Auli,

Not really self hosted. Uses their online service to pull it into Home Assistant.

Auli,

Yep people should only purchase things that don’t require the cloud. Local control is the best.

Auli,

The thing is Linux continuously gets things added and sometimes dropped. And the coding they was done in X would never be allowed in the Linux kernel.

Auli,

This seems dated. I’m not saying there is no issues but man has it improved so much.

Auli,

There is t really a whole thing. Wayland is where Linux is going as the people who developed X11 say it is insecure and it’s to hard to fix the issues so they went and started Wayland. They should have called it X12 or something then there would probably be less complaining.

Auli,

Sure but as someone starting with a new system Wayland just works. Example multitouch works right away on Wayland and if I remember correctly needs configuration on x11.

Auli,

Sure but not everything can be defined in the Nix config. Firewalls have an issue, some options for packages are not implemented yet. For example systemd networkd doesn’t have all the features implemented.

Auli,

Huh, how the hell does turning off port forwarding improve privacy? I am so confused, security yes but privacy.

Steam Deck Switch emulation

Hey so I installed Yuzu (and many other emulators) via emu deck so the installation is taken care of I think except for the product keys and title keys I have a switch but dont want to fuck with getting the keys out of it and all that so Im trying to just download them I found a website called “theprodkeys.com” is this...

Auli,

How do you not have access to Reddit it’s a web page.

Is there a sponsor block situation for Podcasts?

I’m happy to adopt a new podcast app if it has sponsorblock natively or through a plug-in. Otherwise let me know if there’s some other way to make it work. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work as all of the segments tagged for skipping are crowdsourced which would also work for Podcasts.

Auli,

Would you pay for them? I mean these are usually just people making them not giant corporations. How do they make money.

Gentoo goes Binary (packages) (www.gentoo.org)

To speed up working with slow hardware and for overall convenience, we’re now also offering binary packages for download and direct installation! For most architectures, this is limited to the core system and weekly updates - not so for amd64 and arm64 however. There we’ve got a stunning >20 GByte of packages on our mirrors,...

Auli,

Not really I think optimizing it gives you small performance gains.

Auli,

They already do. Winnie the Pooh is public domain but not Disneys version the one everyone thinks of.

Auli, (edited )

Really where was it used?
Found it but no it was not. One line in one book from 1895 “The whole earth was overrun with ghosts, boggles … hobbits, hobgoblins."
So still think it’s very unlikely it was a word that anyone knew before the Hobbit.

Is Ubuntu deserving the hate? (lemmy.ml)

Long story short, I have a desktop with Fedora, lovely, fast, sleek and surprisingly reliable for a near rolling distro (it failed me only once back around Fedora 34 or something where it nuked Grub). Tried to install on a 2012 i7 MacBook Air… what a slog!!! Surprisingly Ubuntu runs very smooth on it. I have been bothering all...

Auli,

Like snaps. They are different then flatpaks. You can use them for cli apps don’t think flatpaks can be.

Auli,

Don’t think so. I mean it has X11 but I’m running Wayland can’t remember if it was installed by default though.

Auli,

Technically they have to give the code to people who use their product. And the general public is not it. Except I guess the free license one would be problematic. Unless their is something in the license for your use.

Auli,

Never touching Fedora again. It’s a corporate distribution. As much as people might say otherwise redhat has a lot of pull over it. Look at the lawyers getting involved over pulling out the codecs.

What are the differences between linux distributions?

Hey guys! Trying to understand what developers actually do to create a yet another distro, or what are the differences between existing distros. Lets say we have ubuntu and fedora. What are the differences? Excluding DE, Installer, theme, installed packages/libs and package manager. They both are FHS compliant, both running...

Auli,

Really nothing. Want to distribute hop without the hassle change your theme.

Auli,

Going to be they or XFS. There was a benchmark of the different filesystems I heard about never found it though. It was recent and included bcachefs

The Distro Wars are good actually.?

If all the seemingly pointless discussions about which distro is better comes from attachment to a spesific distro and if a distro is just a way to interract with linux than all the discussion about witch distro is better etc. fundementally comes from a a place of love and appreciation for Linux as an OS....

Auli,

Sure except every district has the same tools. I distribute is more of a toolbox then a tool.

Auli,

Nix is a pain. Not everything works. Example Netword supposed to be able to put options in some confines. Sure most work but I have two in my config that nix well not put in. Why they are valid an I’m running them on my current Os but my nix van refuses to build with them. Another nftsble rules. Again supposed to put them in config file. But I have some nix does not like, completely valid rules but nix won’t build with them. I’ll tinker with it but it still needs work.

Wanting to improve my Linux skills after 17 months of daily driving Linux

I’ve been daily driving Linux for 17 months now (currently on Linux Mint). I have got very comfortable with basic commands and many just works distros (such as Linux Mint, or Pop!_OS) with apt as the package manager. I’ve tried Debian as a distro to try to challenge myself, but have always ran into issues. On my PC, I could...

Auli,

Never noticed the speed difference besides the insanely long install times. But it was a long time ago I used it, but I did learn a lot.

Louis Rossman/FUTO's YouTube app, GrayJay, now supports Sponsorblock... and shames you if you use it

Seriously this was very surprising. I’ve been experimenting with GrayJay since it was announced and I largely think it’s a pretty sweet app. I know there are concerns over how it isn’t “true open source” but it’s a hell of a lot more open than ReVanced. Plus, I like the general design and philosophy of the app....

Auli,

No people think everything should be free.

Auli,

It is whoever uses it the most. If it gets overrun by alt right people it is an alt right service.

Auli,

Yep I do it cause I want to. Don’t care about the rest.
