AVincentInSpace,

The problem is the fact that the documentation exists solely as a series of what are effectively chat messages, not what platform those chat messages are hosted on. Markdown files or bust.

omg it’s a story about me!!!

also no shame if so, just want to confirm, but with short paragraphs, simple plot, odd word choice, and minor factual errors (“vi lacked the basic functionality that emacs provided”), this story reads suspiciously like ChatGPT wrote it. is that right?

AVincentInSpace,

So you’re saying she’s afraid of losing her famously numerous male followers? Or that her female followers (many of whom think she’s gay regardless of what she says in interviews) will start coming on to her because they now think they have a chance?

AVincentInSpace, (edited )

No way. No one is this far gone. No one is so out of touch that they start rejecting reality when it doesn’t conform to their headcanon.

Why would Taylor lie about her own sexuality?

AVincentInSpace,

Since it appears you missed my sarcasm, Taylor Swift has a statistically insignificant number of male followers, and the ones who would think they have a chance more than likely think she’s gay regardless.

You think that, in this day and age, with her political leanings, with the amount that she shouts about them, the woman who wrote and published the song Rainbow Dress would be afraid of coming out as gay to the point of lying when pressed to admit it because she is afraid homophobes will stop listening to her music?

I personally prefer native email clients to web (no browser overhead, no ads, no sweet-lord-Yahoo-why-is-that-feature-there, simple no-nonsense layout, plus several features web clients don’t have like viewing message headers (which often reveal some fairly interesting information about the various servers the email passed through on its way to your inbox) and, of course, the ability to read email while offline)

Okay. I’m not yet fully convinced of the existence of such people, but I can all but guarantee there aren’t any in this thread. There’s a big difference between that and saying you should stop arguing with someone who clearly isn’t interested in what you have to say.

Also, no one said trolls were lying about what they believed. Many trolls like to hide behind “I’m joking” as an excuse for believing things that are not acceptable to believe in modern society.

AVincentInSpace, (edited )

No one is so totally oblivious that they refuse to change their mind about whether or not minds can be changed in the face of scientific evidence to the contrary. For that matter most people do not completely discount evidence that disagrees with their viewpoint.

I strongly disagree with your claim that anyone who tells you not to talk to someone who refuses to change their mind in the face of ample evidence is probably a troll, and that even if they’re not, they’re not worth talking to, is part of the shadow government trying to drive the left and the right apart.

For that matter I really don’t know how anyone can seriously argue for political unity now that Trump is quoting Mussolini.

AVincentInSpace, (edited )

I agree that most people would not change their minds in the heat of an emotional argument. I also believe that despite this it is the duty of every citizen with a brain to change their minds when presented with new evidence. I also believe that no one could miss the irony in the original post unless they were doing so intentionally.

Anyway, you were talking about driving the left and the right apart.

“Some Americans believe this, therefore the Americans who don’t and are actually trying to fix this Godforsaken country, and get upset when people accuse them of believing it, are hypocrites and crybabies who can’t take criticism.”

AVincentInSpace, (edited )

Thank you for that. But I’m having a hard time believing that one comment from me reflects the feelings of “everyone”

Like I don’t know if you’ve seen the rest of this thread but…

AVincentInSpace,

“I have a Wikipedia article about people who do this. I therefore conclude that all Americans do this.”

AVincentInSpace,

If you were reading the comment I’m replying to and thinking to yourself “well, if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear”, let me ask you something.

When you go to the bathroom, do you close the door?

Do you think we should have security cameras in every public bathroom stall watching every man, woman, and child who does their business just to make sure nobody’s doing drugs in there? (Criminalization of addiction is an entirely separate issue, but you get the point.)

No? You’re worried about perverts watching the security tape?

Now you understand why we want online privacy.

AVincentInSpace,

I have been using android since 2013 and that was legitimately the last time I saw any such “weird permission request”

I hate Apple as much as the next guy, but I like the ecosystem

which is a fancy way of saying “I hate Apple as much as the next guy, but I still bought all their products”

a single anecdote that could have been coincidence proves nothing bud. i’ve been running Arch for years and recently my laptop has been having some issues. the trackpad only works intermittently, the speakers will randomly quit halfway through a video, and lately it’s randomly shutting down with no warning when running a game. does that mean linux is terrible and nobody shouls use it cause it fucked up my computer and is a pox on all humanity? of course not. all it means is this laptop is a lemon. all those issues happen in Windows too, the once in a blue moon I have to reboot to run a game Proton doesn’t support yet; i’ve called a repair guy in twice to replace the trackpad, and both times the issue has completely gone away for a few months before creeping back again; the speaker issue gets triggered when the laptop gets bumped, so it’s almost certainly a loose connection; and i’ve all but confirmed the random shutdowns are thermal.

also, fwiw, i recently had to try to recover data from a physically damaged microSD card. plugging it into my laptop under windows, nothing happened. plugging it (via USB mind you) into the exact same laptop under linux and trying to mount it caused mount to lock up, requiring a reboot before it would do anything else involving filesystems.

am i still a linux fanboy? yeah. linux is infinitely better than windows for the things i need to do, most of which involve programming. but that doesn’t and shouldn’t mean that i believe microshaft winblows is the worst piece of software ever created and that arch is the one true OS that everyone would be using if only they would see the light (looking at you, Gardiner Bryant).

linux diehards get outta here. you’re making the rest of us look bad.

AVincentInSpace,

But I didn’t tell you which side I-- ohhhhhh

AVincentInSpace,

“the culture” meaning…?

AVincentInSpace,

There are plenty of rebel flags whose literal stated purpose is not slavery. The red and black anarchy flag comes to mind. If anarchy is what they want to symbolize, why not fly one of those?

More to the point, we started this conversation because you said that repenting rather than digging his heels in was why the racer in the original post got canned. Do you think he was right to be canned? If so, are you saying that repenting is a bad thing?

AVincentInSpace,

What, to you, and to these people who fly it as an anarchy flag, was the civil war about?

AVincentInSpace,

Does failing to be racist constitute being a maverick?

AVincentInSpace,

oh, don’t mind me, i’m just over here using my graphics tablet that linux came with drivers for and which worked out of the box (including pressure sensing) as soon as i plugged it in, and printing on my printer which CUPS auto-detected and went from new laptop to printing in 30 seconds, and which i have never had any issues with
