AProfessional, 1 year ago (edited 1 year ago) to linux in Are there any downsides to using Homebrew as a package manager on Linux? I linked the source but sure, I’ll link it more for you. The portal code is here: github.com/refi64/zypak/…/flatpak_portal_proxy.h The actual code that Chromium calls is here: github.com/refi64/zypak/blob/…/spawn_latest.cc#L2… This calls the org.freedesktop.portal.Flatpak service. This service is here: github.com/flatpak/flatpak/tree/main/portal The Spawn method creates a new sandbox completely isolated from the originating sandbox.

AProfessional, 1 year ago to linux in Are there any downsides to using Homebrew as a package manager on Linux? The sandbox is not weakened meaningfully. It’s in a different namespace, no filesystem, no network, no GPU, seccomp rules still applied.

AProfessional, 1 year ago to linux in Are there any downsides to using Homebrew as a package manager on Linux? github.com/refi64/zypak It lets Chromium use flatpak sub-sandboxes and is basically identical to its normal sandbox in terms of permissions.

AProfessional, 1 year ago to linux in What has been your experience with Flatpak? The way to test what GTK actually gets is this command: gdbus call -e -d org.freedesktop.portal.Desktop -o /org/freedesktop/portal/desktop -m org.freedesktop.portal.Settings.Read org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme

AProfessional, 1 year ago to linux in What has been your experience with Flatpak? You must not have xdg-desktop-portal-gtk. I think one recent release was also bugged but it’s fixed if up to date.

AProfessional, 1 year ago to linux in What has been your experience with Flatpak? GTK_THEME is a development env var, it’s not expected to work in many cases. For example GtkSettings:gtk-theme won’t even contain it so apps can be confused. The post details exactly how it works but yes it’s only about GTK.

AProfessional, 1 year ago to linux in What has been your experience with Flatpak? from what I have seen, NO it does not. there is a flatpak command option to clean out unused runtimes. It does. The unused command is mostly for after updates, then what’s used may have changed.

AProfessional, 1 year ago to linux in Package format wars daydream It would change nothing, my comment there still applies: lemmy.world/comment/4941072 The format really isn’t interesting at all. It is the policies and choices for the software in them that matters and will never be agreed upon.

AProfessional, 1 year ago to privacyguides in AirVPN discloses server seized in 2015 Such a strange comment. Surely they kept it private because it’s bad for business. Then they randomly respond with this on a forum post?

AProfessional, 1 year ago to piracy in PSA To people watching YouTube with AdBlockers YouTube is insanely large in size and scope but… The key is just a platform that actually pays creators. Nebula is one I expect to succeed for its niche. Something like Floatplane with direct subscriptions is an option too.

AProfessional, 1 year ago to upliftingnews in Because of innovations in LED technology, the amount of electricity used for lighting is down drastically It’s an interesting idea, but it’s also solved by being added to many foods or 2 cents a day of supplements.
