ultratiem, in In what world does a VPN need access to Camera and Bluetooth?

I don’t get why the entire world isn’t on Mullvad.

I don’t trust these guys at all. I trialed them and despite their full money back guarantee, they locked me into a support loop, always switching support staff with boiler plate responses and links that dealt with account issues or whatever. It wasn’t until I left a stern reply demanding the refund or I would escalate the matter with the proper regulatory bodies.

It took 4 support tickets. To me, they came across hella shady.

they closed off Port Forwarding

rwhitisissle,

Worst thing about mullvad is they only offer like 5 devices or so for your subscription. If they bumped it up to 7 or 8 I’d have no complaints.

somegeek,

For the price, 5 devices is really reasonable

fubarx, in In what world does a VPN need access to Camera and Bluetooth?

There are Bluetooth FIDO security keys out there for 2FA, like: thetis.io/products/fido2-ble-security-key. Some implementations can also use a phone, running an app via BLE. Not sure if they use it, but that could be one reason it’s asking for that permission.

Camera permission may be needed for scanning QRCodes to set up 2FA.

Omega_Haxors, in In what world does a VPN need access to Camera and Bluetooth?

If handfuls of youtube sponsor callout videos has been proof of, is that you should never use a service advertised on youtube.

ErKaf, in Signal tests usernames that keep your phone number private

What is this stupid website. Cant open it because they have banned my IP. Why the fuck do they ban MullvadVPN servers?

muhyb,

Surprisingly it’s fine on Tor.

AeroLemming,

Is it even possible to block Tor? You could block specific exit nodes, but not all of them unless you had a way to detect when someone was using Tor.

isa, in Signal tests usernames that keep your phone number private

omg i’m so excited for this

aprnu, in Signal tests usernames that keep your phone number private

c’mon Signal, gimme that apk & I give you some logs in return, don’t make it hard on me

aprnu,

Signal team must be following comments on Lemmy, ya’ll check this out, here is the standalone apk for testing

SecurityPro, in Signal tests usernames that keep your phone number private

Download and installed but it still insists on a phone number. I don’t see a way to bypass.

BobGnarley,

I believe they still require a phone number for the TESTING phase but it can be the same oje you already use for your regular Signal (if im understanding it correctly)

Still sucks you will need a phone number to use it though. Hopefully they adopt meshnet type technology similar to berty.tech so people can communicate even when the internet is shut off across all platforms with end to end encryption

butter,

Another day, another chat service.

Nollij, in In what world does a VPN need access to Camera and Bluetooth?

What kind of VPN would need those permissions?

The one that Edward Snowden (yes, that one) publicly and explicitly called out that people shouldn’t use. I won’t rehash it here, but it’s worth reading about.

Everyone should read it, or at least understand the main points of the book if they are invested in privacy related topics.

online,

Are there any good reading guides online to accompany it? I remember reading books like this in university and the professor would help us with critical reading. I bet there’s something out there like that. 🤔

alt, in Introducing Badger Swarm: New Project Helps Privacy Badger Block Ever More Trackers

Am I wrong to assume that this doesn’t add anything beyond what uBlock on medium mode does already? Except (perhaps) ease-of-use and the blocking of first-party trackers; if those even exist*.

Don’t get me wrong; I love EFF’s work and their commitment to digital privacy. I just want to understand if I, personally, would need it.

OsrsNeedsF2P, in windows and privacy

I’m a big fan of Ameliorated, it lets you turn any existing Windows install to a custom one with this thing called “Playbooks”. Their “Revi OS Playbook” has privacy as a rated feature, and although I haven’t used it, Ameliorated has always worked great for me in the past

alt, in windows and privacy

In terms of privacy, I believe Windows collects a ton of data even if all telemetry is disabled; granted this is an older article, so it might have changed since*.

Your best option is probably running Windows inside a qube in Qubes OS and ensuring that the qube doesn’t have direct access to internet. But, at that point, why not consider switching to Linux instead? Because, you’d have to run at least another qube (with either Linux or *BSD on it) to grab the files off the internet from in the first place.

EDIT: lol, I just noticed it said “window” in the post and not “Windows”. I thought the mentions of “blackout curtains” and “storm shutters” was OP either making a joke or some reference I didn’t get. LMFAO, I didn’t even notice the “Thank me in advance”. Guess I should probably go to sleep after this. Good shit-post OP!

Is pixelfed an entirely different platform? Sadly i have many good friends on insta who i talk with, and they wouldnt ever switch to anything else, so because of that im stuck with meta. Otherwise i would 100% leave it

nfsu2,
@nfsu2@feddit.cl avatar

It is Instagram but federated in a nutshell. Just like Lemmy is similar to Reddit but federated. Whoah, wait I saw your profile and you do not know about Pixelfed?

promitheas,
@promitheas@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Ahh i see. Im going to edit my post now to specify that Im looking for an alternative frontend to instagram, such as piped is for youtube. Sadly i have friends on insta that I cant stop using it for now because of
