ALostInquirer

@ALostInquirer@lemm.ee

I like to ask a variety of questions, sometimes silly, serious, and/or strange. Never asking in an attempt to pester or “just asking questions” stuff.

I’m generally curious and/or trying to get a sense of people’s views.

ALostInquirer,

As a bonus it will check to see if there are some glaring incompatibilities at the same time.

I’d heard of the site but for some reason I’d forgotten this part. I’ll definitely use it for that at a minimum (and maybe for sourcing parts as well depending!), as I have a habit of missing some tiny detail that happens to relate to compatibility.

ALostInquirer,

Similar to the other person that replied to ya, I’m in an older vehicle so I don’t have anything like that in mine, instead relying on either aux cable or bluetooth receiver to connect the phone to the audio system. It got to the point that I got a bluetooth media remote to get around the unreliability of voice commands.

ALostInquirer,

Which kind of Roku device are you using? Stick, box, or tv? Reason I ask is that there may be some workarounds for some devices over others, e.g. casting from phone or screen-sharing from PC.

ALostInquirer,

I’m aware of the trend, which is why I was asking about Great Britain in particular and whether they had also done so. Courtesy of this reply I was made aware that there are at least some there, albeit those highlighted were neither as old nor so large.

Still fun to know about though!

I was searching to find an answer and came across this discussion, so for others asking: how to block an instance? (or alternatively: how to block instances? additional search terms to help find this: blocking instance on Lemmy? Lemmy instance blocking?)

If you’re on the web version of your Lemmy site/instance, click your username>settings>blocks, and this next part may depend on your display resolution or amount of blocked users/communities, but in any event: scroll down/look to the bottom left and if your instance is on the latest version of Lemmy there should be a new box labeled Block instance.

Click the menu/button to the right of the Block instance text and a search dropdown will appear. Type in or copy/paste the name of the instance you want to block, and if your site/instance has connected to it, it should show up in the search results. Click the result and wait a moment till the message “[instance name] blocked” appears. Depending on what your site/instance’s running on, general traffic, or other technical things, the time for that message appearing may vary.

Regardless, if you don’t see an immediate response, don’t be thrown off, it’s just taking some time.

p.s. giving a mention to ya @RainfallSonata so you’ll see this reply too. Btw, like your name!

ALostInquirer,

what if you tried squatting some properties instead?

ALostInquirer,

I like to imagine a sort of awkward strangers reasoning for it, personally, where it’s not a matter of anything untoward involved, so much as nobody able to decide how to break the ice. Supposing that, I wonder what the cosmic icebreaker might be?

ALostInquirer, (edited )

Have you watched Shin Godzilla as well? If so, how’s it compare with that? That was the last Godzilla movie I saw and I really dug it.

ALostInquirer,

Nice, I’ll have to see if I can find a time to go see it!

ALostInquirer,

Thanks! Here’s to hoping it grows into a helpful space for folks! Remember to mention it to anyone else that might be interested!

What hobbies help you minimize or avoid navigating commercialism?

By commercialism, I’m aiming at a mix of spending a lot and sifting through bloated business models (e.g. this or that accessory/equipment, microtransactions, etc.). Feel like many can relate to this sort of commercial fatigue, and yet it creeps even into hobbies where one tries to unwind....

ALostInquirer,

Ooh, cool! Cards of varying sizes?

I’ve thought about getting into this 'cause my favorite part of old trading cards was more the art than the games they were associated with.

ALostInquirer,

Thanks! I’ll have to keep this in mind next time I’m getting supplies to try some of these out. I initially started with some standard Pentel pens and some blank index cards for practicing on when the thought struck me to try out making some small cards.

ALostInquirer,

🤨 Is this an elaborate joke, or is this query itself demonstrative of the reality of the statement?

ALostInquirer,

Thanks, the assumptions are about where I was aiming so this addresses the question pretty well I think.

An added question that this and other comments bring to mind though is, and this is admittedly a super basic question (which I’ve gone back & forth over asking in NoStupidQuestions tbh), but besides a cleaner and exclusive URL, why might someone go after a domain for a personal site, as in related to them individually?

ALostInquirer, (edited )

I’m confused, and I suspect it’s from limited understanding here, but smartwatches are typically paired with a phone, so wouldn’t it make more sense to offload dataset handling like you’re describing to the smartphone than any onboard storage/memory in the watch?

Or is that part of the odd jank of some smartwatch systems atm that they don’t interoperate like that?

ALostInquirer,

I definitely understand this sentiment being expressed across the comments here, however the aim of the question is to try to encourage one to imagine a little more, try to go at the idea with a little more idealism.

That’s why I framed it as, how would you like, rather than how do you think a new civilization would be approached. A slight difference, and although both require thought, the latter grounds the question more than the former, at least to my mind.

ALostInquirer,

While I don’t entirely disagree, I’m a little confused by your description of the front page of lemm.ee, which we’re both on. My front page when viewing All here is mostly memes/shitposts/news/technology when set to Active sort, is yours not?

I’ve admittedly blocked a fair amount and have show NSFW/bot posts disabled, but the communities you mention aren’t affected by that.

ALostInquirer,

Do you visit here/Reddit for some news alongside other stuff, or more other stuff than news?

If the latter, you can somewhat avoid the rhetoric back & forth by blocking out a lot of the news communities, but then you do run into the general content problem more (especially if you’re also blocking memes).

ALostInquirer, (edited )

Are you looking for a specific community?

A specific community. Sorry the question is…As it is, but it’s asking about a general help finding things community. Like for specific sites/tools/creators/products/etc. This is in contrast to this community, advice/personal help communities, and the AskLemmy communities which are about looking for communities, specific personal advice/help, or asking open-ended questions respectively.

Hope that helps clarify the question!

ALostInquirer,

Would specialized velcro for beards help?

ALostInquirer,

[…] which could easily crush your rib cage as it can only withstand 630 pounds of force.

…How is this known? Also is that calculated with the skin/muscle/connective tissue buffer in mind? If so, that honestly raises even more questions…

ALostInquirer,

How else are they going to get the full emotional range of your call?

ALostInquirer,

Not necessarily made of flesh, just alive in some strange way that’s apparent. Think something more along the lines of plantlife.

ALostInquirer,

Hmm, well if you have friendly forms of them I suppose you’d also have the odd pests and hostile forms, so that’s not a bad response. Speaking of, if you had lamp mimics you’d have a hell of frustrating time keeping your place lit.

Although I was thinking more in terms of domesticated, benign forms of living buildings/structures.

ALostInquirer,

Although, given some further thought, isn’t the double-slit experiment being discussed here sort of demonstrative of a “detection” without detection, i.e. the wave pattern vs. the particle pattern emerging after “detection/measurement/interaction”? Or am I misunderstanding it?

Is there another way they operate/appear outside of the wave-particle that eludes observation?
