I'm pretty fond of these little Velcro straps I got from Amazon that are like 10cm x 30cm, you use them to push all your computer cables into them so you can neaten them up. I've got several of them strapped back to back and it's a pretty decent solution (and being Velcro you can just pull it apart later on)

A fascinating read. Nothing of value was lost in not taking to these people for the last half decade

Yep keen on the layout overall

There's also several contributors who are actively working on improving the settings and adding in new features. I've been proposing a few changes for the mobile UI, letting you change up the mobile layout but all of that things take time (and add complexity) so it's slow moving

I like that there's both an update, downvote and boost feature. Recently the sorting / weighting mechanism was changed where boost = 2 upvotes so it's nice to upvote something + give it a boost so it sorts higher.

There's a lot of customization user wise also, I've been exceptionally busy working with the other contributors to make the mobile UI/UX a priority. There's been a heap of dev work going around so keen to see when that all gets into prod.

I've got a feeling that with another solid month or two of updates, tweaks and features that kbin will be really solid.

The REST API is still in development. Once that gets released I'm sure app devs will spring up and build something fancy. I think Artemis is already working on an integration but that's with html scraping.

There's been a heap of work on the mobile UI/UX and I'm constantly pushing to get more mobile centric features into prod.

That's fair. There's been a lot of PRs and issues focusing on mobile (like adding collapsible comments) but being a community project it all takes time to get it approved and pushed.

I'm keen on getting through as many mobile / UX centric improvements to mobile since that's primarily how I use kbin.

I finally got my changes out to the Android PWA and I'm super happy with how it's working now. Beforehand it had an ugly icon and no shortcut / action icons. Now it's fairly good looking.

There's a change coming to the "themes" section which I'm happy for. Love getting through these updates

Sweet. Can't wait to see how it all turns out! 🦙

Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...

Drastically reduced my usage and now spend that time on other side projects / reading. I miss the large volume of comment but don't miss being treated like an obstacle (like how reddit leadership sees their users)

About the same when you ask for a good GUI replacement for X and someone replies "just use the command line", like cheers for that men, not what I'm asking for.

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

The only thing I'll be giving Reddit is my traffic, more than happy to lurk the comment but I definitely won't be posting, commenting, upvoting/downloading or helping admins by reporting spam and rule violations. None of that effort anymore

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

I see what you did there

2023 certainly does feel like the year where you're getting less for more.

Found an issue or bug on kbin.social? Help report it. We're keeping track of issues and working on improvements daily (codeberg.org)

There's a heap of devs working on bug fixes and improvements to the kbin.social website. If you run into a bug or find something strange, it would be great if you can report it on codeberg....

The thumbnails have been fixed on the dev instance. I'm hoping that one comes out soon

I remember recently they changed some of their NSFW language rules, people had the shits and 6 weeks later they changed them again. This one guy who makes summaries of r/amitheasshole changed how he says it to 'am I the butt hole'

It's silly crap like that which is the most annoying, trying to censor the most mundane swear words.

Why is my phone screen's orientation failing to stay locked and how do I fix it?

I have a Samsung Galaxy A71 5G. This usually only happens a few times a week, but my phone seems to be very confused by kbin. I have to hold it vertically or it will switch to landscape orientation every single time. It's annoying. Any ideas?

Thank you all in advance!

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

@HotDogFingies on kbin specifically (if you're using the progressive web app PWA) it currently bypasses your phones landscape or portrait lock. Even on my phone with Android 13, if I've switched off auto rotation and rotate the site it still rotates

That's apparently a bug that's going to be fixed at some point.

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Having "add new post" in the header on kbin it's definitely something that will trip up people coming from Reddit. You need to add a new "article" which isn't very intuitive

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

In kbins case you actually have a responsive admin and can actually find devs on here working on new features and tweaks (hey there!)

Super happy with how kbin has been going so far

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Also the people who say "well I'm not using third party apps so who cares anyway"

The thing they should care about is how reddit has handled this situation. Imagine what nonsense they'll come up with next if they're willing to turf away some of the oldest and most dedicated users
