AA5B, to maliciouscompliance in [REPOST] Won't Let Me Go To Jury Duty? Enjoy Being Questioned In Court

I’ll forever be annoyed at myself for a reply that got me out of jury duty.

I do understand the importance of the concept and I am willing to serve. My only objection so far is how wasteful it can be. I got called up several years in a row …. To miss work and sit in a dingy basement all day until being excused as “not needed”. I even understand the point that the court has to be ready, but there’s got to be a way to make it less inconvenient to “stand by”.

So the one time my jury duty might have turned into doing something useful for society in return for my inconvenience , I get called to the bench and was asked a few questions. Unfortunately I got hit with anxiety and babbled something that I recognized afterwards as the exact opposite as intended, and was immediately excused.

Edit: fine, I’ll say it. The people who would use it to get out of jury duty probably wouldn’t take their responsibility seriously anyway. I attempted to say something like “I hold the police to a higher standard as a witness since that is their job”, and it came out as “yes, I always believe the police”. Wtf?

Thanks, looks interesting

AA5B, (edited ) to asklemmy in Anyone else do "last chance socks"?

Depends on whether the socks are paired up. If I grab a pair, I feel like I’m committed so this is their last chance (assuming I remember at the end of the day). If a sock was just thrown in the drawer and I still need to search for a pair, it goes immediately

AA5B, to lemmyshitpost in I'll just be over here setting a new record

Yeah, I’ll take this one. The funny thing is I saw this at the same time as a similar reply for an entirely different thread: I guess only knowing English is also an American stereotype, just like a certain date format

AA5B, (edited ) to asklemmy in Do streaming services sell your usage data to companies like insurance and medical

While I agree in sentiment, why would they buy info that’s not potentially useful?

– even in the US, I don’t think medical insurers or providers are allowed to discriminate by most self-destructive behaviors, like smoking, drinking …. I don’t know about mental illness but I certainly hope they can’t

— companies wanting to sell you medical products, such as for smoking cessation, probably do already advertise with demographics they link to smokers, do already buy that data, but are you counting these as medical providers?

AA5B, to mildlyinteresting in Pudding used to come in cans

Good to know, thanks. While I don’t know how my system does with this , the treatment facility is new-ish and was supposed to be state of the art.

But then we’re back to needing to know more about the sources of environmental microplastics, then figure out how to cut them

AA5B, (edited ) to mildlyinteresting in Pudding used to come in cans

Also, I haven’t seen enough research on where environmental plastic comes from. While they’re are some benefits to just using less plastics, less packaging where we can, it would be much better to focus on the larger sources

Realistically what I’ve seen for larger sources of microplastics is:

  • industrial waste
  • tire dust
  • clothing

I already have a lint trap on my washer outlet and see there are a few filters meant to trap much of the manmade fibers that come off in the wash, to dispose of in the trash rather than back into the environment with treated wastewater. I have no idea whether that would actually be helpful but the filters aren’t that expensive, and it’s one of the few options under my control.

Increased standards on industrial waste cleanup are always a good idea. However a lot of this may be in undeveloped countries

If laundry is a significant source of micro plastics in the environment, we need to figure that out and add filters or something

We really really need to figure out something with tire dust, since it will continue to get worse as more people can afford personal transportation. I did read one article about filtering runoff near roads making a big difference but it was light on details and I’ve only seen something like that once

At least with the lottery, my $2 buys a day or two of some fantastic daydreams. Can an anti vaxxer excitedly say “I WOULD GIVE EACH OF YOU A MILLION DOLLARS AND MAKE MY TOWN LIBRARY THE GREATEST IN THE STATE!!”

As does my fire stick, and even my Vizio smart TV … all except the Apple Arcade

I’ve bent thinking about moving in the other direction. I try to avoid privacy abuse of the SmartTV and Fire Stick is being enshittified, so what should I use? AppleTV seems interesting to try plus games may be fun

Take my hand, we’ll make it, I swear
