QuazarOmega, (edited ) in Privacy respecting language learning tool?

It’s this: duolingo_collects_the_most_data_out_of_all_analyzed_language_learning_apps_2023

From this website: surfshark.com/…/data-hungry-language-apps

I believe the consensus is that it was deliberately misleading, but I should find the post that was made on here again

Edit: here’s the discussion lemmy.one/comment/3233478

That’s not to say that Duolingo is privacy respecting, of course, far from it. But it may not be as bad as it was made out to be

pound_heap,

OMG that’s the one! Thank you! I need to review the article and discussion though

Cyberjin,

Don’t use Hellotalk, Chinese Malware. www.ghacks.net/…/hellotalk-app-ht-coin-malware/

Depending on your privacy concerns, ChatGPT might be an option. Check YouTube for reviews and how to create a course outline

Rose,

ChatGPT is worse than Duolingo. The former will study and likely store how you talk, what you ask about and so forth. On Duolingo, unless you speak in the mic, you never have to reveal anything.

If you need just the id you can always screenshot that barcode or store it in an app like Catima. I dont have any advice for if you need other functionality, sorry.

EliasTheOG,

This might be my only choice…I still hope that I can use the app

apis, in Privacy respecting language learning tool?

How about a textbook with accompanying audio?

pound_heap,

Yeah, I see many suggestions to do just that. Might be a good time to go check a local library.

apis,

If you’re lucky, your library may have a language lab. They’d be far less common now that we all carry access to tutorials in our pockets, but those that existed are unlikely to have been ripped out.

Then, some countries run language learning institutes abroad with classes at all levels, group or individual, from basic conversation for fun through to examined courses in specialised language for people who are fluent or near fluent (medical French, engineering Spanish, business German, etc.). These would also have decent libraries if the idea of a course doesn’t appeal.

For online study, EDx hosts a lot of language courses run by leading universities. These are typically free unless you wish to sit a proctored exam to obtain certification of the level you attain.

Have you tried enabling the Exploit protection compatibility mode on the PF app setting info page?

EliasTheOG,

Yes

@vector_zero @Syakaizin
You could just live boot a linux USB and mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1 ;) 😂

vector_zero,

Lol, I’ve already got a fedora server and desktop, a debian home theater PC, and some sort of Linux running on an old laptop (I think it’s Ubuntu right now - I use whatever the current project needs). No windows in my household!

db2, in Windows 11 Debloat tools

I’m using something other than Windows. 🤷

platypus_plumba,

I wonder what it is

For future installs, just get a copy of windows (10/11, depends on what you prefer) LTSC.

Comes with zero bloat preinstalled, it’s refreshing

NNorAl,

LTSC by far the best way to use Windows, but W11 LTSC doesn’t exist yet, It’ll release next year source.

I’ll also suggest using a tool like Windows Privacy Dashboard to disable telemetry just in case.

governorkeagan,

Windows Privacy Dashboard looks very interesting, I’m going to have to give it a go. Thank you!

Resistentialism,

Does windows privacy dashboard interfer with like game anti cheat software? And other gaming related shit?

NNorAl,

AFAIK no, I have been playing a couple of games in Co-op with friends and have no problems related with Windows for now, my only mistake was not measure performance before enabling everything.

Resistentialism,

Brilliant. Thank you.

db2, in Browsers compared

How does Tor browser spy? Doesn’t that defeat the whole purpose?

LinkOpensChest_wav, in Browsers compared

The link that supposedly proves Mozilla has “ceased caring about technology” indicates nothing of the sort.

This whole article seems completely unhinged and untrustworthy.

Theres plenty of strong opinion in this dumpsterfire of a blogpost And very little in the way of facts.

finestnothing, in I just acquired a new PC

Throw Linux on it or reinstall windows if you don’t want to learn Linux. I assume it’s a new PC, but you never know what may be on there regardless. A new install with a complete overwrite is the way to go imo.

For Linux, it personally use arch (btw) and love it but it’s not super beginner friendly. I’ve heard good things about Linux mint for beginners so that may be a good place to start

j_roby,

Thanks, I saw somewhere else that Mint was recommended for beginners too. I’ll look into that

Diplomjodler,

Mint is a great option not just for beginners. If you just want stuff to work without tinkering too much, it’ll fit the bill for most users.

HumanPrimate,

Mint is great and feels very similar to Windows, and Pop OS is also very great and feels a bit more analogous to Mac OS if you prefer that.

Pop is in the middle of building their own desktop environment (moving away from Gnome) so the latest version is 22.04, but they’re still keeping kernel updates and packages up to date until the new DE is ready to launch.

When I first wanted to switch to Linux I tried out both on a USB stick and I was impressed with both, but I preferred the style of Pop. Both are based on Ubuntu so if you need to Google for tech support 99% of what you find will apply to you.
