It’s only suspicious if you take one or two snacks.

You need to completely empty the machine in a cart, bonus points if you empty several vending machines in a row.

I have an issue with how SIM cards are handled in most countries

Almost all countries require official authentication to activate a SIM card. This seems to me as a huge privacy problem, if the country can track sim cards across cell towers and connect them to a person. It seems like a dystopian system, that we litterely can not hide from our governments without turning off our smartphones. It...

BastingChemina,

I think there is above 50 cities named “Villeneuve” in France (literraly meaning "New City)

BastingChemina,

Me too, I would probably watch it with a group a friends.

BastingChemina,

I feel like the US has a very strong resistance to change regarding standards.

The 110v for example used to be the norme in France, but they changed it to 220v in the 50’ and then 230v in the 90’.

Same thing for the plugs, the paper size, the measurement system …

BastingChemina,

I don’t think the “No man can kill me” is some kind of magical immunity, more a brag.

BastingChemina,

It’s like the IT version of “did you check that the computer is properly plugged in ?”

Everyone roll their eyes having to check the plug but a lot of the time the issue can be something basic like that.

BastingChemina,

I’ve lost some of my sanity reading this !

BastingChemina,

Another issue that Darwin had is that for the theory of evolution to work you need very long periods of time.

The problem is that it has been proved by the physicist William Thomson using cold hard maths that the earth cannot be older that few hundreds millions years, which is not compatible with Darwin’s theory.

History told us that Darwin was right and Thomson wrong but it did not appeared this way at the time.

BastingChemina,

Internet can make people smarter, if they actually want to get smarter.

Have you ever seen a humain baby right after birth ?

Our brain is wired so we still find them kinda cute but without hormones and context we would probably find them ugly.

BastingChemina,

Yes, this particular ratio allows the fact that you can fold a A3 paper in two and get two A4 sheet

BastingChemina,

A friend in high school gave me an Ubuntu live CD and told me I should try it.

BastingChemina,

I will try it.

It’s more expensive than Fusion360 but if its working well I might be interested.

BastingChemina,

Just like wigs or esthetic surgery. We generally have the impression that wigs looks terrible, just because we only notice the bad one. The good one goes unnoticed.

Factorio for me, the interesting part is that I usually want tonlay the game after a day of mindless tasks at work.

On the other hand if I’ve been busy at work and had to solve a lot of issues I’m prefer other games.

It’s my brain gym

BastingChemina,

In a normal business that is not a mega corporation you would just do it. You can just activate it for a limited period if you really feel suspicious, after two or three tries you will quickly spot the people trying to abuse the system.

Even if people could abuse the system for free aubsceiptions, I don’t agree with the fact that preventing people from getting free subscription is a higher priority than helping a mother getting her 2 years old back.

Ask a physician physicist to build a bridge, it collapse but he knows exactly how and why it collapsed.

Ask an engineer to do it, it holds but he has no idea how it’s holding together.

BastingChemina,

I had a similar experience but in a big aerospace company (~1500 persons on the site where I was working).

The system to create and edit work instructions was only running on old UNIX workstations. It was in 2015.

BastingChemina,

Or it could an extension for the millions of chickens that the US government keep I’m the a secret location.

BastingChemina,

This is fundamental research, we never know what we are going to find.

BastingChemina,

For something more modern there is also the French mini series: youtu.be/VHCeqvQBNIM?si=RvjrgWHh2BNwFqT-

The world collapsed overnight and we are following few survivors. The second episode in the gas station gave me goosebumps.

The videos with the full episodes are available on youtube but region locked to France. I don’t know how to make it available for everyone.

BastingChemina,

There is a book that describes exactly that: Ashes, Ashes by Barjavel.

It’s a classic of French science-fiction literature and I recommended everyone to read.

It was written in 1943, it describes a parisian dystopian society in 2050 where all the electricity suddenly stop overnight. Even thought the book is 80 years old it is surprisingly accurate in some aspect.

BastingChemina, (edited )

You forgot water in your scenario.

To be fair most people in a first world country don’t need to think about water since it’s just “there”, all the time.

But as soon as the electricity goes out the water supply goes out too.

No water supply means no water to drink, with no water the human body die within 3 days, so people will start to rely on any dirty water they can find.

About dirty water, no water also means no WC. I repeat: no WC so no evacuation of feces and urine. Within a few day a big city swill be covered with human excrement. Mixed with no clean water access it means that deadly waterborne diseases will spread extremely quickly.
