You can make them into stickers and put them into messages, can even have them moving. That stuff was an advertised feature though.

On iOS you can also move up and down between lines and select text with the spacebar (hold space, tap on keyboard somewhere else with another finger, drag space to select).

Author choosing some odd phrasing to group murder and interactions on the LKML.

Edit: The letter does include “social mistake in the Linux community” but it’s still odd to phrase it that way in an article about it, imo.

Yes, which is why it is a little odd for the article author to include it without context, because we all immediately think of one social mistake that has nothing to do with Linux.

How much does a creator's worldview influence whether you use their tech or consume their media?

Watching the drama around kagi unfold and it has me wondering how much you take into consideration a creator’s view on things like homophobia, sexism, racism, etc. when deciding to use a product. I think most of us have a bar somewhere (I would imagine very few on this website would ever consider registering on an altright...

I hate the history thing. People still go after Brendan Eich for donating $1000 to the Yes on Prop 8 campaign in 2008. Prop 8 passed with 52.24% of the vote, over 7-million California voters probably including many that people still like (thanks secret ballot). It was thrown out by courts, nothing to do with people being moral.

That’s not to say he’s a good guy I agree with, he’s said and done other things much more recently that I don’t agree with, like his stance on COVID, but Prop 8 is always the number one thing people mention.

Edit: even later on in this thread. People should boycott anything made in California if that one donation is such a painful thing.

Strongly, generally, although I also try to see who they are today versus who they might have been. It also depends on what they are saying and less on what somebody tells me they believe. For example, if someone doesn’t understand or is uncomfortable with a trans person but at the same time believes everybody should have the rights and ability to live life as they choose (basic tolerance, essentially), I don’t consider that transphobic specifically. Some people would though.

I avoid altogether, look for alternatives, or do my best not to support them financially at least. So I avoid anything written by Lunduke, I don’t avoid all of JKR because I like the franchise, but I get anything secondhand.

Interestingly, UK foods destined for import in the US market use the US label and do include that information. Heinz Beans have 50mb calcium, 1.5mg Iron, and 370mg potassium per 130g serving, for example.

Mark Ewing used to wear a red Cornell lacrosse cap and when he would help in computer labs people would look for a the man in the red hat. The company was called Red Hat after Mark but their logo has been a person in a fedora for a long time.

Fedora is a community continuation of Red Hat Linux, which was discontinued in favor of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Back when I was starting out Fedora wasn’t a thing, you downloaded Red Hat Linux for free directly from the company or could buy it in a box.

It is up to the home instance of the user, and problematic nodes are defederated.

Instances can choose to operate either blacklist or whitelist mode. Most are on blacklist mode, where new instances federate automatically.

Someone would fork something and continue on the old path (probably with a lot of the old user and devs).

Posts like this always ignore that people do things because they’re interested in it.

They are going downhill and less user serviceable these days. Talking T series, the old workhorse. Older ones are still good.

Yes, SUSE Linux Enterprise Point of Service often ends up being a source of “Linux in the wild” posts.

    Simplenote, Notesnook, Obsidian.

Obsidian sync isn’t free, and it’s easy to violate their license if you mix work and personal notes.

I think Joplin tends to be better than most. If Obsidian was licensed and charged differently I might change my mind.

My coping mechanism is hyper-planning. I don’t live in or enjoy the present much, but have never been late on a payment.

Most recent Stable release was December 13, fixing a CVE. Someone is working on it (Red Hat still pays a few to do so, at the very least).

I think it would usually be taken that whatever you’re talking about is probably not good or you are being forced to say it is good. So in that sense it could be rude.

“Very few” apparently doesn’t include all the high school English students that read it every year.

    Bitrot,
    @Bitrot@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It doesn’t. Even if you defederate with an instance, you can still comment and vote on posts from that instance that predate the defederation and people on your instance will see them, it just won’t go to the original one.

Everything you do on your own instance is against a cached version of the original post that is saved on your instance. Your instance sends updates in the background, the other instance can be entirely down and you can still browse, comment, and vote as normal on your own. The updates will just stay local though.

It’s hard to move the winter solstice and days getting longer again is something worth celebrating, but maybe more emphasis on Midsummer.

Depends on tolerances, I’d probably see if a Chipolo or some other tracker would fit. Android ones are coming very soon.

Entire album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess by Chappell Roan. I don’t like every song, but most. It’s a lot of fun.

Also the song Grown Up by Raffaella makes me laugh.

What's a proper response to another dog attempting to mount your dog multiple times and the owner really not doing anything about it?

The owner kind of makes a weak attempt to seem like they’re trying, but if I weren’t there, they wouldn’t intervene at all. I’m asking because I want to make sure that I don’t over react next time.

Ending support for Windows 10 could send 240 million computers to the landfill. Why not install Linux on them? (gadgettendency.com)

With support ending for Windows 10, the most popular desktop operating system in the world currently, possibly 240 million pcs may be sent to the landfill. This is mostly due to Windows 11’s exorbitant requirements. This will most likely result in many pcs being immediately outdated, and prone to viruses. GNU/Linux may be...
