What are some good real privacy podcasts/channels?

I used to listen Michael Bezzel who is the owner of inteltechniques.com . Really nice and educational podcast but he is on a break atm. Check the website you will find bery useful information about privacy.

He gets some hate but Rob Braxman on YouTube/Odyssey was one of my gateway drugs into the privacy community. He is kind of obnoxious at times but lays out a lot of technical and basic advice pretty well I think. Learned about degoogled phones and Bluetooth risks from him as a couple of examples. I also second Luis Rossman on YouTube/Grayjay, he’s more on the philosophical and legal side of things.

I’ve been listening to Security Now for over 10 year now. Steve Gibson is highly intelligent and does an excellent job of explaining technical topics like how a new exploit actually works and how the mitigation functions, without making the listener feel like they need a PHD first.

Both Leo Laporte and Steve Gibson occasionally have opinions I don’t agree with, and they’ve had sponsors in the past that turned out later to have their own issues. But they’ve been quick to remove sponsors that are actively bad, and they’re honest about their relationships with their sponsors anyway.

It’s also refreshing to hear a more pragmatic (realistic) approach to balancing security with usability. Ie: your grandma doesn’t work for the NSA, so she doesn’t need a custom-built secure desktop with YubiKey running Qubes. She needs a password vault or notebook and you to occasionally update her machine.

Not all his videos are privacy focused but Louis Rossmann is a good right to repair and privacy advocate. Very entertaining to watch when he gets irritated haha.

Also, they would talk about custom roms for Android, then eventually when the channel got more viewers, the host makes a video advertising Google

Personally, I like Techlore, NBTV, Firewalls Don’t Stop Dragons, Luis Rossmann, The Hated One, The PC Security Channel, ThioJoe, and (sometimes) Linux oriented channels like The Linux Experiment do some good privacy/security stuff too.

Still subscribed to techlore, but have a lot of questions about their stands on privacy etc

Also, Luis Rossmann is a really really great guy, love his work, but he is a little bit boring to watch or listen to

Each to their own preferences. Some of these sources disagree with each other, and that’s a good thing. The worst place to belong, is within an echo chamber. Always think for yourself, and try to understand where others are coming from (why they came to the conclusions they did).

As for Louis… honestly, I prefer his tempo. It feels more genuine, less like he’s putting on a show for the camera. In the tech world, take Craft Computing, LTT, or Jays2Cents as examples. All have gone on record to admitting to putting on a show, changing how they talk, etc, while on camera. If Louis is putting on a show, I gotta admit, I’m impressed. Hats off to the guy.

I’ve only seen one strain of complaints about Techlore and it’s almost all created by, or tightly affiliated with, one Tom Spark, and created by crafting a narrative around weeks worth of live streams.

My problem with techlore is that they are ok with using google, apple, facebook

They pretty much promote proton, and kinda disencourage selfhosting

Seytonic on YT is great for privacy news, although uploads are infrequent.

That strikes off almost all of youtube TBH, maybe that is a good thing for you though?

They don’t hang out on other platforms like Odysee which is strange.

A lot of youtubers I follow have tried it and left because of the unmoderated comments. That should be a big pro point in an ideal world, but the kinds of people that gather in those sorts of places tend to be quite freeze peachy IMO, and there are barely any constructive comments most of the time.

Some other channels set it up to mirror their YT, and have pretty much abandoned it otherwise.

Platforms like Odysee will probably hit a critical mass of non-freezepeachy users when YouTube really messes up IMO, in the same way Lemmy existed for years and had its own culture, before the migration brought over a critical mass of users with a completely different culture.

Youtube will have to really mess up hard though, probably in a way that cuts off third party apps the same way Reddit did. If you ask anyone in my house to open YouTube… it’ll be piped, freetube, newpipe SB or grayjay, not the official site or app. My partner is a very heavy user of Freetube in particular because its so clean.
