paysrenttobirds, in Do I need to be a resident of the EU to get their data protection or can I just be a citizen?

In a practical sense, I can tell you that in mobile apps, some parts of gdpr are implemented based on phone language settings or in the case of websites, the domain suffix of the page (.fr or .de, etc). I’m guessing this is an interpretation of the section described here:

strong indications that a non-EU business is intentionally offering goods or services to data subjects in the EU and may therefore be subject to the GDPR:

  • Use of the language of an EU Member State (if the language is different than the language of the business’ home state);4
  • Use of the currency of an EU Member State (if the currency is different than the currency of the business’ home state);
  • Use of a top-level domain name of an EU Member State;
  • Mentions of customers based in an EU Member State; or
  • Targeted advertising to consumers in an EU Member State.

Most people seem to be leaning toward just applying them to anyone as that’s the way things are headed and once you’ve figure out how to do it technically it’s easier to just do it all the same way. Also, the EU is doing it’s best to set precedent for a broad interpretation.

Hyperreality,

This is why the EU is sometimes called a regulatory super power. Because the market is so large and important, the rest of the world often adopts EU regulations. Whether it's GDPR or environmental standards, it's cheaper to make one EU compliant version of your product or part than different versions for different markets.

Not any other kind of super power though, we're far too busy squabbling amongst ourselves. Some still haven't learnt the lessons of the last two world wars.

TootSweet, in When a service advertise as 100% open source, do you expect the website to be open-source too?

The whole idea of a service being “open source” sounds like nonsense to me. “Open source” refers to code, not services.

Might as well call my cat “100% open source.”

I might use a term like “open source friendly” for a service to mean “can be used without using any proprietary software.”

Imprint9816, (edited )

Lol are you like 85 years old?

Open source is a term relating to software. Software is created using code. This isn’t a hard idea to track.

Software as a service is common. Feel free to read up.

get a burner phone and have a homeless person pay for it with cash… so you dont get on cameras (make sure you dont bring it home, dont have your regular phone next to it, dont drive with it while its ON, avoid all cameras, etc…)

Worried about DAS, but not about Google? 🤔 “USA Freedom Act”? They forgot about PRISM? DAS sounds just ISP work for PRISM law. As any USA company is forced to.

Anticorp, in A question about secure chats
  1. Meta claims it is e2e encrypted
  2. Meta claims they don’t have the keys and don’t scan the messages
  3. Meta doesn’t need to scan the messages to get meaningful marketing data about users
  4. Meta are known liars who will do literally anything for money

Do with that information what you will

Thisfox,

Due to a lack of any reliable way of backing that up, I cannot convince anyone else using the opinions of a random on the internet. I was looking for a place I can show them with evidence, so I don’t look like a conspiracy theorist with a pinboard full of string and coloured paper.

Anticorp,

It’s proprietary software. You can’t know what they’re actually doing without getting a job there and getting assigned to that project. But given Facebook’s long history of user hostile behavior, the statements from Zuckerberg that people who trust him are idiots, and the class action lawsuits against them for violating consumer trust and straight-up selling user data, I wouldn’t believe anything they say. Why use a 3rd party app run by a user hostile company whose entire business model revolves around capturing user data, when there are better alternatives out there? I understand that I’m preaching to the choir and I apologize. I’ve had the same argument with my two best friends trying to get them to use literally anything other than Whatsapp and they won’t. So we still communicate with a group sms on our phones. That’s better than Whatsapp as far as I’m concerned. You have my sympathies since your group is probably too big to just refuse to participate in and still get communications from.

J4g2F, in Plex starts narcing on its own users' anime and X-rated habits with an opt-out service, and it's going terribly
@J4g2F@lemmy.ml avatar

Everytime I hear something about Plex I become a bit happier with my choice for Emby as media server.

At the time of building my then server I could choice between them(jellyfin wasn’t a thing yet). Luckily I picked emby

finestnothing,

I picked Plex mainly because the lifetime sub wasn’t bad, and the features and polished interface were worth it. If Plex adds too many garbage/bloat features or removes useful features then I’ll jump ship to jellyfin immediately. Same boat for paying for bitwarden vs self hosting vaultwarden

This is the problem with proprietary software, it starts out fine, but as it get more popular the value goes down

PurplebeanZ,

As a former director of a tech startup it all goes downhill when you bring investors on board to raise capital. I had to do many things I disagreed with because once you bring investors in you generally end up facing life ruining financial penalties if you don’t deliver what they want.

lemmyvore,

Well you also get a fast cheque in exchange for that, right? 😸

givesomefucks, in Plex starts narcing on its own users' anime and X-rated habits with an opt-out service, and it's going terribly

Article says if you added “friends” to share what you’re watching, those are the only ones who get the email about what their “friends” are watching…

And it just reports content on your Plex that’s registered on IMDB…

Like, it’s not plex spying on your search history and reporting what pron you like to your friends.

If you have porn on your plex:

  1. Why?
  2. Maybe don’t sign up “friends” so they can see what you’re watching…
plz1,

You do know IMDB has porn listings, right? And “friends” includes people you share a library with, in either direction.

    Yeah, that’s a lot more fucked up.

    Share one movie and it tells them everything now?

    Even libraries have options to be shared, if it’s recommending from non shared libraries that’s real fucked up and sounds like a bug and not intentional

    LunchEnjoyer, in Best alternative to Chromecast?
    @LunchEnjoyer@lemmy.world avatar

    I just got the Nvidia Shield Pro (2019) model on sale during BF sale, totally a game changer for us! Although some tweaks are needed when first setup, such as ProjectIvy to replace AndroidTV bloat screen and Button Remapper to remap Netflix button on the remote to whatever else you want it to launch.

    Awe,
    @Awe@lemmy.ml avatar

    Fun fact for shield owners:

    If you block this domain with your dns ad blocker, the default launcher will only show ads for the YouTube, Google TV, and Google Play Store apps (not individual shows). I find these to be far less annoying as they use muted tones.

    androidtvwatsonfe-pa.googleapis.com

    If you have already setup your device and currently see ads, you need to reset the android tv home application data to get rid of them. This will temporarily show you the old dashboard, but the new one will load eventually (without ads).

    @LunchEnjoyer@lemmy.world avatar

    Nice one, although I personally find it better to use Project Ivy or any other custom launcher instead.

    For those who don’t know what the hell is Matrix:

    Matrix defines a set of open APIs for decentralised communication, suitable for securely publishing, persisting and subscribing to data over a global open federation of servers with no single point of control. Uses include Instant Messaging (IM), Voice over IP (VoIP) signalling, Internet of Things (IoT) communication, and bridging together existing communication silos - providing the basis of a new open real-time communication ecosystem.
