520,

There is no such thing as a 'stable' Wayland interface. Each compositor is responsible for their own interfaces, the Wayland protocol is there to make sure that applications written for Wayland play nicely with them.

520,

Bruh, it's a bit much to be buying a whole ass new handset for.

Side dock, top panel, lack of a “start” menu are already three immediately visible differences, and you claim it’s not that different?

The side dock is a taskbar except on the left hand side. Big whoop. Top panel is basically the system tray as seen on Windows, with all functionality fairly obvious just by looking at it, and there is infact a start button where you can type in the program name you're looking for, just like most people do in Windows. Not exactly MacOS levels of relearning.

Which is EXACTLY why I mentioned them, so that they can Google it.

Or...you can explain what you are talking about. Like I did for you. Sending newbies off on wild Google chases is not helpful.

Depends at what level you define 'console'.

Is it a device purpose built for playing games? Yes.

Does it have its own bespoke gaming platform? No. It plays games and applications made for the x86 PC platform.

I feel like the Steam Deck is the best proof of Gabe Newell's quote that "piracy is a service issue."

They could have easily crammed the Steam Deck full of stuff to make it hard to use for piracy - locking down everything, making it usable only to play games you legitimately own, force you to go through who knows what hoops in order to play games on it. That’s what Nintendo or Apple or most other companies do....

If you think that the goal of anti piracy measures is to be an impenetrable barrier, you've completely misunderstood the assignment.

The idea isn't to be literally impossible, but to be so hard to do that even the moderate tech heads won't bother.

The likes of Nintendo don't care if 12 people are pirating their games, what they want to prevent is situations line the PlayStation Portable, where almost everyone was cracking that fucker wide open and there was a shit ton of piracy.

520,

I'm still learning to code for the thing, so let's see how it goes!

520,

It really is. Shit, I don't fawn over tech purchases, but the remarkable is so damn useful.

Pretty easy to homebrew on too, no jailbreak required. I'm tempted to make a libgen app for it.

520,

Yes. A small number of them found Compound V and became super Jews, single handedly beating back the Nazis /s

520,

No.

  1. They have user interfaces designed for completely different use cases and input devices.
  2. Ubuntu doesn't really hide it's terminal.
  3. Ubuntu in no way has a locked down root. A simple sudo command is all you need. In a typical Android phone, is MUCH harder to get root on.

Android and Ubuntu are much more different than you realise. From the technical details to Google's monopolistic practices. Honestly it is shorter to list what they have in common (basically the Linux kernel and a tiny selection of GNU utilities)

520,

Any links to this? I'd be interested in seeing how it is done

520,

Bitcoin is anonymous insofar as you make sure the wallet itself can't be traced back to you. In other words it's all about how you operate it

Piracy is Preservation (feddit.de)

Image description: a screenshot from the Wikipedia page for the Doctor Who TV series, with a user-added caption that reads “Preserve the media you can before it’s gone forever.” The Wikipedia article reads, “No 1960s episodes exist on their original videotapes (all surviving prints being film transfers), though some were...

520,

Our mistakes as a culture absolutely need to be preserved in order to prevent history from repeating itself long after the people making said mistakes have passed on.

Not every part of preservation should be a celebration of the past. It is as vitally important that we learn the things we did wrong as well as right.

Just do what WB did and add a slide saying that these were products of their time and that we know better today.

Spooky season is when ghosts come out. The main enemy in pacman is ghosts

MUCH faster. Patents last 20 years. Software copyright lasts 70 years after the death of the author

520,

Only because those are the phones most consistently open to modification

520,

Like I just pointed out, 'something embarrassing' can have much dire consequences when put in the wrong hands.

It only has to go to someone with no chill and they will make the problems. The place they live in might be chill, but that doesn't mean there will be zero consequences.

520,

It only has to go to someone with no chill and they will make the problems.

What part of the above sentence don't you understand?

If their society (neighbours, employers, friends and family etc.) doesn’t care about nudity, what kind of dire consequences can you have in the wrong hands?

The problem there is that you are assuming that literally everyone in their lives is chill with this kind of thing. Maybe that is true if you spend your entire life in one particular bubble that happens to accept nudity, but that is true of basically no one. There is always at least one prude that would try to raise hell in the name of Christianity or some other such religion or other shit.

520,

Because a lot of tech culture is based upon the idea of sharing things with people, of enabling others, of bringing down barriers, of helping other people reach their potential. This is why open source communities are so prevalent, and even commercial tech offerings are sold to us with these ideals.

And all that is antithetical to many right wing policies, which are often about creating barriers and unneccessary limitations. Like DeSantis's Don't Say Gay laws. Or the defunding of community services like educational institutes. Or placing barriers on voting.

520,

I have a hard time deciding what to do with this.

On the one hand... Dude, even as someone who loves dark humour, I couldn't bring myself to make a cancer joke upon news of a diagnosis unless the person was a true shitstain on the earth, like Trump.

On the other hand...that was fucking brilliant and works on so many levels.

520, (edited )

The problem there is the same as that of idealised communism, you're relying on humans to do what they typically don't do. Humans will take for themselves at the cost of communities if they feel they can get away with it, including the ones in government.
