AnonymousLemming, in New Outlook update sends passwords and mails on private servers to MS. Ulrich Kelber, TheCommissioner for Data Protection of Germany plans to submit inquires on Tuesday

Don’t use Outlook for non-Outlook email services. Problem solved. I am required to use Outlook for my work email, but I keep all of my personal email separate, accessed with FOSS email clients.

Good for Google (ikr) for basically telling other tracking/ad companies to f*** off.

Also, bad, for the monopoly reasons.

I see iOS folks getting told to use Private Relay(?) all the time (with i-something disabled). How is this any different than that, other than being run by G?

Not going to use it myself, but I guess its sort of a step in the right direction for the uninformed tech-illiterate. The next step would be to show the average person how to do the same thing without G’s help.

What’s a Google account?

authed,

If you don’t back it up it could be a major part of your life

I do my backups myself. I don’t trust Google for that, I’m not crazy.

  • JubilantJaguar,

    This requires a permanent phone number and it has to be different or else they’re gonna know it’s you

    Xirup,

    I guess this is the way, I really don’t want to lose my secondary account. Thanks.

    You could just override your local DNS to do so, but you’ll end up breaking other sites that try to load it at some point. Maybe try only using a bookmark?

    This would also create issue with certificates.

    They could rate limit it if you download lots of apps through aurora store.

    Google has made AOSP for years and never banned anyone for using it. They encourage you to tinker with the OS.

    Max_P,
    @Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me avatar

    Yes but only if you use their Gapps packages unmodified or don’t use their services at all. They don’t look as kindly when it comes to microG and Aurora, or even ReVanced, and they still fight to make sure Google Pay doesn’t work through SafetyNet and Play Integrity, and you’ll only know at checkout too.

    People have been banned for using Aurora. You can mess with the OS but they don’t want you to mess with their apps and especially not if it affects how much money they make off you.

    possiblylinux127,

    Have you looked at AOSP recently? Its mostly dead as basically all the core apps have been replaced with proprietary ones

    diffusive, in Am I running the risk of getting my Google account banned for logging into the Aurora Store or a custom rom like GrapheneOS?

    The question is not what Google does now but what it will do in 1month, 1quarter, 1year.

    It has been years that more and more petty measures have been taken.

    FWIW I would make a spare account

    Xirup,

    I sincerely consider that it would be permanent and without notice, because again, that’s Google and that’s how companies like Google work.

    I will definitely get a spare account, thanks.

    Hopefully (fuck Google )

    Xirup, (edited )

    Believe me, I also say Fuck Google, and I don’t want to get into it but there are certain apps that I download from unofficial sources (🏴‍☠️) and I really like them and consider that they deserve my money, and the only way I have is to pay for them in the Google Playstore.

    Pantherina, in Redirect Youtube.com to Freetube desktop app?

    Yes Freetube.

    But… maybe you also want to use an Invidious instance that uses googlevideo javascript instead of proxying the videos? So you dont actually suck their resources.

    Because Freetube runs on Electron which is Google, and I am not sure how hardened it is, probably just “not bad”.

    Do you know any minimal Invidious UI you can run from a Podman/Docker container? Like just the frontend, so that I can use Firefox instead of that. I think having that as a base and adding the freetube features would be great.

    mp3,
    @mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

    Maybe we’ll eventually see a version of FreeTube running on Tauri one day (one can dream).

    Pantherina,

    Damn, nice project!

    ExtremeDullard,
    @ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

    Electron which is Google

    How did you figure that out? Because Electron is based on Chromium?

    In which case, I suppose you don’t trust Brave because it’s Google too.

    Pantherina,

    Yeah Electron is Chromium hahahah. Sorry for the dumb abbreviation.

    Its bloat for sure. An extra app, it takes a time to load and all. Has really great features though, makes Youtube tolerable.

    No, I have ungoogled Chromium laying around but I am simply sad that Firefox Webapps or actual Apps are not a thing.

    DmMacniel, (edited )

    And Electron uses V8 which is again Google.

    ExtremeDullard,
    @ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

    V8 is open source. Just like Chromium, Google doesn’t control it.

    lea,

    They very much do control it and are quick to implement unwanted features in corporate interest like Web Integrity API, which has been removed again only after backlash.

    ExtremeDullard,
    @ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

    No they don’t: you’re free to create your own fork, or compile out the stuff you don’t like from the main repo - which is what all the Chromium-based privacy-focused browsers out there do, including Brave.

    Vexz,

    Do you know any minimal Invidious UI you can run from a Podman/Docker container? Like just the frontend, so that I can use Firefox instead of that. I think having that as a base and adding the freetube features would be great.

    Use your favorite search engine and you'll probably find something. Or self host a Piped instance. It's very similar to Invidious but imo even better.

    There’s a Firefox redirect extension… when I used to use reddit I redirected www.reddit.com to old.reddit.com

    Nobody will be able to give you a definitive answer. Google's ways are unknowable. You are running the risk of losing your Google account by having a Google account.

    Facebones,

    Everyone calls you crazy for de-googling until they move and Google decides it doesn’t like their new wifi and locks them out forever. 🤷
