This is nightmare fuel

mvirts, in Alzheimer’s can pass between humans in rare medical accidents, suggests study

We used to think that sickness was due to a god’s displeasure, not noticing what we now take for granted that disease spreads through contact.

essellburns, in Alzheimer’s can pass between humans in rare medical accidents, suggests study

Is “rare medical accidents” a euphemism for conception then?

Kolanaki, (edited )
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

While I concur that conception is a medical accident, it sure as hell ain’t rare. It’s actually pretty endemic.

NovaPrime, in Shipyard veterans may have been exposed to cancer-causing radioactive materials. The Navy has not told them.

The U.S. military and suppressing knowledge about cancer risks directly related to U.S. military practices: name a more iconic duo (see also vaccination experiments, burning fire pits, agent orange…etc)

Paragone, in Medical AI could be ‘dangerous’ for poorer nations, WHO warns

AI could be beneficial for poorer nations, somebody warns.

AI could be harmful for poorer nations, somebody warns.

BOTH are true statements, and it comes down, entirely, to implementation ( & regulation of implementation ).

Corruption rules this world, however, and expecting anything other-than corruption, of money-driven-medicine ( there’s a book named that, if someone wants to read up on such things ), is idiotic.

FLOSS medical diagnostic software may compete well, however, IF evidence-based-medicine is permitted to compete against authority-based-medicine.

( www.edge.org/response-detail/25433 is an article that got turned into a chapter of one of John Brockman’s books, on authority-based medicine.

That book is named “This Idea Must Die”, and some of the chapters in that book I agree with.

However, rather-than giving-up on evidence-based medicine, I’d rather dig-in & break authority-based medicine’s gaslighting, eventually breaking authority-based medicine, itself, leaving only evidence-based medicine. : )

OpenStars, in Arctic zombie viruses in Siberia could spark terrifying new pandemic, scientists warn
@OpenStars@startrek.website avatar

No more than the more common types of viruses and other steadily-evolving microbes though, plus humans have not changed genetically all that much from chimps even from 6+ million years ago, so most of this is clickbait hype.

We do need to maintain science funding around the world though - the next pandemic could strike at any time, without warning (as the last one showed us), and gee it sure would be good if we could be ready, with modern tools to meet whatever challenge comes our way.

Otherwise it is all too easy to fall for bait traps such as what happened with GISAID, which said the words that people wanted to hear but then were not skeptical enough to look at the source behind who was saying them. So now that’s a treasure trove of data lost to the public as a result.:-(

Asidonhopo, (edited ) in A little too old for HPV vaccine? Cervical cancer rising among women in their 30s and 40s

47 is the max age when you can get the vaccine from what I’ve heard.

can, in Medical AI could be ‘dangerous’ for poorer nations, WHO warns

It even raises the prospect of “model collapse”, a disinformation cycle in which LMMs trained on inaccurate or false information pollute public sources of information, such as the Internet.

Anyone else worrying a it that this will be inevitable for all models?

reddig33, in EU silver filling ban could lead to dental care crisis in Northern Ireland, says BDA

There are other filling materials. Composites work great. There shouldn’t be any “crisis”.

That phase-out was in the works for 15+ years. Pretty sure I’ve read somewhere that the UK has been stalling it for years, so they definitely knew it was coming.

Shame they lost their voice in the EU commission and have yet another consequence of their own actions to swallow.

They fucked up and left me with a month of bruising, so no.

That’s always a risk. I give blood about 6 times a year and that’s only happened to me once over the last 3 years.

Tantheiel, in Blood donations have fallen to catastrophic levels. Experts say young people need to step up.

First of all no.

Second of all fucking vampires

In reality I have a massive issue with needles that makes me super uncomfortable. Won’t go into details but I need a moment to recover when I get any work done around them . Legitimately less stress to not tell my partner something only for it to become a “surprise”
