BearOfaTime, to piracy in Warner Bros. Wants Tumblr to Identify Beetlejuice 2 ‘Leaker’

Seems a single image would be good for gaining attention. Turning it into a “leak” makes a story.

I’m not sure what to believe anymore , lol.

BearOfaTime, to privacy in Brave to end 'Strict' fingerprinting protection as it breaks websites

So?

What I care about in this story is the technical issues.

BearOfaTime, to privacy in Feeling like Privacy is a lost war.

Your address is public information. Trying to hide that is pointless (well, it can be done, but is complex to do).

BearOfaTime, to piracy in If purchasing isn’t owning, then piracy isn’t stealing

No, free market isn’t “supposed” to self regulate. That’s silliness. The only people who say that have no understanding of the concepts.

Regulation is required. Unfortunately with regulatory capture it’s not happening.

BearOfaTime, to privacy in How to get a private car

Unlikely to find a new car without a calling home function.

Definitely not one with car play.

Best you can do is find the cell antenna port and put an RF sink on it (they’re used for testing radio output).

BearOfaTime, to piracy in Amazon and Tolkein Estate force author to destroy all copies of his work. Only pirated copies will survive.

What was this guy thinking? He was clearly violating copyright.

Is he just soft in the head, or is he up to something us not crazy people can’t see?

BearOfaTime, to privacy in what are your recommendations for a good privacy friendly sms app?

There’s no privacy with SMS. It’s sent in the clear. There’s no changing this with an app.

BearOfaTime, to privacy in YouTube adds tracking parameters to shared URLs that can be traced back to individual Google accounts

Adds?

I thought they always had them?

BearOfaTime, to piracy in Amazon and Tolkein Estate force author to destroy all copies of his work. Only pirated copies will survive.

I don’t even like Tolkien (find his writing to be just excessive, I don’t need to know the color of the buttons on the shirt of the dead character with no name), and even I have to agree, lol.

Too many re-interpretations of authors’ works. Tolkien is highly detailed - not reflecting that (or worse, substituting your own details) in a movie or show is just hubris. If you’re so damn good why don’t you write your own shit. Oh, your name doesn’t sell instantly is why.

BearOfaTime, to privacy in Police across Britain equipped with live facial recognition bodycams

Sure they haven’t. 🤦‍♂️

I commend your optimism/open mind, I’ve just seen the abuse by anyone in a position of authority too many times.

And I mean any authority, middle management at companies, etc. Many people struggle to resist using whatever power they have (myself included).

BearOfaTime, to selfhosted in So SBCs are shit now? Anything I can do with my collection of Pis and old routers?

2 - 8 watts of power for a Pi vs 9-150watts for an x86 system. There are definitely use-cases.

I use a Pi for DHCP, DNS with PiHole, Tailscale Subnet Router, Rustdesk server, Vaultwarden, Syncthing (connects to local device shares, rather than run ST on each device), ArchiveBox, and working on instant messaging (maybe SimpleX, not sure yet). It’s kind of maxed out.

But all this runs under 8watts (actually it’s so low my smart switch doesn’t even register the consumption).

BearOfaTime, to privacy in The AirDrop flaw exploited by China, explained

Like they sat on (and still haven’t resolved) the iMessage issues they’ve known about for years.

BearOfaTime, to privacy in The Irish government wants to pass a law that could see you or your loved ones jailed for possession of memes, cartoons or any content that could be deemed "hateful".

I declare the use of the word “punish” to be hate speech.

Sorry, the moment you say you agree with this idea, you’re starting down a road that goes nowhere good.

Call me names. Call my family names. Use any language you want. I don’t care.

The line is when you’re calling for a crime to be committed.

“Hate speech” is a convenient tool to target whoever is in power wants to at the moment.

BearOfaTime, to privacy in US govt pays AT&T to let cops search Americans' phone records – 'usually' without a warrant

Well that’s at least one step removed from what they were doing in the 90’s, when Verizon(?) dta centers had direct connections for feds to snoop.

I don’t remember the details, just that it was a big deal at the time. And I’m just sure they stopped doing it, right?

BearOfaTime, to privacyguides in It seems Gen Z is just fine with parents knowing where they are all the time

Please tell me you’re educating your family in privacy issues. This tracking circumstance is an excellent opportunity to approach it with a education mindset instead of the stereotypical kids/parents conflict.

Check out www.theprivacydad.com it’s a great starting point for parents who don’t know tech enough to realize what’s going on.
