jmp242, in what E-Mail provider do you use and why

I use Fastmail - not too expensive, really good webmail client, has working shared calendar that isn’t OWA, and isn’t advertising scraping my e-mail. I would have liked a more private service, but back when I moved from self hosted to a service, that was about the best I could get that also had calendaring.

Tibert, in Anyone use Skiff?

I find what they are offering interesting. But I myself use Thunderbird on my pc, spark on my phone, to get the emails from Gmail and yahoo mail.

Skiff isn’t compatible with imap, and from what they are saying, is because it’s an encrypted service, and using imap would require to unencrypt them.

Taleya, in Should I become "privacy-focused" despite my data before I was "privacy-focused" was used or sold?

‘Should i bother installing door locks? Someone’s already been in my house’

Yes. They have everything up to X date. Protect your future

dingus, in I just want to say that I'm so happy that people are taking notice of privacy concerns in cars
@dingus@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m basically in the position that I’m driving a car from 1999, and when it finally dies, I’ll either be resigned to riding the bus or finding another aged used car without all this absolute bullshit in it.

Maybe it really is time for the Free Open Source Vehicle.

netchami, in Why there aren't ad blocking apps on Google Play

Let me summarize it for you: Because Google is an advertising company

possiblylinux127, in BusKill Dead Man Switch now available in a brick-and-mortar in Germany 🧱🛡️

Proxystore seems like a super cool place

d3Xt3r, in Is the fairphone really worth it?

No.

No headphone jack, no buy. It’s not a question of whether a headphone jack is useful to you, it’s just the principle of it - there’s no good reason to remove it (especially for the asking price of FP5), and more importantly, it goes against what the Fairphone stands for, IMO. I can understand if it were some other profit-driven company making a shrewd business decision, but for Fairphone to do it, seems very unfair to me.

digger, in I has come to my attention that some users have never heard of F-droid. F-droid is a free software app store for android
@digger@lemmy.ca avatar

Something worth noting is that F-Droid is both an app to download other apps but they also maintains a repository of apps. You can use alternative store apps (like Droid-ify) with the F-Droid repository OR you could use the F-Droid app with a different repository (like IzzyOnDroid). You can mix and match to meet your needs.

I use the Droid-ify app with the F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid, microG, NewPipe, and Collabora repositories.

Once you start down this rabbit hole, give Obtanium a look.

pH3ra, in Meeting new roommates for college and I suggested Signal and this was someone's response. I hate Gen Z.
@pH3ra@lemmy.ml avatar
  1. Create an IG account with a burner email and join the chat
  2. Sell all other member’s data to advertisement, scam telephone services, mailing lists, etc… subscribe all of them to newsletters from amazon and pornsites (or just wait for all of that to happen naturally)
  3. Wait for someone to bring this up
  4. "I told you, we should move to Signal"
  5. Bring everyone over
  6. Win
s20, in Meeting new roommates for college and I suggested Signal and this was someone's response. I hate Gen Z.

I hate Gen Z

Dude. I have a group that only talks on Facebook Messenger. It’s 100% Gen X and Millennials. Don’t blame the generation, it just makes you sound like an old man yelling “get off my lawn”.

fushuan, in Not that you guys need the reminder, but your work sees all your browser history and you may not even be able to delete it if you wanted to

if you don’t have your personal browsing using a private profile of a secondary browser which you know you can delete, you are doing it wrong.

hydration9806, in Starting today Facebook must pay $100.000 to Norway each day for violating our right to privacy.

For those who are dumb like I am, the fine is one hundred thousand per day and not one hundred per day (the decimal threw me off)

Nawor3565, in Google seems to be blocking API access for Piped video servers

Not to be a downer but… how did people not anticipate this happening? Google is likely going to do everything they can to shut down non-official clients like Piped, since they’re sidestepping all of YouTube’s revenue streams. Hopefully they don’t take the nuclear option and somehow lock down the API and make it much harder to download videos via tools like yt-dlp.

Supercharger, in A entry-based password manager?

The recently released Proton Pass is also open-source and audited, keeps all the entries (including metadata) encrypted, and has a nice UI on mobile.
