you use your own Matomo instance I’m way more ok with it, than if you include google.

If your app could also be used by people from the EU, you have to be GDPR complaiant as IP adresses are considered personal information. The question if crash reports are necessary (in the sense of GDPR Art. 6) hasn’t been decided yet AFAIK.

catalog3115,

Crash reports really helps developers. A app can crash for various reason sometimes it’s the device itself(not the concern of developers) but mostly some type of bug. We use analytics to prioritise which bug to solve.

For Example:- There are 2 bugs one in share feature another in export. If lots of people use share feature, then we priorities share feature bug

dont_lemmee_down,

No I understand, I really do. I develop myself. The thing is, if it’s opt-out, then it does not seem to be necessary. If it’s necessary, then you have to show that your interest in bug fixing outweights the users right to privacy.

This seems like a great way to stand up and accidentally brick my laptop

maltfield, (edited )

Why? It defaults to just locking your screen. So you stand-up, the magnetic breakaway cable separates, and then you just have to type your password…

If you’re the type of person that would forget to lock your computer before standing up and walking away, then it’s exactly what you’d want.

wahming,

Well it mentioned shredding the encryption keys, and I was combining that with full disk encryption.

maltfield, (edited )

You definitely can do that, but if you’re afraid that you might stand-up and forget you’re using it, then you probably shouldn’t.

It’s probably enough to just use the default trigger that locks your screen. Or, once you get comfortable with it, set it to shut down your computer. Most people don’t need to shred their FDE keys, unless they’re facing torture.

In fact, we make it difficult to use “destructive” triggers (like the LUKS Header Shredder that wipes the FDE header) and intentionally do not include the ability to switch to it in the app. To use it, you have to do a lot of extra work. So most users don’t have this issue.

Ephera, in The issue to create a new main menu for Minetest has been open for 6 years.

I read up on it at some point and it was essentially a matter of their UI framework just being custom-implemented. Any advanced UI concept would need so much overwhelming support from the community, that a core dev then sits down for a few months to dish out the necessary UI components, that this is just not really happening. The core devs aren’t exactly bored most of the time anyways.

Having said that, they did recently renovate the settings menu using the UI components they already had, and that turned out really cool.

Also, I do feel like some smaller improvements could be made without big code changes, but yeah, those then end up in too many discussions.

The font has been discussed many times. To give you a taste:
Many want a font with fantasy style, but Minetest can also depict a futuristic setting. Others want a blocky font, but those usually aren’t very legible (i.e. accessible) and often only support a narrow range of languages.
I think, just a font, which looks less serious and less thin, already improves it massively, but you can’t even get folks to agree on that, because well, if the font is tweaked, you might need to adjust lots of UI components and mods and such to work with the different font dimensions. So, if a font change is made, people want to get it perfect from the start.

The button gradients are another case, where most people agree that something else would look better and it could be easily changed, but discussions just never end.
The community is just so big and so public, that there’s always someone new joining into the discussion, so that no consensus can occur…

So i understand if they prefer to focus on other issues.
