Disney is gouging customers with a near doubling of subscription costs.

Disney is raking its customers over the coals with a 75% price hike for their annual subscription (originally $80.) People wonder why piracy is on the rise.Multiple commenters are saying I’m off base about the 75% price increase. My payment less than a year ago was $79.99. Here’s the proof.

Cookiesandcreamclouds,

Guess I got lucky that I get it free with my family phone plan.

Patches,

It ain’t free my dude. You’re paying 100% of it. You just don’t have a choice.

AWittyUsername,

Yeah, imagine how much his plan would cost without this “freebie”

Patches,

Well if they were to remove it now - which they will eventually do. The price sure as shit isn’t going down. Numbers only go up.

Cookiesandcreamclouds,

Yeah, it’s only a matter of time before they pull it. Disney must extract every penny.

Cookiesandcreamclouds,

Okay, fair enough my guy. Makes sense, yeah.

SaltySalamander,
@SaltySalamander@kbin.social avatar

I love how $12/month is somehow "raking customers over the coals"

CassowaryTom,

Yeah that is actually pretty reasonable.

jeremy_sylvis,
@jeremy_sylvis@midwest.social avatar

Well, when the price increases by ~75% and the value does not increase by ~75%, this sentiment isn’t exactly surprising.

CassowaryTom,

I mean, it is a lot of stuff. If you have seen it all and you ate waiting for Pixar or marvel to crank one out then… wait. Dont re-up for a year.

jeremy_sylvis,
@jeremy_sylvis@midwest.social avatar

Right, so anyone adopting such a “buy for a month and binge watch” strategy can still pay ~75% more and not receive a ~75% increase in value.

Nothing is changed.

CassowaryTom,

Oh my god, I didnt even realize where I was. No wonder nobody is on my side. Godspeed, pirates, and thankyou for your service.

CassowaryTom,

Well no, im assuming most people subscribing to Disney know what they are getting. Mostly old stuff with some new series based on their properties. I liked Loki, bit that isnt the point. My point is you as the consumer have the right to tell Disney to fuck right off and if enough people do it, they will compromise and you still wont be happy because that is what compromise feels like. Personally, I still havent seen all of the Marvel movies yet.

online,

Does the service have non-superhero and non-animated-family-movies content? The name “Disney” puts me off, because I an not into superheroes and I don’t have a family so I don’t really watch animated family musicals.

CassowaryTom,

Yeah, they have a ton of stuff like that. Im not a Disney spokesman even though I sound like one in this thread. I think its a shitty company if im honest. If you are looking for a TV babysitter you could do worse., though

CassowaryTom,

I think I misunderstood your position. Here is mine. Disney wont provide stimulating entertainment for many grown people. ThATS it. Im done talking about it forever.

synceDD,
@synceDD@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe 75% down was never sustainable and they wanted to build a userbase? Try to think buddy

Surdon,

Maybe the question should be why the service was only just worth it at 75% down then

synceDD,
@synceDD@lemmy.world avatar

Why is that a question dont like it dont buy it

Surdon,

We aren’t. That’s what we said- the value proposition isn’t there

jeremy_sylvis,
@jeremy_sylvis@midwest.social avatar

Like about how that… doesn’t actually change anything that was said?

synceDD,
@synceDD@lemmy.world avatar

Don’t worry about it, disney bad 😁

reverendsteveii,

Unsub’d. Fuck that noise, I really only use them for Simpsons reruns between movies I give a shit about. So now I’ll steal the Simpsons and the movies. They overplayed their hand here.

loki_d20,

Thanks for the reminder to cancel! Ridiculous price for the amount of content they put out.

cyberpunk007,

Hm. Content on there is so lacking and we already use it so infrequently… If I had to choose between this and Netflix, Netflix stays.

Che_Donkey,
@Che_Donkey@lemmy.ml avatar

I had no idea they charged 80/mo…now upping that??? looooool. I always thought the new subscription services were between 10 & 15…we’ve been on the high seas for a long time I guess.

intrapt,

The post is about an annual subscription, not monthly

FurbiesAndBeans,

It’s per year, not per month

Che_Donkey,
@Che_Donkey@lemmy.ml avatar

lol…still had no idea

progettarsi,

guys, cloudstream exists

electrogamerman,

For all of you that supported the actors and writers streik, this is what happens to the common person. Dont get me wrong im not blaming anyone but the asshole greedy companies, but just so you notice, when a company does something “good” they are not losing, they are taking the money from others.

offbyone,

Disney has been very cheap to grow its customer base, then will increase prices afterwards, this was always going to happen.

electrogamerman,

Found the Disney employee

deur,

Disney Streaming Services / BAMTech / Disney Streaming is their own branch of Disney and this is likely unrelated to said strike.

electrogamerman,

Found the disney producer

synceDD,
@synceDD@lemmy.world avatar

Ok, why is a paid service posted here?

Krrygon,

I think they are just showing another example of steaming services being shitty, and using it to advocate for piracy

Waldemar_Firehammer,

^this guy gets it.

synceDD,
@synceDD@lemmy.world avatar

new sonic game 70$ should i post it here and tell people to pirate it? what is this logic

CmdrShepard,

That’s a singular product not a service. You might get an interesting debate by posting about something like the Xbox Game Pass vs pirating a bunch of games.

synceDD,
@synceDD@lemmy.world avatar

services bad piracy good but not games bad piracy good, I’ll update my circlejerk notes

CmdrShepard,

Not even sure what you’re attempting to say here, so I’ll just say have a good one!

quirzle,
@quirzle@kbin.social avatar

People enjoy their circlejerking.

stillwater,

Is this submission a direct link to Disney Plus on your app? I see an email saying they’re raising their prices by an outrageous amount and making piracy look better.

synceDD,
@synceDD@lemmy.world avatar

thing expensive stealing good? so you literally want to circlejerk ok

Flatworm7591,
@Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Why are you even slightly surprised that a piracy community would be advocating for pirating content? You gonna go to a furries community next and complain about all the fur?

stillwater,

No. The question is what you think this submission is because your read of it above is so inane, it’s like you saw something different entirely.

InvaderDJ,

I already cancelled my subscription. I’m going to the subscription hopping plus piracy route now for D+.

deczzz,
@deczzz@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Why do we care about this on a piracy community? I never cared about prices and fees I don’t have to pay for anyway! Tough luck for those of you how sub to Disney.

winterayars,

Good time to do outreach to your friends and neighbors :D

Waldemar_Firehammer,

The fact that there are multiple people in this community that have commented that they are cancelling their sub shows the value of sharing this post. Not all pirates are pure plunderers. There’s a good amount of us that pay for content that is appropriately valued to them.

I remember a study made by the government of my country, which was about how much people who dowloaded illegally, spent on legal content.

They didn’t published it, it wasn’t the result they expected, usually, people who dowload illegally, consume a lot of legal content too.

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

Is physical media still available for most Disney stuff? How viable an alternative is that now?

TigrisMorte,

Can you hear Capt. Hook calling?

satans_crackpipe,

The amazing thing is anyone ever paid to stream Disney…Disney adults are creepy and the corporation itself appears to be a child grooming & trafficking operation.

JustZ,

These streaming companies are dreaming. I hope people will just stop streaming. There will be massive street markets for hard drives and thumb drives loaded with pirated content.
