If you're nuking your old reddit content, this might be important. For me, the reddit history visible on the website was far less comprehensive than the API could access.

As a 10+ year redditor, I would sometimes go back through my profile and delete stale or irrelevant content. Deciding to try a faster approach this week, I installed Redact (available at redact dot dev, or on the Google Play store). It lets you bulk delete, or preview things first, which I wanted to do in case there was anything worth preserving.

When scanning posts/comments, it first says it's sorting by new, then hot, then controversial.

The "new" results were the same as I could see on my profile, but then the "hot" and "controversial" scans found page after page of comments that I couldn't see on my u/ page. There were 50 results per page, and I didn't keep an accurate count, but I removed at least 1000 comments, mostly from 2013-2018, via the API.

No idea how many people this could help, so it seemed like a worthwhile first post on kbin.

(Also, hello!)

I used the old powerdeletesuite script to edit the comments, it worked for most of them.

Hi, can you help me with a math problem kbin? It's algebra, and it's been a long time since I've had to do it. Can you explain to me how simplifying the terms comes out to 9/2 in the pictured equation please?

nyarlathotep,

Hey, I can take a swing at this. It’s basically just a question of understanding how fractions work (which is fumbled horrendously by teachers, at least where I’m from - I basically had to teach myself fractions all over again when I went back to school).

So, if you look at the terms on the left hand side, we have “x”, which is the same as saying “1x”, so the whole number “1”, we have a whole number “3” as part of “3x”, and we have the fraction that’s going to cause us to do a little work, “1/2” as part of “1/2x”.

Now, a whole number can be rewritten as a fraction, and this makes the most sense when you see fractions as little division problems unto themselves. For instance, the “1/2” could be read as “1 divided by 2”, or “0.5”. A whole number like “1”, then, could be rewritten as “1/1”, or “2/2”, or “3/3”, and so on.

Now, in order to add fractions together (which is what we’re trying to do since our ultimate goal is to get the variable that we’re solving for alone on one side of the equation), we need the denominator to be the same for all of our terms, i.e. the “common denominator”. Because we already know the denominator we likely need, the “2” in “1/2”, we simply need to transform both of our whole numbers into fractions with 2 in the denominator.

For “1”, this can be rewritten as “2/2”. Dividing 2 by 2 gets us back to 1, so that works out.

For “3”, we need to determine what number divided by 2 gets us to 3. In this case, that’s 6, which leaves us with “6/2”.

The equation now looks like this: 2/2x + 6/2x + 1/2x = 45

We can, of course, pull the “x” out like this: x(2/2 + 6/2 + 1/2) = 45

Then, when adding fractions, we only add the numerators (the reason we were looking for the common denominator in the first place). So, 2 + 6 + 1 = 9, leaving us with “9/2x = 45”. It’s then just a question, as you can see in the posted solution, of multiplying both sides by the reciprocal to solve for x.

RyanIbanezMan,

@nyarlathotep thank you so much! There's other comments to read below, but this is the first one that has triggered my memory for common denominators. You've explained it brilliantly!

Edit: can you explain how the reciprocal works and comes out to 2/9? Been a long time since high school

A lot of people are boasting here like "well I just deleted my 15+ year account with quintillion karma."

I'm not going to delete my account yet (but probably won't be posting anything on Reddit either). Instead, I came up with a Strange Hobby.

Because password managers are so ubiquitous and easy to use and everyone should use one, I somehow found a complete list of all Reddit throwaway accounts I had over the years. (You know, from back when you could create accounts in seconds and Reddit didn't make you sign a blood pact or whatever.)

So I've been deleting those accounts. There was a pile of them.

And I like to every time I delete an account, a little siren goes off in Reddit HQ and Spez is like "Aaaaagggh! Not another one!"

Good idea! Also, it’s not always about boasting - putting things into words makes it easier for certain kinds of brain to process them. For some people, the act of leaving snoosite isn’t enough to fully internalise it, they need to say goodbye. Which is fine, btw. :)

Cybersecurity employee training that includes chatbots? I know, I know. I should ask this in technology or something but what im really looking for is more business related. Im looking for those duh, duh, kind of employee training but updated with the dangers of chatbots. Things like don't paste in private or confidential data, don't trust its answers are right, ask questions generally and move down to specifics, etc. etc. And yes I did ask a chatbot for the answer.

Cost of living is sky high; can we all share our best tips for saving money?

We started eating healthier, meal planning, and shopping places like Grocery Outlet before we hit the regular store for whatever we couldn't find. Our food bills for 2 adults went down considerably. If a trip would've been 50, it's now more like 35, and we eat a lot more veggies now, so win-win. We are also cancelling our subscriptions and checking movies and tv series out from the library to entertain ourselves, and walking/biking to work (realize not everyone can do this).

Any other good ways to put more into savings?

jd3,

FAST TV services (free, ad supported streaming), is taking over traditional pay services so there’s that. Hoopla/Kanopy are free with library card as well. OTA antennas (not the junk ones but Winegard, AntennasDirect, Mohu…).

Adding solar powered devices individually in lieu of a full upgrade.

You mentioned grocery outlet and meal planning already. Those two together is a MAJOR saver on the front and back ends. Kudos to you! Better foods also lead to better health and longevity along with lower medical bills. Being at the doctor less tends to lessen your exposure to medical malpractice and less nefarious but similarly detrimental to the patient… errors.

Enjoy nature! It’s free and beautiful!

Do simple tweaks… Hypermile driving style, turn thermostats up or down only a degree or two. Minimal changes to comfort but notable changes to utility bills.

Keep insurance paid up! Keep an honest insurance company too.

Use GasBuddy to find the best prices on gas.

Lock in utility rates ideally with companies with no early termination fee just in case prices drop significantly during the life of the original contract. These companies exist and we customers can use them against each other to effectively and indirectly “keep them honest” all the while keeping our utility rates at the low end of what’s possible.

Use apps like Ibotta and Fetch to get cash back on purchases that ARE made at the “normal” stores.

Enjoy what you already have… games, movies, books, family.

Perform or secure proper maintenance on the expensive items (yard equipment, vehicles, computers, etc).

Get off the treadmill most embrace and craft your own forward path. That’s basically what all these things do for us. And by all these things I mean my list, your list and all other legitimate tips humans have.

Great thread! Namaste

Is it possible to stop the screen from rotating on the Kbin app when my phone rotates? I have my phone settings so it shouldn't rotate from vertical to horizontal but for some reason only the app does it, anyone know if this can be turned off?

Weird, I'm pretty sure I have the latest version! I'll keep checking for updates though!

One option to reduce interaction with spez-ruled reddit is to use https://reddit.adminforge.de.

Eg: to access r/modcoord, use https://reddit.adminforge.de/r/ModCoord

A better RSS experience

I've been playing around with RSS views of the fediverse hoping to get something comparable to multireddits, but there is a problem.

First of all, it is possible to get reddit feeds on both kbin and lemmy. The URLs look like:

https://KBIN_INSTANCE/rss?magazine=MAGAZINE_NAME
https://LEMMY_INSTANCE/feeds/c/COMMUNITY_NAME?sort=new

Unfortunately, these are problematic when dealing with instances that are not your home instance. Any links to the post page will be absolute remote instance URLs, which means you cannot interact with the post (e.g. leave a comment). The URL really needs to be made relative to your home instance for that to work, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to fix that for a specific post. I can only fix the URL to the magazine/community itself and then hope to locate the post within it again.

If there is a way to get home instance-relative RSS feeds, I'm all ears! Failing that, I might work on a scraper that can take URLs of the form:

https://KBIN_INSTANCE/m/MAGAZINE_NAME@REMOTE_INSTANCE
https://LEMMY_INSTANCE/c/COMMUNITY_NAME@REMOTE_INSTANCE

and generate RSS feeds out of them? But I don't want to reinvent the wheel if something like this is already possible?

It might also be useful to someone trying to write an app with a multireddit-type feature? I will definitely release source if I come up with anything.

EDIT: fixed a typo in URLs

As a victim of domestic violence who has spent years online trying to help other victims, Reddit's act of undeleting several of my deleted comments just made me have to go through and manually delete. In the process, I had to relive a huge chunk of trauma.

I'm not feeling okay right now.

No, some of my restored comments had been removed years ago because they were too identifying to leave out there, once the purpose of support was accomplished.

I have a set of Bose QuietComfort earbuds I wear daily for workouts. I finally killed them and in the market for something new. I'm looking for higher end name-brand earbuds which would work for my exercising needs (bicycle rides, and gym workouts). ANC is necessary (but pretty common on all the top brands/TWS earbuds these days).

I was thinking about the Bose QC2 as it would be the logical upgrade, but I've heard mix reviews about them and I can't figure out if it was just a bad batch of earbuds or if it's a poorly designed product.

I guess the Sony XM4's would be a logical alternative but I don't know how comfortable they are for exercising

Edit - Android user, so apple airpods aren't an ideal option
