MonkCanatella,

I know the evangelists can be somewhat overwhelming, but its popularity is not unwarranted. It’s fairly easy to pick up, has an incredibly enthusiastic and welcoming community. People like it because it’s incredibly performant, and its memory safe. In terms of DX it’s really a joy to work with. It just has a LOT going for it, and the main drawback you’ll hear about (difficulty) is really overblown and most devs can pick it up in a matter of months.

MonkCanatella,

I just tried it out and it’s purely cosmetic - basically just puts your bookmarks bar to the left hand side, but it’s not like rambox or opera or floorp. It just opens a new tab

Google Cultural Institute is just plain awesome. SUPER high res photos that let you zoom in to your heart’s content. Right now in the front page you can color in hokusai’s great wave. You can explore lots of famous museums using google street view. It’s really incredible and totally free.

If you want to bulk save high res artwork of artists, not sure tbh. I’m certain there’s a way to download the high res images on GCI though

artsandculture.google.com/asset/…/rQEx7CtGiKE3yghere’s a good example. You can zoom way in and see the impasto brushstrokes and even the canvas behind it. What’s weird is that this version seems way darker than any other pictures you may find online. Not sure what’s up with that as it appears they took great care to make the photo

When a Torrent disappears from 1337x, how do you find out what happened?

Yesterday there was a controversial movie torrent that was getting 1000s of downloads and was on the “popular this week” page, and today it’s just gone. I went to the uploader’s account page and it’s not there either. Just like it never existed....

MonkCanatella,

Well that’d be fucking dope

MonkCanatella,

Heavily depends man. It’s awful when it flares up for me. Just randomly having my hearing drop out on one side and then eeee^eeeeeeeeee^

Where to turn to if I need books that are paywalled behind overly expensive academic portals?

I need some books paywalled behind Oxford Politics Trove and they aren’t on Anna’s lib, Zlib, Libgen, Memory of the World, Aaarg, or the Internet Archive. Not sure to whom else to turn to. I hate that knowledge like this is paywalled, and I highly doubt the authors will be paid if I pay the highway robbery of a price.

MonkCanatella,

Maybe you can buy it copy it and return it

MonkCanatella,

I think any official integration wouldn’t be smart. Working on interoperability and a plugin to link them that way would be far smarter. This guy likes decentralization but wants to combine two very different concepts and products lol. I get it though and I love that idea. The other thread also mentions open library which is a legal version of what op posted

MonkCanatella,

Nice link. Would probably be one of my first places I look for any classic literature. Though it seems fairly limited from just the few searches I did

MonkCanatella,

Kindles allow loading epubs nowadays btw. You can even add epubs from one of their websites. I like to sideload mine to get features that kindle epubs have that sideloaded ones don’t, like scrolling the text instead of having to flip pages

MonkCanatella,

Great resource. Thanks for sharing!

I made a community !pkms for all sorts of things related to PKMS aka personal knowledge management systems. I added some of my favorites resources there.

MonkCanatella,

Automation for books is kinda weird. It’s not like a TV Series where new episodes come out every week. I wanted to like readarr but I don’t see the utility. Anna’s Archive and IRC are your best options.

MonkCanatella,

Anyone have anything that works on Apple TV? I have some invidious app or other that basically never works, at all.

Louis Rossman/FUTO's YouTube app, GrayJay, now supports Sponsorblock... and shames you if you use it

Seriously this was very surprising. I’ve been experimenting with GrayJay since it was announced and I largely think it’s a pretty sweet app. I know there are concerns over how it isn’t “true open source” but it’s a hell of a lot more open than ReVanced. Plus, I like the general design and philosophy of the app....

MonkCanatella,

Eh, at least they added support for it. Good for them. Still looking at this app with some skepticism but so far seems to be doing what it sets out to do.

MonkCanatella,

Yeah but that’s true about any linux distro. if you can do it on one, you can most certainly do it on any others

MonkCanatella,

I’m confused, how can an application ship with wayland? What if the DE you’re using is on x11?

MonkCanatella,

cool, but I was asking as a question out of technical ignorance, not as a complaint about wayland.

MonkCanatella,

Nah, I literally didn’t have any idea. I’m all for wayland adoption. I’m on x11 because my main computer has an nvidia gpu but with wider adoption, I’m sure the fix will come soon.

MonkCanatella,

There’s major issues with copyright/licensings/trademarks etc. It’s fundamentally flawed

what the fuck is this?! WHat IS THIS?!

MonkCanatella,

he has some very dubious takes - he’s very correct on how shitty it is to be a consumer but he’s completely blind to any systemic analysis of it, willfully I would imagine.
