Didn’t Costco’s pharmacy get in trouble for this exact thing a couple months ago? I have a feeling we’re going to see a story about this for all the major pharmacy chains.
I assume Whatsapp encryption is equivalent to https, your connection to the server is encrypted and “impossible” to be intercepted and decrypted, but on the server end everything arrives as clear text, so the only people that can watch your conversation is the recipient of the messages and whatsapp.
That’s not correct. WA claims to use end-to-end encryption. I have no reason to doubt that. It probably arrives encrypted at the servers, not as clear-text.
That’d also align with the business-model of big tech. They do lots of things with meta-data. And algorithms can infer lots of important things just by looking at that. I wouldn’t be surprised if they really don’t care about the exact content of WA messages.
Yeah. I think they partnered with the makers of Signal and took the encryption from Signal back in 2014 or 2015. I still remember the first of my friends adopting WA and it had zero encryption or protection against impersonating people. I used XMPP (Jabber) back then and just shook my head.
I moved my number to VoIP.ms and while it’s not nearly the same service wise, SMS do come to my email and I can call and receive calls via any VoIP app I want.
Pixel Experience has zero advantage for your privacy. LineageOS really doesn’t do much to protect your privacy (or security). That’s hardly surprising since privacy&security was never the goal of LineageOS to begin with. The only things Lineage will do for your privacy is 1. Remove Google Play Services 2. Remove your OEM’s built in tracking. Installing Google Play Services will negate 1. If you are serious about your privacy and is willing to make sacrifices, your best option would be GrapheneOS, followed by DivestOS. The latter supports many of the devices supported by LineageOS, so check if your device has support.
My device doesn’t have support for graphene or Divest unfortunately. Which is why I made this post. I am guessing that lack of Google play and Google location services alone would be a massive improvement for my privacy.
about time 😊 that’s not the goal; one of the first basic steps!
EDIT Sorry I should not have said it like this. Even though that was my honest feelings, said as free speech without any meany connotations, this should have been treated as good news, like someone finally ditched Windows.
One of the next steps might be to figure out how not to load GA.js GTM.js Google Fonts etc.
There is a long way to go to de-Google oneself, and unfortunately it’s not easy nor trivial. One subtle example: Google is a broker of Tor Snowflake, which could cause a difficult dilemma.
In any scenario the brand of smart TV is irrelevant as thet all impair your privacy. Cost and effort are sadly now a feature, but not too much of a challenge. Never connect your TV to the internet directly. The easiest step is a Chromecast. I recently needed to replace my dumb TV with a smart TV. For me I just bought a TV at a price point that allowed me to also buy a used old PC box plus a wireless keyboard a touchpad. You could alternately use a Raspberry Pi. Either way, you ultimately have control of what is shared or escapes for your privacy.
Its my understanding through some quick reading briar doesn’t have a built in panic button. But briar can be configured inside ripple which is similar to what I am looking for. But ripple only triggered by the device user. I am looking for a panic button which can be triggered from outside the device. Brair is only for android as well. While I despise apple, everyone else is drinking the koolaid. When the owner doesn’t have their device, compromised, lost, stolen, ect the device user can’t possibly trigger ripple, its not designed that way. Ripple is very nice though. I’ve used it. But doesn’t fit for the use case I’m asking about.
I prefer an authentication code, which I can save on a pendrive or, if not, a second email. I never use 2FA with a phone number, precisely because a phone is never secure and is also a privacy hole. It’s enough that they know my email, it’s not necessary that they also know my phone number.
Thank you!! Regarding cloud it could be something that can have a cryptomator container. I wouldn’t have much requirement regarding mobile app except for being able to upload backup of photos
Regarding DNS:
Right now I have it by default, so it goes through my ISP.
I use the VPN mostly when on the high seas… Having the DNS as default value wouldn’t be the same as using any other DNS address? When VPN is on, how is the dns at the netwoek settings behaving? I never quite understood this part!
PS: sorry for bad formatting. I wrote original post in computer, not on mobile the app is having formatting issues (Memmy)
Even before anything else, you should change your DNS from your ISP to one of the many third party, respected, fast resolvers. Clooudflare 1.1.1.1, Quad9 9.9.9.9, both do not log and are free. There are many others.
I use the paid $1.99 USD/mo NextDNS with malware-only blocking on my router, and malware, ads, trackers blocking on my Android devices, Linux desktop and Windows desktop.
Thanks for insights!! I was unsure if changing default settings on DNS would have any effect when using VPN. So it’s ok right? I’ll go for NextDNS, which makes me clear one of the issues in the list. Thank you!!!
