ALostInquirer, to asklemmy in What hobbies help you minimize or avoid navigating commercialism?

Learning card magic. You can go a long way with just a pack of cards and the 52Kards YouTube channel

I’ll have to give that a look! I’ve been trying to get better at some different card shuffles, as it’s both practical and fun to do.

ALostInquirer, (edited ) to asklemmy in What hobbies help you minimize or avoid navigating commercialism?

I see commercialism as exploitive, just purchasing things not so much.

Yeah, to elaborate a little, the question’s more aimed at finding activities that aren’t actively trying to rope you into buying more and more to keep up. A couple classic examples of what I had in mind to avoid would probably be like a trading card game or some tabletop game with collectible(?) miniatures (not sure what those games are called), whereas with crafting hobbies it’s simply a necessity upon exhausting craft materials.

ALostInquirer, to asklemmy in Forgive me, but…

It’s my hope to see unity and cohesion is the Lemmy-verse.

On a certain level, isn’t this against its basic idea? A variety of instances/sites connecting with each other seems more the point of federation than a unified/coherent whole.

The tripping point/growing pain for these various instances/sites at the moment seems to be there’s more similar, likeminded groups adopting the software to spin them up than there are distinct groups to create the variety that might reduce/mitigate redundant communities (in the Lemmy sense of that term).

ALostInquirer, to asklemmy in If another species on Earth began to develop civilization, how would you like to see them approached?

Suppose it was somehow possible though, beyond simply not intentionally/unintentionally fucking them up, what would you like to see?

ALostInquirer, to memes in Why do I need a leather fetish to edit photos?

Is this best done on a work computer in the office as the boss is roaming about?

ALostInquirer, to asklemmy in Those of you with lesser-known types of jobs...what do you do?

Some poor bastard had to go get that out of stock, bring it into repair, go over the entire lot, and take a special pencil to color in those little scratches, or mark it as unrepairable.

…This is so simple it’s making me ask to be sure…This specific repair gig was…Coloring in scratches?

ALostInquirer, to asklemmy in Which things have you avoided or embraced on the name alone?

Trying out new things in life is an effective way to learn something new about yourself and the world around you.

Part of why I’m asking tbh! I’m blanking on stuff I’ve avoided based on names, but I’m hoping some replies here might highlight them as, “Avoided but…!”

ALostInquirer, (edited ) to movies in [DISCUSSION] [SPOILERS] - Godzilla Minus One - Minami Hamabe, Sakura Ando, Ryunosuke Kamiki - Dir. by Takashi Yamazaki

Have you watched Shin Godzilla as well? If so, how’s it compare with that? That was the last Godzilla movie I saw and I really dug it.

ALostInquirer, to memes in Why? Are we not doing enough?

While I don’t entirely disagree, I’m a little confused by your description of the front page of lemm.ee, which we’re both on. My front page when viewing All here is mostly memes/shitposts/news/technology when set to Active sort, is yours not?

I’ve admittedly blocked a fair amount and have show NSFW/bot posts disabled, but the communities you mention aren’t affected by that.

ALostInquirer, to memes in Why? Are we not doing enough?

Do you visit here/Reddit for some news alongside other stuff, or more other stuff than news?

If the latter, you can somewhat avoid the rhetoric back & forth by blocking out a lot of the news communities, but then you do run into the general content problem more (especially if you’re also blocking memes).

ALostInquirer, to science_memes in I dunno, still might be aliens with this one.

[…] which could easily crush your rib cage as it can only withstand 630 pounds of force.

…How is this known? Also is that calculated with the skin/muscle/connective tissue buffer in mind? If so, that honestly raises even more questions…

ALostInquirer, to asklemmy in How would you approach buildings if they were more like synthetic organisms?

Not necessarily made of flesh, just alive in some strange way that’s apparent. Think something more along the lines of plantlife.

ALostInquirer, to piracy in Smart Tube Next, ReVanced, or something similar on Roku?

Which kind of Roku device are you using? Stick, box, or tv? Reason I ask is that there may be some workarounds for some devices over others, e.g. casting from phone or screen-sharing from PC.

ALostInquirer, to science_memes in Corvids...

🤨 Is this an elaborate joke, or is this query itself demonstrative of the reality of the statement?

ALostInquirer, (edited ) to memes in Whatever, I'll use it and abuse it.

I’m confused, and I suspect it’s from limited understanding here, but smartwatches are typically paired with a phone, so wouldn’t it make more sense to offload dataset handling like you’re describing to the smartphone than any onboard storage/memory in the watch?

Or is that part of the odd jank of some smartwatch systems atm that they don’t interoperate like that?
